Following his outstanding achievement in winning the BRSCC Super Road Saloon Championships against all the odds, Edgware racing driver Nick Kaye is seeking sponsorship with a view to racing in the TVR Tuscans series this year.
Kaye, of Cavendish Drive, is a tree surgeon by profession, and racing is his hobby, which he hopes to make his new career.
In only his second season, and without sponsorship, he beat rivals with much more experience behind them in his red Lotus Sunbeam 2.2 litre engine.
Kaye took the prestigious title with an impressive 200 points. There were 13 races during the season, with the best 11 scores to count. He achieved four thirds, six seconds and two wins, one overall and three lap records, finishing fourth overall out of 90 drivers.
Consistently good driving, sheer determination, courage and a reliable engine enabled him to capture the trophy, which will be presented in February.
In the final race at Donington Park in October, Nick needed only to come second in his class to win, which he did sensationally by a point.
This he did comfortably, quite an accomplishment considering the quality of the field.
His victims included Graham Millward, racing a Vauxhall Astra, maintained by a team of six mechanics and sponsorship from Vent Axia, and with 12 years racing experience behind him.
Doug Anderson, from Dumfries, with 10 years experience, drove a Peugeot 205 (weighing 90kg less than Kaye's Lotus), prepared by Longman and a team of mechanics. By comparison, Nick finances and maintains his own car, and financial backing would help him in his quest to repeat the feat this year.
Without doubt Kaye has enjoyed a meteoric rise. With an avid interest in racing since childhood, he took it up with a serious commitment last year by investing in his own racing car. At the end of the season, he finished third in his class with three class wins and seventh out of a total of 84 drivers from all four categories.
He was also voted Driver of the Year 1996, a prestigious award for the best novice drive.
