Scotland's cricketers last night sent an SOS home for extra supplies of a special energy drink after going through a six-week supply in just over a fortnight.

Officials admit they were caught out by the fierce heat and humidity in Mombasa during the recent Tri-Series with Kenya and Canada.

Supplies were also diminished by the stomach bug which affected almost every one of the 15-strong squad.

Now they have ordered more of the powder to be taken out to Nairobi for next week's World Cricket League.

Mike Stanger, Cricket Scotland spokesman, said: "The powder is mixed with water for consumption during games to keep fluid and energy levels up.

"Back-up staff thought they'd taken enough to last throughout the six-week trip to UAE and Kenya, but conditions really have been extreme.

"The guys went through 160 litres of water during the first game against Kenya last week and 220 litres as they beat Canada the following day. Additional supplies are being sent out at the weekend."

Meanwhile, coach Peter Drinnen last night insisted that former Yorkshire star John Blain has emerged as a genuine all-rounder following his match-winning heroics against Canada on Tuesday.

The Australian also revealed that Blain will always have a place in his plans even if he fails to find another county for the new season.

Drinnen said: "It's not for me to say whether John should still be playing county cricket but let's just say I'll be delighted the longer he is available to me.

"He is simply a wonderful cricketer and a great bloke. Without him we wouldn't have got past the post against Canada.

"But, having got us three important wickets, John showed he has become a genuine all-rounder by batting brilliantly when the chips were down.

"He is a confidence player, and that performance will have done wonders for him."

Blain, the former Northamptonshire player, was released by Yorkshire last season but has the chance to put himself in the shop window at the World Cup in March.

The pace bowler and lower- order batsman enjoyed a day off with his mates yesterday before travelling to Nairobi tomorrow.

Scotland open their World Cricket League campaign against Ireland on Tuesday.
