RANGERS players last night spoke of their determination to banish the pain of defeat in the UEFA Cup final by completing a domestic treble. David Weir and Kirk Broadfoot insisted Rangers must get back on track against Motherwell at Fir Park on Saturday as four games separate the Ibrox side from the Scottish Cup and the Clydesdale Bank Premier League title.
"We lost the game but we have come a long way," said Weir, "and we are proud of what we have done. But there is no getting away from it, we are disappointed."
He said of a Zenit St Petersburg side who scored twice in the second half to claim victory: "They took their chances, so good luck to them. It is a massive achievement to get to the final. Obviously you want to win the final, but we should be proud of ourselves."
He immediately turned his attention to the match against Motherwell: "We just have to lift ourselves. That will be a good test for us. Life is not just a matter of success after success, sometimes you get knockbacks and when we have had then this season we have responded to them in the right way. It is another test for us.
We have four games left to win a treble. That is the way we must look at it."
He said of the aftermath of dispiriting defeat: "The manager is as disappointed as were are. He did not say much in the dressing-room. It is not a time for saying much. We put everything into it and it just did not happen for us. Words are hollow at this time. It is just disappointment. There is nothing that is going to take that away or make that any better."
He insisted that it was "an achievement" to reach the final of the UEFA Cup, but added: "But we wanted to win - that is the nature of being in football. But maybe when we look back we will say that was a great achievement, but at the minute it is disappointment."
Weir, who will sit down with Walter Smith at the end of the season to decide on the next move in his career, said that the future was bright for the team. "Rangers should be operating at this level. This has given us a taste for it. It has given a lot of players a lot of confidence. Hopefully, it is something to build on,"
he said. "We have a league to win and a Scottish Cup to win. That is the priority," he added.
Broadfoot was also disappointed but determined to finish the season with success. "They were a team that tried to hit us on the break, they tried to suck us out," said the full-back of Zenit. "We always thought we could get the goal to win the game but it was not to be."
He added: "Obviously, I am very disappointed but it has been a great campaign to get here and, from a personal point of view, to play in a a European cup final was amazing. But once you are there you want to win. I can't think of words to say.
"We gave everything we had maybe on the night they had that wee bit of class. They got the goals, we didn't."
Broadfoot admitted he had a "heart in the mouth" moment just before half-time when Andrei Arshavin played the ball off his hand inside the penalty box.
"I tried to block the cross and he has hit it against my hand," said the former St Mirren player. "It is one of those ones that was so close that I could not get out of the road. If the referee had given it, it would have been harsh."
His determination was evident: "We need to to take heart. We can not go into our shell. We have a league to win and a Scottish Cup to win. It all starts on Saturday with Motherwell away."
