Sorenstam storms to victory
ELSPETH BURNSIDEMay 12 2008

Glasgow's Janice Moodie was the top Scot after a final round 68 as Annika Sorenstam continued her impressive return to form with a hugely impressive seven shot victory in the Michelob ULTRA Open yesterday at the Kingsmill Resort in Virginia.

Sorenstam, who missed much of last season through injury, claimed her 72nd title on the LPGA Tour thanks to a final round 66 and a 19 under- par-total that set a new tournament record by a massive nine shots.

England's Karen Stupples, the 2004 Women's British Open Champion, closed with a 66 for 12 under par and shared second place with Americans Allison Fouch (64) and Christina Kim (69) and South Korea's Jeong Jang, who dropped a shot at the last for a 70.

Moodie opened with a 66 and had six birdies in the final round to finish on one under par, tied for 38th. It would have been even better if she hadn't dropped shots at her final two holes.

Turnberry's Mhairi McKay, the first round leader on 63, marred her tournament with a second day 77. After a 73 on Saturday, she closed with a 72 for one over par and a tie for 50th. The highlight of her closing round was holing out with a mid-iron for an eagle two at the 18th (her ninth) hole.

Catriona Matthew had a disappointing final day. The Scottish No.1 covered her last nine holes in 41 for a 79 and finished on five over par.
