British fanaticism taken much too far

The Beeb's frenzied search for a "Brit" (read English) winner at the tennis saw a 14-year-old lassie's match leading the BBC sports news on Saturday morning in spite of it being women's final day.

Then we had the breathless news of the other Murray brother having a chance in the Wimbledon equivalent of the egg and spoon, the mixed doubles. What next, an award for the British player with the best kept public convenience at the All England Club?

Bob Storrar, Livingston

Time MacPherson was sent to pasture
It was with some relief that I read the letter from Tom Daly (Fans with Laptops, July 4) as I was concerned that I was in a minority of one in watching football matches with the sound off if Archie MacPherson was the commentator.

When will his employers wake up to his lack of an ability to give the viewers any real insight into the match taking place? Please send him out to pasture where he can be as eloquent and uninformative as he likes.

Roy Clark, Stirling

I agree with your previous correspondents regarding Archie MacPherson and Scott Booth, though the latter is a marginal improvement on the dreadful Mark Hateley.

The best co-commentator in my view is Andy Gray, who actually manages to enhance the viewer's enjoyment and knowledge, and avoids the common mistake of simply repeating the bleeding obvious over replays.

In the new season I also hope that Setanta will learn from Sky, and stop rushing into replays of incidents while the ball is still in play.

It is very frustrating for viewers to be watching replays while hearing the crowd roaring in the background about something happening live.

Andy Ewan, Dunoon Rangers fourth best? You must be joking It was with some incredulity that I read that German statisticians had come to the conclusion Rangers were the fourth best team in the world.

The Ibrox club haven't even won their own championship in the past three years, while the team that has won it is 46 places below them in these stats. For once, Basil Fawlty was wrong, the Germans do have a sense of humour.
