Rangers
-
Allan McGregor
Denied the save of his career from Ronaldinho's free kick by Konrat Plautz but was protected by a brave back four amid an incessant assault 7 -
Alan Hutton
The White Cafu squared-up to the real Thierry Henry and looked the genuine article, save for a rash foul that culminated in the aforementioned Ronaldinho set-piece. A thrilling confrontation 8 -
Carlos Cuellar
Ugly Betty played beautifully. Past experience with Osasuna proved vital. The Spaniard did not put a foot wrong against Ronaldinho and offered reassurance in moments of crisis 8 -
David Weir
Caused blood-pressure surge among 50,000 fans with a mis-timed header but settled down to offer composure as the spare man 7 -
Sasa Papac
Bosnian bargain buy versus best bambino in the business. It threatened to get messy but credit to Papac for perseverance, especially when Puyol began meddling 6 -
Nacho Novo
Can retire on the fact he nut-megged Abidal and Thuram in one mesmerising move. The boy from Huelva has come a helluva long way 7 -
Barry Ferguson
Impudent first touch set the tone for a masterful midfield performance in exalted company. Did not allow Xavi and Iniesta a foothold and also supported Cousin when prudent 8 -
Kevin Thomson
A big performance required of the hitherto unobtrusive midfield player and he provided one of his best in the Hemdani holding role. Sacrificed himself for Camp Nou with a booking that summed up a selfless display 7 -
Charlie Adam
Sat beside Ferguson in the hope of retaining even a semblance of possession and refused to wilt as the ball - and numerous peach-coloured jerseys - whizzed around him 6 -
Lee McCulloch
Pressed into a largely defensive role as Puyol pushed forward in support of Messi but did the needful without any complaint 6 -
Daniel Cousin
Embraced Lilian Thuram before the game and spent the following 90 minutes attempting to bash him up. Nearly scored a thumping winner in the 80th minute 8
Substitute
-
DaMarcus Beasley (Novo, 72)
A great impact player who was the victim of a gross injustice by Konrad Plautz when flattened by Henry 5
Barcelona
-
Victor Valdes
Often pinpointed as a potential weak link with Frank Rijkaard's cast of brilliance, Valdes negotiated the first half without a notable save. Odd dangerous cross to raise his heart rate after the interval but never truly tested 6 -
Carles Puyol
The Catalans' Captain was unexpectedly shuttled out to right-back, yet displayed equal prowess at the opposite end with a sublime nutmeg on Papac. A powerhouse of a player who was not defensively exerted 7 -
Lilian Thuram
France's most-capped player was troubled by Cousin's physical presence early in the game, occasionally looking forlornly to the referee for assistance. Steadied as the game progressed but not his most comfortable evening overall. 6 -
Gabriel Milito
Was something of a fitness doubt beforehand, but the Argentine took his place at the heart of the defence. Booked for scything Cousin early in the second period and was occasionally wayward in some of his distribution 6 -
Eric Abidal
The Frenchman had signaled a desire for revenge, having been part of his nation's two defeats to Scotland in the Euro 2008 qualifiers. Displayed fantastic athleticism over the 90 minutes, outstripping Novo for pace 7 -
Xavi Herndandez
If Puyol is Barca's heart, then Xavi is the brains of the operation. Dictated much of the play but, whatever patterns he wove, they could not create a goals as Rangers unpicked them thread by thread 7 -
Andres Iniesta
Has been praised as the club's most consistent performer this season when firmly establishing his credentials. A tidy accomplice to Xavi who tried a couple of wayward long distance shots as Barcelona pressed 7 -
Eidur Gudjohnsen
The Icelander's inclusion was the subject of much derisory debate within the travelling media. Headed over an early opportunity from a Xavi corner and continued to try hard without every truly convincing 6 -
Lionel Messi
The hottest player in the world right now was denied an early notch by Cuellar's goal-line clearance. Drew bookings for Papac and Weir with his nimble footwork and was probably the pick of Barca's fearsome attacking trident 7 -
Thierry Henry
Oddly flitted around the periphery of much of the action. Spooned one prime opportunity over the bar in the second half and generally cut a frustrated figure. Replaced by Giovani Dos Santos late on . 6 -
Ronaldinho
First free-kick attempt was woefully wobbly. His second simply wobbled McGregor's bar. Later appealed for a penalty when Hutton blocked his shot and, overall, was short of his sublime best as Rangers snapped and snarled 6
Substitute
-
Giovani Dos Santos (Henry, 82)
little time to impress 3
Why are you making commenting on The Herald only available to subscribers?
It should have been a safe space for informed debate, somewhere for readers to discuss issues around the biggest stories of the day, but all too often the below the line comments on most websites have become bogged down by off-topic discussions and abuse.
heraldscotland.com is tackling this problem by allowing only subscribers to comment.
We are doing this to improve the experience for our loyal readers and we believe it will reduce the ability of trolls and troublemakers, who occasionally find their way onto our site, to abuse our journalists and readers. We also hope it will help the comments section fulfil its promise as a part of Scotland's conversation with itself.
We are lucky at The Herald. We are read by an informed, educated readership who can add their knowledge and insights to our stories.
That is invaluable.
We are making the subscriber-only change to support our valued readers, who tell us they don't want the site cluttered up with irrelevant comments, untruths and abuse.
In the past, the journalist’s job was to collect and distribute information to the audience. Technology means that readers can shape a discussion. We look forward to hearing from you on heraldscotland.com
