Backing Go Ape is a walk in the park for councillors
JAMES MORGAN reporterMarch 26 2008

They had hoped that a walk among the pine trees and the bluebells would be enough to persuade councillors that the tranquility of Pollok Park should not be disturbed. But campaigners against plans for tree-top assault course within one of Scotland's historic parks were mistaken.

The members of Glasgow City Council's Planning Committee yesterday voted 14 to 6 in favour of Go Ape's application to install zip slides and rope swings in the treetops of the North Wood of Pollok Park.

Following a formal site inspection and subsequent hearing at the City Chambers, councillors were persuaded that the course would have "minimal impact" on the natural environment and the character of the woodland.

The council received 881 written objections to the planning application, from park goers who feel the course will be noisy, expensive, and will ruin the experience of visitors to the Burrell Collection gallery.

But, on balance, the majority of the committee was convinced the adventure course will enhance Europe's Best Park by offering physical activities for families and, in particular, older teenagers - something park managers feel is lacking.

Go Ape director Jerome Mayhew argued the 881 who objected were outnumbered by "tens of thousands" of others who would enjoy the adventure course each year.

The decision to approve a 21-year lease was criticised yesterday by campaigners Save Pollok Park, who called on Scottish ministers to overturn the decision, which they are obliged to scrutinise as the council has a financial interest.

Bill Fraser, of the Save Pollok Park Campaign, said: "We are not against a Go Ape facility in Glasgow but this is the wrong place for it.

"We now ask the Scottish Government to call in this application because it raises important issues about how the decision was made.

"Nearly 900 written objections, thousands of park users who turned up at public events and over 4000 signatures to our petition justify this demand."

The result was also condemned by Nicola Sturgeon, MSP for Govan and Deputy First Minister.

She said: "The public consultation carried out by the council was, in my view, inadequate and I would now urge Go Ape to carry out another public consultation before proceeding any further."

The day began with a turbulent site visit where councillors touring the woods were heckled by protesters who felt their views had not been listened to.

Ronan Paddison, 60, from Pollokshields, said: "This is the last substantial area of peaceful woodland left in Pollok Park. It's magical. But this is all going to change."

Campaigners held a banner in the spot where the Go Ape Cabin would be built, 30 yards from the Burrell Collection, to illustrate that it would be clearly visible through the glass gallery wall - the Burrell's unique design feature.

Jenny MacKinnon, from Strathbungo, said: "Do you think if the Burrell Architects were choosing their site now, they would place the museum next to an adventure course?"

At the subsequent hearing in Chambers, Go Ape explained to the committee that their facility helps young people engage in physical activity and combats the "cotton wool culture" that is developing in Britain.

Mr Mayhew told the committee he respected the views of park goers who would prefer the woods to remain as they are, but he felt many of the 881 objections were in fact based on "misinformation".

Local ward Councillor Colin Deans was invited to address the committee and told the members he was "shocked at the protesters' lack of faith in the team that made Pollok Europe's Best Park".

He said: "Do not be scared off by these protesters. They are the same people who opposed the kids playground, the mountain bike track and even the Burrell Collection. They oppose almost anything."

If I may correct an inaccuracy in this report
"The day began with a turbulent site visit where councillors touring the woods were heckled by protesters who felt their views had not been listened to."
I was at the park and walked round with the councillors, I only witnessed one protester vocalising his frustration and he was quickly brought into line by other protesters. What we did vocalise our frustration at were the several Go APe representatives who chose to try to debate and argue with peaceful protetsers, who eventually gave them short shrift

Staggering arrogance or staggering stupidity i am not sure which.

Sam, you beat me to it. What a shocking comment. Is he really making that claim about all the campaigners? They're his constituents, and surely will remember this even if the next local election is delayed to 2012.

Yep - and much worse. Whether it is arrogance or stupidty or a combination of both I can not say. I don't know Mr Deans personally, but his performance at yesterday's meeting beggared belief. From others who have had more dealings with the man, I am led to believe that is fairly typical of him.

Incidentally, I am just one of the thousands of "protestors" who did not object to the Burrell or anything else in Pollok

Maybe councillors took the normally sensible stand point that anything that Chic Young opposes has to be a good thing.

Campaigners- You should really pursue the call in this decision from the Government on the basis of "Conflict of loyalties". As the local Authority have negotiated a 21 year lease with this company- you could always argue this was a "fait a compli" and the Local authority had a financial incestive to push this through. Independant studies should be carried out here.

This is not what we need in glasgow and i will protest all the way until we get our say on this. This is not over and the labour will be wiped out in the next Local elections in Glasgow.

Yes, you keep protesting until YOU get what YOU want. This new feature will encourage a host of new users to come and enjoy the park. It is not a place exclusive to dog walkers and the snobs who attended the public meeting a few weeks ago on this matter. This is a tremendous victory for the young in the City and for our fabulous Parks. The Parks are for all of us in the City and not a select few who think they own them and ‘know best’ Well done Glasgow City Council – especially the SNP councillors who voted for this – for once they didn’t take the easy option and vote politically rather than for what was right.

