Bowler shines in ‘clinical’ win for Scotland
WILLIAM DICKJuly 29 2008

Sean Weeraratna last night produced his best international bowling display as Scotland crushed Norway to maintain their perfect European Championship record in Dublin.

The Greenock seamer picked up six for 24 to help skittle the hapless Scandinavians for just 43, the second lowest total ever against Scotland.

The captain, Ryan Watson, then completed the rout with a quickfire 18 in a match which was finished an hour before the scheduled lunch break! Watson was eventually out after clouting two 4s and a huge 6, but the Saltires raced to their target in just 8.2 overs.

However, the coach, Pete Steindl, warned his side not to be fooled by the mis-match and insisted the real tournament begins today against the Netherlands.

Steindl's side have brushed aside the challenge of Denmark and Italy, as well Norway. But they must beat the Dutch today and Ireland on Thursday to be sure of lifting their first ever Euro title.

Steindl said: "All you can do is beat the opposition you are up against and the guys did that in a pretty clinical manner.

"But we are not kidding ourselves on. We still have to face the two toughest teams in the tournament and we have to keep concentrating on producing our best cricket when it really matters."

Steindl continued: "I'm delighted for Sean because he put the ball in the right places and got his reward."

However, despite his match-winning display, Weeraratna is not guaranteed his place against a Dutch side led by the former Scotland coach, Peter Drinnen.

The Scots have bolstered their squad with three senior players for the final two games and Weeraratna's seam bowling berth could go to his Greenock team-mate, Dewald Nel.

The Arbroath youngster, Matthew Parker, will certainly drop out after a successful debut yesterday. The 18-year-old claimed two for nine and his first appearance will net his club £500 from Cricket Scotland for producing a new senior cap.

Gavin Hamilton and Fraser Watts also come into contention to face the Dutch in today's ODI at Clontarf.

Steindl added: "As a coach you always want competition for places and Sean has certainly given us something to think about but, with Dewald available, we have options.

"I was also delighted with young Matthew's debut and he can take great confidence from how well he bowled."

The Norwegians, who lost their final five wickets for just four runs, managed two more than Fiji's 41 against the Scots in 2001.
