Mark McMillan, the Scotland A scrum-half who won a Heineken Cup winners medal with Wasps last season, is set to return to Glasgow Warriors at the end of this season.
The 24-year-old joined the London side after a spell with their English Premiership rivals Leeds, but remains very much under-study there to Eoin Reddan, the Ireland international. While he has revelled in the environment there and developed hugely as a player he knows he must establish himself as a first team regular if he is to challenge Mike Blair, the current Scotland captain, Rory Lawson, who captained the A team this season and Chris Cusiter, the British & Irish Lion, for a place in the national squad.
A feisty competitor, McMillan will relish that challenge, having impressed the national coaches when on A international duty at last summer's Churchill Cup, joining the squad after helping Wasps to that Heineken Cup win over Leicester, and again last month.
Sean Lineen, the Warriors head coach who also worked with Scotland A this season, was not prepared to confirm that the player would be returning to the club where they worked together when Lineen was backs coach and McMillan an apprentice before his move to Leeds. However he admitted that it is a key area that his club needs to strengthen, with Sam Pinder, who was capped on Scotland's tour of South Africa two years ago, the only experienced scrum-half on their books.
"With Chris O'Young going back to Western Force we are a scrum-half down and obviously our preference, as always, is to try to bring in Scottish players where possible," said Lineen.
He added that he is currently working hard on recruitment and hopes to have next season's squad finalised by the end of April.
