SWIMMING.

The Kingston Festival of Sport continued at the weekend with the Borough Swimming Gala held at the Malden Centre.

The full programme was held over Saturday and Sunday evening and was open to swimmers who either lived, attended full time education or were members of a swimming club, within the Royal Borough. Kingston University (KU) entered an energetic team in the senior men and senior women's events with representation also from Kingston Royals Swimming Club (KR) and neighbouring clubs Epsom and District (ED), Leatherhead (L), Sutton and Cheam (SC), Spartans (S) and Kingston Ladies (KL) in the younger age groups.

Catherine Castell (ED) had a particularly successful weekend taking home five trophies representing wins in all events. Older sister Caroline (ED) matched this collection with three trophies and two silver medals. Andrew Wakefield (KR) entertained spectators with four fine swims claiming the winners rostrum and trophies as his own with Jason Foo taking gold in the fifth event. It was the same for Jessica Grimwood (KR) claiming four trophies with Riaghnach Loughran (ED) seizing gold in the fifth.

Justine Herbert took home three trophies with Nicholas Wakefield (KR) and Sean Duffy (KR) preventing his clean sweep. Between Paul Button (KU) and Andrew Macleod (KU) they won all five events while Peter Bonner (KR) will be cleaning three trophies in the coming year.

Stephen Cook, chairman of Kingston Sports Council and co-ordinator for the gala, said: "I am extremely pleased with the competitor response to the gala, there have been some exceptional results. Over the past three years this event has gone from strength to strength."
