Sutton and Epsom in action against Old Whitgift's

Sutton and Epsom RFC's stars tore Old Mid-Whitgiftian apart inSaturday's London and South East Division one clash.

The home side had no answer to S & E's forward power and werewell beaten in the tackle by the Midwives.

Midwives made Sutton work for a win that moves them up to sixth place inthe league, despite squandering a series of opportunity's either sideof the turnaround.

The visitors will have to work a lot harder this weekend when they faceBasingstoke at Rugby Lane, who will match them both up front and at theback. S & E started well and were soon sapping the strength of the oldboys' forwards, pushing them back in tight scrums and out-ruckingthem in loose play. Sutton's pressure paid off within 10 minutes, thepack driving over for top try scorer number eight Tom Long to claim anunconverted try.

Sutton continued to dominate the half and turned around at 6-18 after asecond try from full back Steve Winslett, side stepping his way overbetween the posts, and two penalties from stand off David Nimb andfly-half Henry Higgins. Nimb also converted Winslett's try. Old Midsburst back into life after the break but after messing up a beautifullyset up four-man overlap, their best move of the game, were forced tosettle for a penalty from Higgins.

Lock Kerry Hargood and Tom Long scored two more tries to put the matchbeyond the Old Mids.

But the Old Mids refused to lay down, and in the final minutes finallybroke S & E's defence. Replacement prop John Seaton scored theironly try of the match when he bundled over from close range.

S & E's replacement flanker Mark Stanley wrapped up the match, scoring under the post in the final seconds.
