Burns takes unusual route on comeback trail
DARRYL BROADFOOTOctober 26 2007

Ricky Burns will tonight go Oriental in his bid to win the British super-featherweight title at the third attempt.

Burns will top the bill in a unique event staged at the See Woo Chinese restaurant at Saracen Cross, Possilpark in Glasgow, reckoned to be one of the largest establishments of its type in Scotland.

Having been seven months out of the ring after having lost to Carl Johanneson at Leeds Town Hall in February, the end of a co-management deal and hiring of a new trainer have helped to rebuild the Coat-bridge fighter's career.

Tonight's eight-round bout against the durable Bed Odumattey will be his third inside a month. He is also scheduled to fight in Cardiff next week and will round off a hectic period at Meadowbank on December 15.

It is a re-education plan devised by Alex Morrison, his manager, to overcome the psychologically scarring losses to Johanneson and Alex Arthur; fights Morrison believes the 24-year-old wasn't ready for.

"I feel he was rushed into those fights but now I'm solely in charge of his management, I think he needs to fight regularly to really learn his trade again before we think about another title shot," said Morrison.

"Ricky is highly regarded: when he made his professional debut, Marvin Hagler was in attendance and identified him as the real prospect that night. He has a lot of natural ability but we just need to give him some focus and guidance on how to use it productively."

To that end, Burns has begun training with Billy Nelson, who worked with Scott Harrison throughout his WBO featherweight reign. Burns concedes he lacked the wherewithal to challenge Arthur and Johanneson seriously, but has pledged to return wiser for the adversity.

"I think it all came too soon," he said. "I had some time off after Johanneson and now Alex is keeping me busy. It will help me to find my way again and sometimes you have to take a step back to take two steps forward. I have never fought in a Chinese restaurant before but it is all part of a bigger plan.

"Johanneson is fighting Kevin Mitchell at the start of next year and, with my programme of fights, I intend being ready to make up for that loss."
