A body recovered from a waterway has been identified as that of an architect missing for more than a fortnight, police said yesterday.

David Hopps, 55, disappeared from his home in Leith, Edinburgh, on May 31. He had been due to move to the US with his partner but the relationship ended recently. Lothian and Borders Police recovered a body from Edinburgh's Water of Leith, near Rennies Isle, on Thursday afternoon.

The body was found trapped in a boom for collecting litter by a member of the public. Yesterday it was identified as Mr Hopps.

A police spokesman said: "Tragically we can confirm that the body recovered from the Water of Leith yesterday is that of missing architect David Hopps."

The Strathlyde University-educated architect had created a page on the website Friends Reunited on the day of his disappearance.

There he told former school friends: "For 20 years, I lived and worked in London, and now I live and work in Edinburgh as an architect."

His death is not being treated as suspicious.
