Consequences of leaving out a natural goalscorer

So Walter Smith thinks Kris Boyd doesn't contribute much to the Rangers team then? Well apart from (vital) goals, obviously.

Perhaps he might want to tell us what Lee McCulloch has contributed all season.

I'll tell you - virtually nothing. But as Walter (foolishly) paid over £2m for him, I guess he had to select him.

Walter also told us that he needed to use all his squad during the run in. Well if he had selected Boyd from the start in the vital games against Hibernian and Motherwell and selected someone to play up front with him, the league title would've been won.

Walter Smith says "Boyd can score goals, but I have other considerations to think about".

I thought the purpose of football was to win by scoring goals, and that is what Kris Boyd was bought to do. Rangers drew five games last season and lost six, most of them by the odd goal.

How many of these 28 lost points might have been won if Boyd had been playing regularly instead of sitting on the bench?

How can Boyd be expected to improve his all round game if he is left sitting on the bench game after game?

Years ago, Graeme Souness left Ally McCoist out of the team for a whole season, and Smith has now made exactly the same mistake. I wonder if McCoist agreed with Walter Smith's selection policy?

Natural goalscorers are a very rare breed. Managers should treasure them and leave them to get on with it, not try to turn them into something else.

Criticism of Strachan remains valid
Neil J McDermott (Fans With Laptops, May 27) shouldn't beat himself up too much about criticising Gordon Strachan.

The fact that Rangers had so many big games to play in so few weeks doesn't suddenly make Celtic a great team.

I suspect Neil was simply premature and, once a normal level playing field returns next season in terms of fixtures to be played, all the old flaws will reappear.
