Katherine Grainger, Scotland's three-times world champion, showed that she is still at the top of the pecking order in Great Britain's world-class squad with a five-second win in yesterday's final British team trials at Hazewinkel.

It is the fourth year in suc-cession that the Glaswegian has won the trials and it leaves her in control of her own destiny for the summer inter-national season, as well as showing that she is on course for her main target: Olympic gold in Beijing.

Grainger, twice an Olympic silver medallist, took an early lead, leaving a photo-finish battle in her wake. "That's the way I would have wanted to race it," she said of her win in 7:35.91. "I like to get out front and control it from there."

The trials are when the gloves come off and the fight is on after a winter of sparring in training. "It's a bit like that," said Grainger. "You know everyone's strengths but you have to be totally ruthless. The only thing that matters is crossing the line first."