Mo some simple arithmetic for you. Even if running well this attraction will bring no more than 30000 people to it, now compare that with the number of folk of all ages who will stop using the park due to losing its quiet tranquility in the North Wood.
It is usually a sign of losing the argument when you have to resort to name calling ".... dog walkers and snobs" I am neither. The public meeting was attended by a broad spectrum of Glaswegians from all social stratas and all ages.
The point is the park already heavily used by people of all ages, this is a myth that this development will encourage young people to use the park, firstly young people already use the park go to it any weekend you will see lots of young folk using the park not just for walking or cycling but using its many sports fields. Who do you think are the main users of the Mountain Bike trail? The various sports fields.

Lesson learned here is that the majority of the city's councillors have no interest in what is appropriate for city property or what the people want their primary concern is appeasing the guys with the money and getting votes.

Well said Gavin. Though I have to confess to being a "dog walker" and I do get a bit cheesed at the constant sniping by the tiny minority of Glaswegians who support Go Ape against dog walkers. I pay my council tax and I am perfectly entitled to use our parks.

I woudl suggest that the "snobs" are the ones who are incapable of recognising the fact that Go Ape will be totally outwith the price range of thousands of Glasgow families who already use Pollok Park for healthy exercise and enjoying the outdoors free of charge.

Mulross,

There are many, many things outwith the price range of thousands of Glasgow families. So what?

Carry on enjoying THE GROUND for your free and healthy outdoor exercise and allow those who wish to spend their cash the use of the AIR SPACE. They call it co-existance in my book.

Yes the councillor's correct when he says that a core of those opposing this scheme are opposed to everything, and I think Muldross you're well aware of the fact. Against "Tesco Town" (rather have a pi$hy wee Morrisons, an over priced M&S and Sainsburys - I mention these stores only because I've never met the "activists" shopping in Farmfoods alongside me!), Against the new flats, Against the new medical building at Glasgow Uni, Against Ashton Lane, Against ..............

Incidentaly the last time I visited the Burrell Colection the sight that greeted my daughter and I through the feature glass wall was 4 teenagers knocking back the Buckie and giving everyone "the finger".
Hmmm, peaceful North Woods eh? Or am I to believe that this was a one off, or maybe softening up tactics by Go Ape? Aye right.

When it's built , try it, you might even find it's fun.

Not sure where you are getting your views from, but having been involved in this campaign since January, I am certainly not aware of either this group being against every thing, on the contrary they recogonise Go APe as an excellent facility but believe this is the wrong location.
Ask your self this, why does the best park in Europe require development? when there are many parks in Glasgow that clearly require development, (hint for answer its to do with the Burrell) Go Ape will use the facilities of the Burrel for their corporate parties, this is where they make most of their money.
One constant of many supporting Go Ape is to minimize the impact this will have, in the North Wood it is quiet and enjoyed by many, will it still be so when Go APe is there? dont think so.
Hope you feel better after your rant but please try to add to the debate and not just rant.
ps I am a Farmfoods shopper and I use Lidl etc as well

Well, the fact that Pollok Park was given to the people of Glasgow (with conditions attached) for their enjoyment and NOT so that a commercial company could make makey from it is quite relevant imo.

Your ill-informed rant and the fact that you side with Cllr Deans in his views of the campaigners (based ENTIRELY on prejudice and NOT on any facts) says far more about you than the campaigners.

What gets me is the argument that this is good for the youngsters of Glasgow. As children have to be accompanied by at least one adult, it will cost £45 for a child to 'play' on this facility. How many poor people will be able to afford that? Hint - Job Seekers Allowance for an adult is £59.15 a week. The minimum wage for over 21's is £5.35, and there are plenty of people on minimum wage.

This is a corporate facility for companies to run 'team building' courses and for some of us who can afford to splash out a great deal of money giving their kids a great day out. But for the rest of us, for the rest of the time, we can only stand and watch.

There is plenty of green ground surrounding Glasgow, much more suitable than Pollok Park. But hey, Glasgow City Council labour party is so far up ther erse of big business that you can barely see the soles of their shoes. For New Labour, Glasgow parks are just another business opportunity to be maximised. After all theres little or no money to be made in people just walking through a park.

Totally agree Mo.
I love my city and would preserve all that is good....but not in some frozen past unalterable for future needs. I opposed the Botanic Garden Nightclub- a smoking drinking den located in a beatiful haven.
Go ape is an outdoor healthy exercise me and my friends and family will enjoy; we could of course drive 60 miles to aberfoyle in our SUVs but maybe thats not very environmentally friendly!
Parks for people not dogs or drunks!!
