Fixture congestion: the debate rumbles on
Everyone knows the name of the dark force behind Rangers fixture problems. It is not Gretna, whose postponed game has long since been played.

Tom O'Neill's petty attempt (Fans with Laptops, May 6) to exculpate the guilty party merely emphasises the unfairness involved.

Rangers can, of course, avoid any repetition by following the example of the big four in England and playing Under-19 teams in League Cup and Scottish Cup next season.

The squeals will be heard in St Petersburg, and other points east.

J Stevenson, via email

Tom O'Neill mentions that Aberdeen had a request to have a match postponed turned down, but what he fails to say is that the SPL only did so after consulting Aberdeen's opponents, Motherwell.

As for Gretna, against whom Rangers had a game postponed, allegedly being "the poorest side ever to set foot in the SPL", Mr O'Neill should recall that they gave Celtic serious trouble at that stage in the season.

It will be a great pity if the SPL cannot see the way to giving Rangers a free week before the UEFA Cup final, as a first European trophy win in 25 years would be a huge boost for the game in this country.

James Hart, Glasgow

In presenting fallacious arguments, Tom O'Neill, rather than shifting blame, demonstrates the emptiness of the sporting integrity comments of Peter Lawwell.

Mr O'Neill misses the point. Instead of asking why people are not falling over themselves to help Rangers, the real question is why Dundee were so keen to help Celtic, and why so many, including officials, appear to be falling over themselves to help Celtic this time.

James Lay, Lennoxtown

Let's get one thing clear.

I am a Celtic fan and I am extremely jealous of Rangers being in the UEFA Cup final.

Now let's get another thing clear. I would be embarrassed at all the quotes along the way from opposing managers if I was in Rangers' shoes on how they got to the final of the 2008 UEFA Cup.

I would rather be knocked out than for my team to be known throughout Europe for their ultra-defensive style - a new formation of 1-10.
