Americana:
Southpaw
Sat Feb 10, 8pm,
The Tolbooth, Jail
Wynd, Stirling, £8, 01786 274 000.
They may be from Perth, but Southpaw's music is jostling for radio play and winning favourable comparisons with bands from more typical Americana hatcheries such as Austin, Texas. Together since 2001, these five seasoned players put their faith in the time-honoured values of strong songwriting and solid musicianship. Their self-released debut album, Buffalo Mansions, was picked up by Americana specialists Goldrush Records last year and with support from Radio 2's Bob Harris and Radio Scotland's Bryan Burnett, they're winning a growing following for their road-hardened rock and careworn country music.
World Music:
One World Peace Concert
Sat Feb 10, 6.30pm, Queen's Hall, Clerk Street, Edinburgh, £8, 0131 668 2019.
The Middle East Festival's One World Peace Concert has become firmly established as an annual event on Edinburgh's world music calendar and always presents a vivid and varied programme. This year's line-up promises traditional music, song, dance, poetry and theatre from Africa, Tibet, China, India and Israel. Look out especially for the high-octane West African rhythms of Edinburgh-based djembe troupe Waa Sylla, the mystical melodies of The International Sufi School of Khidmatul Khadim,
and the poetic expression of Iraqi oud player
Nafee Mohammed.
