Ernest Chausson's Concerto for violin, piano and strings - one of the most unusual pieces in the chamber music repertoire and one of its best-kept secrets - is in effect a violin concerto in which the soloist is accompanied not by an orchestra but by a piano quintet. Jonathan Morton, Scottish Ensemble artistic director, aims to bring the piece to a wider audience with his arrangement for violin, piano and string ensemble, which is tonight premiered in Glasgow before touring Scotland.
Also on the programme are two works by British twentieth-century composers: Gerald Finzi's beautiful Romance and William Walton's Sonata for Strings, an arrangement of his Second String Quartet for string ensemble.
The tour continues in Aberdeen and Perth next week: for details, see www.scottishensemble.co.uk
