Limond focused on taking chance to blossom in Garden

Willie Limond will face a new opponent on his American debut after boxing politics placed Dmitriy Salita on standby for a shot at the WBA light-welterweight title against Andreas Kotelnik, writes Darryl Broadfoot.

For Limond, the menacing man in his midst is immaterial as he prepares for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to dance on the hallowed canvas at Madison Square Garden, New York.

Limond's journeyman existence was rudely interrupted by his valiant Commonwealth lightweight title defeat against Amir Khan.

Limond has been confirmed on the undercard for Joe Calzaghe's latest blockbuster, against Roy Jones Jnr, which has been rescheduled for November 8 after the undefeated world middleweight champions damaged a wrist in training.

The Garthamlock fighter will step-up to light-welterweight to face Darling Jimenez if the Kotelnik/Salita fight goes ahead. Limond is more concerned with following in famous footsteps at The Garden, venue for Muhammad Ali's first fight with Joe Frazier and Ken Buchanan's contentious loss to Roberto Duran in 1972.

"It doesn't matter who I fight," said Limond. "It is every fighter's dream to fight at Madison Square Garden. It is the most famous fight venue in the world.

"The Khan fight has given me a new audience and new opportunities. I aim to take this chance to show America what British fans saw against Khan. I may have lost that fight but I was not given a hope of causing him any trouble and but for a couple of things, I should have beat him."
