Sermon on the mount part two
Posted by Michael Settle at 1:37pm on Fri 16 May 08
After all the brickbats the PM has had to sustain in recent weeks from chums like Prezza, Michael Levy and Lady Macbeth, it's nice to see someone has a good word for our noble leader. Step forward the falsetto voiced Robin Gibb, whom we learn, "likes" the PM. It might have something to do with the fact that the Iron Scot likes the BeeGees music. "He listens to our music every day," insists the Mancunian songster. This, of course, led hacks to wonder which BeeGees' tune was his favourite. It was a toss-up between "Tragedy" and "Stayin' Alive". I have to admit it was difficult keeping out of my mind the image of the medallioned PM strutting down Downing St in a chalk white suit. "I've never seen him in a white suit," said his spokesman. That, of course, is left to Martin Bell.

When getting on your high horse it's best to make sure your facts are spot on. So it was with a deal of alarm that I read a Daily Mail column which stated: "The family relations within Government are flagrant. The head of the Scottish Labour Party, Wendy Alexander, is married to Cabinet Minister Douglas Alexander." Hmm. Thankfully for the Alexanders I don't think either will be avid readers of the Daily Beast.

Tomorrow, the PM is on the Mound in Edinburgh. He will be hoping that his address to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland will get a better reception than Mrs Thatcher's did 20 years ago. If he doesn't, he should be very worried indeed. As a son of the manse, the PM will no doubt get the tone just right. Details of the speech are not out yet but it will be very serious - and personalised - stuff. Expect a number of biblical quotes and references.
