IT WAS a game of two halves as Woodford entertained Diss with the home side just coming out on top, 22-18.

After a superb first half, which saw the home side notch up a convincing 16-point lead, the Highams men finished the contest fighting to hold on to a winning margin.

It was Diss who opened the scoring, kicking an early penalty to which Woodford soon replied with one of their own from the boot of Weekes.

There then followed a period of balanced play, with attacks from both sides proving un-able to breach the opposing defensive lines.

Woodford claimed the first try of the game when a fine move featuring Will Hepworth and Ben Dilley ended in a try in the left corner from hooker Paul Childs. Andy Weekes converted the try to put the score at 10-3.

At this stage Woodford were clearly on top, dominating possession from the scrum and lineout. The Highams men scored two quick tries and a cricket score looked on the cards.

But for the rest of the half, Woodford couldn't capitalise on their dominance and the visitors managed to claim three points back with a penalty.

Diss emerged in the second half looking like a different team and they threw everything into attack. The Woodford defensive line struggled to contain the rampant Diss backs and gave away 16 penalties and one penalty try.

When another period of intense pressure from the visitors resulted in a try in the corner, it looked as if the Highams men might have thrown the game away.

But with a refusal to surrender their defensive organisation, as they had against Diss earlier in the season, Woodford managed to hold on for victory.

With two matches coming up against opposition they have already beaten this season, Woodford will need to take the opportunity to be consistent for a full 90 minutes.
