Armed with only a four-day crash course in acting, 47 children put on a version of Whistle Down the Wind in front of admiring friends and families at the Radlett Centre on Thursday.

Manager of the Aldenham Avenue arts venue Martin Gardner said the workshops, which run throughout the year, have proved amazingly popular and the next one -- a five-day course from August 17 to 21 -- is already sold out. "It all went really well. About a 100 people came to the performance. Whistle Down the Wind is about a group of children who find a guy in their barn who is on the run, and they mistake him for Jesus," he said.

The play, a 40-minute, abridged version of the story, is divided into two halves: one for eight to 11-year-olds and the other for 12 to 16-year-olds.
