Uefa cup handed to city ahead of final
GERRY BRAIDENMarch 16 2007

THE Uefa Cup was formally handed over to Glasgow yesterday for safekeeping until the final in the city on May 16.

Conservative estimates put the value of staging the final in Glasgow at £15m, but the 2002 Champions League final involving Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid netted £20m.

Scott Taylor, chief executive of the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: "We could well be in for a Spanish-German final, which is fantastic news. London is also a growth market for us, so tens of thousands of Spurs fans would be just fine as well. Either way we'll experience festivities on a huge scale."

Sevilla's chief goal scorer Enzo Maresca, who flew to Glasgow from Ukraine in the early hours of yesterday, handed over the trophy his team won last year to Glasgow Lord Provost Liz Cameron.

At yesterday's draw, defen-ding champion Sevilla was pitted against Tottenham in the quarter finals.

AZ Alkmaar was drawn against Werder Bremen, Bayer Leverkusen was drawn against Osasuna, and Espanyol drawn against Benfica.
