Pop: Pearl and the Puppets

Thu, 8pm, Whistlebinkies, South Bridge, Edinburgh, 0131 557 5114; Sat, 8.30pm, King Tut's, St Vincent St, Glasgow, £5, 0141 221 5279

Counting James Blunt as one of your friends on Myspace may be an ominous sign but Kirkintilloch's 21-year-old Pearl is blessed with talent that enables her to rise above her contemporaries. Having already worked on material with uber-producer Stephen Street, and blessed with a distinctive voice, she and her merry ensemble make acoustic-led music that hops from style to style. Make Me Smile is the sound of Blondie if they'd listened to folk instead of punk, while Because I Do is a perfect slice of gentle tunesmithery Considering Scotland's recent run of talented singer-songwriter types, it's advisable to investigate her now.
