The debate has started again. It is the same one we have every four years: "What would the Lions tour team be if the game was next week?"
This question always is very subjective as people have their favourites but there usually is a core of players that everyone would have in their team. Not this year.
Before the Scotland v New Zealand game, I had this debate with Keith Wood and we only had four players that were in both our sides. This highlights how open selection is in many positions and how vital the Six Nations will be. What the last four weeks of international rugby have proved is that reputations can be ruined in only a couple of games. Likewise, players can suddenly throw themselves into the mix with a couple of stand-out performances.
Before the Autumn Tests, there was a good argument to have the golden boy of English rugby in the Lions test team. Danny Cipriani went into the internationals possibly in the box seat for the No.10 shirt, but three poor performances have cast major doubts over him.
I still think he is pure class and will come good but if the match was next week, he would not be anywhere near the starting team.
Another in the same boat is his England and Wasps colleague, Paul Sackey. Big, quick and strong, he has all the attributes you would want in a Lions winger but his star has fallen as well. What these two cases prove, is that individual players are very reliant on the team they play for performing well. It is very hard for a winger like Sackey to excel when the backs inside him have as much creative flair as you would find in an empty room.
Likewise a scrum-half is not going to show up well if his pack is producing poor ball and he is on the back foot all the time, but that is one of the positions where there is no doubt who would be in the team.
Mike Blair has backed up being on the shortlist for world player of the year with three cracking performances. His core skills are all there but it was his vision and understanding of where the cracks in the defence were that shone for me. He made a number of breaks himself, especially against the All Blacks, but he also played others into space on many occasions.
Who Blair's half-back partner would be is a harder question to answer. Blair and Cipriani is a mouth-watering prospect but not at the moment. If he gets back to fitness, I have no doubt Jonny Wilkinson would come into the mix, but he is injured.
Which leaves the stand-off cupboard relatively bare. Wales had Stephen Jones and James Hook, Ireland had Ronan O'Gara and Scotland had Phil Godman at No.10. You could rule Godman out and, although he is a safe pair of hands, O'Gara did not play particularly well recently. I would plump for Hook over Jones mainly for his pace and for being a bit more creative.
Like Blair, there are a few certainties. On one wing would be Shane Williams, the world player of the year, in the centre would be Brian O'Driscoll, at full-back it would be Lee Byrne and at tight-head, Scotland's own Euan Murray.
The area of the team that is most competitive is the back-row. Each country has so many good players that it makes selection very tough so this headache is only compounded for the Lions.
With Wales, we have seen how quickly things can change. Ryan Jones, before the autumn, was being touted for Lions captaincy but did not play well. Beside him though, Andy Powell came from nowhere to be probably the star player of the series and would get the No.8 spot quite easily for the Lions.
The openside position is very tight as well. David Wallace, Tom Rees, Martyn Williams and John Barclay are all top players playing well at the moment and all would fill the jersey with no issue. I have given the nod to Barclay because, whereas the others are playing just about as well as they can, Barclay has even more to give and that could come out in a Lions environment.
So here is my team that I am sure will cause you to spill your cornflakes and maybe make you utter an expletive or two. My apologies if I cause any offence.
