Celtic are understood to have made a £1.25m offer for Barry Robson in a final attempt to prise the midfielder from Dundee United.

The Tannadice club have already received a bid of £1m for the Scottish international from Nottingham Forest but Celtic yesterday upped the stakes for the 29-year-old.

It is likely to be a day of frenetic activity for Gordon Strachan, the Celtic manager, as the transfer window closes at midnight. He has a bid of £2.5m plus Derek Riordan on the table for Kyle Lafferty, the 20-year-old Burnley forward. Owen Coyle, the manager of the Turf Moor club, is believed to be holding out for £4m for the Northern Ireland internationalist. This is thought to be too rich for Celtic who may cool their interest for now.

Coyle also dismissed reports of an Old Firm tug of war for the player, saying: "We have received no bid whatsoever from Rangers for Kyle."

United sources have already, however, confirmed interest in Robson from Celtic, Burnley and Nottingham Forest.

"We're still thinking about Forest's offer," said Craig Levein, the United manager, yesterday. "We'll discuss it again in the morning and make a decision from there."

Strachan, who expressed disappointment after last night's game against Motherwell was postponed, would make no comment on signings.

Motherwell had an offer for Steven Hammell, the former Fir Park left-back, rejected by Southend, while Mark McGhee, the Fir Park manager, is keen on Bob Malcolm, the Derby player. "We have not signed anyone yet but we hope to make some signings before tomorrow night," McGhee said.
