WAS it an admirable sign of improved dietary habits among our youth or a nauseating twist on elaborate goal celebrations? Whatever the verdict, Raith Rovers fans hope it continues.

David Goodwillie, the on-loan Dundee United teenager, twice delved into his shorts and produced a piece of melon to munch on after scoring highly-significant goals for Raith.

Had County won and Airdrie lost, the second division trophy would have been heading to Dingwall. Now, Saturday's match against Airdrie at Excelsior Stadium is crucial, the Lanarkshire side aiming to claw back a 10-point deficit.

Raith came back from 2-0 down to win 3-2, and Goodwillie said: "Last week, I didn't want to be rude and throw a bit of melon on the ground before kick-off, so I stuffed it down my shorts. This week, though, it was deliberate and I made sure I could eat it. It's tucked in, so it doesn't touch anything! I had a third piece in there because I fancied a hat trick."

The game exploded in an incredible four-goal, 10-minute spell in the first half.

Andy Barrowman scored his 24th of the season after a slick passing move in the 18th minute. Two minutes later he ghosted past the Raith keeper, but Martin Scott whipped the ball off his toes to net from eight yards.

David Templeton's reply after 25 minutes was a wonderful, curling 20-yard shot into the top corner and three minutes later, County's defence was missing as Robert Sloan released Goodwillie.

The winner came after 67 minutes as Ryan Borris fed Goodwillie 20 yards out and he again kept his cool.

John McGlynn's side are hitting top form at the best time and Goodwillie added: "We have to keep it going. We're playing well and there are only a few games left, so we can take it to the finish and get ourselves through the play-offs."
