Scots who make an impact on the international stage are to have their work recognised for the first time in the Scottish Politician of the Year Awards.
The awards, organised by The Herald and in their ninth year, are to go beyond those elected to office to reward Scots who make an impact globally while working within the public or political sphere.
The shortlist for the International Scot Award is still being drawn up, and readers of The Herald are welcome to put forward their own suggestions. Sponsored by Keppie Design, the remit is to recognise an individual or group who has made a significant impact in promoting Scotland's political, economic, cultural or charitable initiatives at home or abroad, using global links and networks in a creative and innovative fashion.
Those who could be up for consideration include Scots who are active in international diplomacy, or working in international development charity.
The award could go to a Scottish politician prominent in international affairs, such as International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander, or one of the country's seven Members of the European Parliament.
Cultural ambassadors for Scotland with international stature include Sir Sean Connery, as well as many younger actors building a Hollywood profile, while the Black Watch production by the National Theatre of Scotland has recently had a powerful effect on American audiences as an ambassador for the Scottish arts.
Sir Tom Hunter, the entrepreneur at the forefront of international development philanthropic work, is a Scot having a big impact abroad, setting up a foundation to boost African health and education alongside former US President Bill Clinton.
Peter Scott, chairman of Keppie Design, commented on the company's sponsorship of the award: "Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one of the world's best known architects, helped establish Keppie's international credentials during his working life, and today the practice continues to deliver its design and consultancy services throughout Scotland and beyond".
He continued: "Keppie recognise the importance of Scotland's reputation abroad in developing new business opportunities, so we are delighted to be sponsoring the Herald's International Scot of the Year award and bringing Scottish talent to the attention of the rest of the world".
The winners are to be announced at a gala dinner at Prestonfield Hotel in Edinburgh on November 15.
