Glamour Chicago friendly on cards
MARK WILSONApril 18 2007

CELTIC are poised to add a friendly match against Chicago Fire to complete the schedule for their close season trip to America.

The Parkhead club have been invited to provide the opposition for the prestigious MLS All-Star game in Denver on July 19, which could feature David Beckham, and will again seek to raise their brand profile in the States this summer.

Gordon Strachan, the club's manager, has been keen to add a second match to their trans-Atlantic journey and Celtic are now likely to stop off at Chicago on the way back to Scotland. Negotiations for a match on July 21 or 22 at the Toyota Park are currently at an advanced stage.

"We cannot confirm anything yet but it would be correct to say that there have been discussions," said Chris Bailey, a spokesman for the MLS club. "We need to dot all the Is and cross all the Ts before there is an announcement of the date."

Shunsuke Nakamura, meanwhile, expects to be fit for the side's potential Bank of Scotland Premierleague title party at Kilmarnock on Sunday.

The Japanese midfielder suffered hamstring problems during last weekend's Tennent's Scottish Cup semi-final victory over St Johnstone, but did gym work at Parkhead yesterday.

He hopes to join first team training on Thursday and be available for the trip to Rugby Park, in which a victory will guarantee Celtic retention of the championship.

Nakamura was granted little rest after playing for Japan at the World Cup finals last summer. Strachan admitted he may offer the player a period out of action before the Scottish Cup final once the league is secured. "We need to look at that, and I will do so as soon as we get things done and dusted," said the manager.

After all the hullaballoo about the 'disasterous' pre-season (which extended beyond the season start) I would have thought there would be less flying involved.

It would appear that this type of venture is an excellent value stream for the club as well as good for enhancing the brand profile.

I certainly hope the rumours of entertaining Chelsea at Paradise are well wide of the mark, i'd leave that shower to their south side bretheren, they bring nothing but grief.

"excellent value stream" and "enhancing the brand profile" ... you just have to laugh at the utter bildge from the green brigade at times...

Oh and one last thing, weren't Celtic at Stamford Bridge pre season last year.... of course when they played Chelsea then, it was a "glamour friendly" which the fans couldn't get enough of. How memories are short when you've got an axe to grind and a chip on your shoulder.

It's scary how bitter you can get after a couple of trophyless seasons. Here Blue Shield...have a Murphys

You could have heard me in the pub as you were drinking your Murphys when I read your bhoy friend's marketing assessment of the US tour dates for this year.

As for the rest, just commenting on how bitter you need to slag off a Rangers friendly match against a club which you yourselves played in the last 12 months!

As the proposed Rangers game isn't even mentioned in the original Herald article, me thinks bitterness rests with Uncle John in England.

I read the comments on here and I agree with John and I for one will be very dissapointed if Celtic play Chelsea. My two sons are I are fortunate that we can go to all of Celtics away games in Europe, Testimonials and friendlies anywhere in the world. Last year we we were on the verge of going to Stamford Bridge for the friendly game but when we saw the Chelsea message boards and their supporters waiting on the Celtic supporters coming we pulled out. After reading the reports and talking to other good Celtic supporters it was good that we did, so Celtic please don't invite Inter City Scum to visit Paradise!

Maybe if you didn't sing dongs praising a group who murdered innocent londoners, while you are in london, the big bad chelsea boys would leave you alone
