Six British records broken in Manchester

Liz Byrnes

Kris Gilchrist claimed Britain's third gold medal of the World Short-Course Championships when he edged the 200m breaststroke in Manchester. Mark Foster, Lizzie Simmonds and Fran Halsall all took silver while Robbie Renwick and Jo Jackson won bronze.

Gilchrist, of City of Edinburgh, battled it out with Ukrainian Igor Borysik, and the pair were neck and neck coming down the final length but the Scot touched out his opponent - winner of the 100m event - in 2min 06.18sec.

Duje Draganja set a new world record of 20.81sec to beat Foster into second place in the 50m freestyle.

Simmonds, the 2007 four-time European junior champion, beat the old world record in the 200m backstroke by more than a second but was still runner-up as Kirsty Coventry claimed her third gold medal and second world record of the meet.

Halsall, 18 today, claimed her first senior individual medal in the 100m freestyle behind Marleen Veldhuis, the Dutch 50m long-course world record holder. Halsall finished in 52.79, another British mark, Renwick reduced the British record he set earlier yesterday by more than two seconds to claim third in the 400m freestyle behind defending champion Yuri Prilukov and former Olympic silver medallist Massimiliano Rosolino. The 19-year-old touched in 3:40.22 with City of Aberdeen team-mate David Carry one back in fourth.

Jackson claimed bronze in the women's equivalent, lowering her own British record while Tancock claimed his second medal of the meet when he finished second behind Ryan Lochte, who set a new world record, in the 200m individual medley.
