Clouds to every silver lining

SO, it looks likely that European Championships as of Euro 2016 will feature either 20 or 24 sides, as opposed to the current 16 after all the European national football associations came out in favour of the expansion at the weekend.

They say that there will be no dilution of quality, but this seems highly illogical. The idea came initially from Gordon Smith and the SFA, and, I suppose, we shouldn't be complaining: more teams qualifying will mean, of course, that Scotland have a better chance of getting there.

However, let's not pretend that the associations, and above all UEFA, are not motivated first and foremost by self-interest. More teams equals more games, equals more money, but look what happened when the Champions League involved two group stages and thus significantly more matches: the football became turgid and boring.

Another reason to have reservations is that it would be harder for the likes of Scotland to convince the continent that we would be capable of hosting it.

Andy Murray and the break-up of Britain AS Martin Greig noted (Wimbledon Diary, June 28) there is strong interest in Andy Murray's progress at Wimbledon. Greig went back to 2006 to note some English people will not forgive Murray's comment that he would support "anyone but England" during that summer's World Cup. An honest sentiment shared by thousands.

One BBC commentator, John McEnroe, opined "all England" would be supporting Murray. For all of the nationalities represented at Wimbledon, let us hope that the high standards of tennis will be matched by the commentating.

Superficial tennis fan in dismay IT will be interesting to see the viewing figures for the women's matches at Wimbledon this week now that both Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic have been knocked out of the tournament in the early stages.

It is unthinkable that so many ordinarily tune in because of the high standard of play.
