Murray seeded sixth for US Open

Andy Murray has been seeded sixth for the US Open while Spain's Rafael Nadal will be the top seed in a grand slam event for the first time in his career, writes Hailey Milne.

Newly-crowned world No.1 Nadal will be followed by Roger Federer, who has been top seed at the last 18 majors, Novak Djokovic, David Ferrer, Nikolay Davydenko and Murray.

Andy Roddick, champion in 2003, is the highest-seeded American at No.8, one place ahead of compatriot James Blake.

There were no major surprises in the women's seedings, where top-ranked Ana Ivanovic is the No.1, followed by Jelena Jankovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Serena Williams and Elena Dementieva. French Open runner-up Dinara Safina is No.6 with Wimbledon champion seventh seed.

Maria Sharapova, the 2006 champion and current world No.6, is missing the event to recover from a shoulder injury.

The singles draws for the US Open will be announced tomorrow.
