Cup captaincy 2010: Lyle and Olazabal approached

After Sandy Lyle played another wonder shot to the 18th green at Augusta National to give himself a chance of making the cut, he revealed for the first time that he had been asked if he was willing to captain the European Ryder Cup team in Wales in 2010.

Sandy Lyle was delighted yesterday to be accompanied by two fat ladies - the number 88. Each player is given a badge with a number according to the order in which they register and the significance of the number for Lyle, who was among the last to arrive, was not lost.

Food for thought While the green jackets at the champions dinner were enjoying their surf'n turf meal set by defending champion Zach Johnson in the Augusta National clubhouse on Tuesday night, it was a case of anything you can do I can do better at the less celebrated neighbouring Augusta Country Club where journalists were being entertained by the European Tour.

Prodger not getting carried away Sandy Lyle is not the only Perthshire resident bidding for a third major this week. So is caddie Andy Prodger, who won with Nick Faldo here in 1989, again in the Open at Muirfield in 1987 and is now on the bag for Korean K J Choi, the world No.6.
