Thistle glories a mere memory now

I enjoyed yesterday's letter about Partick Thistle (Fans with , June 12).

Is there anyone left who still remembers the great days and great players at Firhill? Tommy Legerwood, Hugh Brown, Jackie Husband, Jimmy Davidson, Johnnie McKenzie, Jimmy Walker, Alan Rough - and even Alan Hansen?

Who remembers Thistle beating Aberdeen 4-0 to take over at the top of the first division? Or drawing 4-4 against Hearts after being 4-0 down at half-time?

Or the quickest goal ever in Scottish football - Willie Sharp's seven-second strike in a 7-1 thrashing of Queen of the South? Or scoring two goals in the last minute to draw against Clyde?

Or that 28,000 once turned up for a home match against Albion Rovers?

There were so many such great Partick Thistle moments in those far off days. Will we ever see their like again at Firhill? Sadly, I doubt it.

Ally McLeod has been vilified' for too long. Despite his pre-World Cup rhetoric the only people who thought we would win were those who paid 50p to wave at a bus going round Hampden before the team set off.

Sure, the preparation wasn't right, the team that got us there were perhaps past their best, but his enthusiasm lifted the whole of Scotland. Contrast that with the boring efforts and performances of subsequent managers trying to preserve their own records as manager and I still believe that Ally should have been knighted (before we went).

This from someone who had a party in his hoose for 85 people for the first game.

Ian Ramsden, by email No surprises about England focus We knew that it would happen sooner or later. After watching a feast of football of the Netherlands v Italy and the highlights of France v Romania on Monday night, did we get an overview of how the tournament was progressing? No, we got an interview with Fabio Capello, the England manager. Relevance?
