CRIME and disorder are subjects on which I have commented especially in relation to our local police but this week it becomes particularly pertinent. Last Monday we had an armed robbery at the Spar Stores in Rickmansworth Lane. I am not a reporter but while driving by during the morning the shop was cordoned off with Police tape, an officer in crime scene white overalls emerged and it was obvious that this was a major crime investigation. I have had various verbal accounts of what went on but this is all heresay. The point is that we read daily in the national press about major armed raids but it comes home when it is so near to home. This is not something that is a local problem. This is a general malaise in our society today. No amount of extra police on the beat are going to stop this sort of thing, we need, as a nation, to get to the root and cause of the problem.

COMMUNITY wardens is one suggestion that has been put forward in an effort to reduce local crime and disorder and the District Council are keen to progress this but I am advised by a reliable source that the County Council are blocking the idea. I will report later on this very important issue.

BYGONE Days usually provoke a lot of interest but last week I commented upon the deliberate mistake with regard to the picture of old Chalfont St Peter. Notwithstanding my comments no one has come back to me confirming or denying that there was an error.

I am currently redecorating and have come across a lot of old pictures, in particular scenes of Chalfont St Peter in days gone by. Subject to the Editor's permission I will submit some of them for consideration to be printed in these pages. There's a bit of technology required here so please bear with me.

THE state of our roads is a subject to which I return with regularity. We are told that certain works are now to be put in hand, but meanwhile and for the benefit of anyone who rides a bike along Bull Lane, beware. There is a very deep hole opposite the tennis club, and, being filled with water could be horrendously dangerous for cyclists.

GOLDEN Jubilee publicity is certainly taking off now and last week I again mentioned the Jubilee Celebrations that we hope will take place this year. While looking through my old photos I came across lots of pictures of the Silver Jubilee which took place in 1977. Yes, I am that old. It will be interesting to compare these pictures with any we are able to take this year. Again subject to the Editor's permission I may be able to publish one or two over the coming months.

CONTRIBUTIONS are requested from readers by my colleagues in these pages. If anyone in Chalfont St Peter has anything interesting they would like to be aired please do not hesitate to contact me on ptl@peter-lole.co.uk or write to me at the Chiltern District Council.
