Stephen supports Post Office campaign
Nicol Stephen, the Scottish Liberal Democrat leader, was in Glasgow yesterday to show support for his party's campaign against post office closures in the area.
Scotland faces a cull of urban branches with the announcement last month of the planned closure of 44 post offices, half in Greater Glasgow. Of those, four are within a one-mile radius in the West End of the city. Among them is the "busy and profitable" Kelvindale branch, where Mr Stephen and other party politicians joined locals on a mile-and-a-half protest walk to the Anniesland branch, a proposed alternative if the closure went ahead. As he set off on the walk in the rain, across hilly terrain, Mr Stephen said: "We want to highlight how difficult it is for older people and those with disabilities, especially, on days like today to make this journey."
Mr Stephen said the Post Office had a duty to listen and reconsider its decision if convincing arguments were made to keep branches such as that in Kelvindale open.
Other west-end post offices threatened with closure include Crow Road, Dumbarton Road and Clarence Drive. Other members of the Scottish LibDems participating in yesterday's walk included Robert Brown, MSP for Glasgow, Mary Paris, local councillor, and Katy Gordon, parliamentary spokeswoman for Glasgow North.

[bold]I hope he cleared this with "puddles" Alexander first? We can't have any of that free thinking nonsense. That costs good money (usually 640,00 at last count)[/bold]

Ah, we can all sleep soundly in our beds tonight, Nicol Stephen is on the case.
Does anyone care what this Labour-loving nonentity does?

This is an article about 'Labour-loving' Nicol Stephen campaigning [bold]against[/bold] Labour and the post office closures that have been presided over by the UK Government.
When the Lib Dems went into government with Labour, the ants said they’d get into bed with anyone.
The Lib Dems show this isn’t true and the Nats brand them as labour-loving (sounds a bit like a racist slur). The fact is the Lib Dems do what they can to achieve what they believe is good for Scotland and to stop other party’s doing things they believe are bad. It’s how democracy is supposed to work.
Perhaps if Nicol Stephen were Labour loving he’d have gone for another coalition with Labour – after all combined the two parties have far more seats than the SNP.

Well said Robbie. the nats are just jealous that Nicol has proven himself to be a good leader now much to their disappointment and that the Lib Dems have more than one policy.

I agree the post office closures are wrong. but this single issue harldy makes him "ghandi" He probably asked wendy if it was ok, and she probably said no problem couldnt care less not a major issue.
[bold]DJ I fell of my seat laughing at your "jelous " response. Talk about delusions of grandeur..... LOL[/bold]
Notice how no one is really interested in "your titanic parties" Leadership election? Wonder why that is? Political irrelevance springs to mind as well as wooden spoons.

[/quote] Firstly Robbie, the accusation/fact of Stephen being Labour-loving was a general point, as I'm sure you were aware. If you think Stephen's actions in this particular minor case absolve him from this accusation then you're wrong.
As to your point about them not being in a coalition with Labour - since when? When a Labour figure pontificates on just about anything these days, you can't say knife before a Lib Dem spokesperson appears, bleating complete agreement with whatever Labour guff it happens to be.
Yon Lib Dem clown (I forget his name) who sided with Labour in the Foot and Mouth scandal recently was a good case in point.
You can say what you like but the plain and simple fact is that there apparently needs to be no formal coalition for you to be Labour's bitche$..
What beats me is what you think you will get out of it?
Because you won't, I'll tell you now. "Sit with the devil and learn his ways", but Labour will $hit on you nonetheless, mark my words.

In fact the Lib Dems do and say only what they think is good for the Lib Dems, even if they contradict each other in every speech.
Remember Willie Rennie getting elected in Dunfermline West by campaigning against the bridge tolls.... the policy of Lib Dem Transport Minister Tavish Scott MSP.
Remember the leaked memo from Robert Brown MSP on student grants and endowments?: "I think this is rather clumsy and distinctly unsatisfactory to have different levels in Scotland and in England. However, I think it will do the trick for us."

SNP noses out of joint because fib-dem nonentities did not form a coalition with them?? you ARE having a joke here , right Robbie!!
I agree with you on one point which is, Nicol Steven is an excellent leader for your party as he only lost one seat overall at the last elections which made you 4th in Scotland, at least the LIb-Dems in the UK can get 3rd place. Yes I agree N.S. is great leader........for the Scottish Lib-Dems at best, what a nonentity!!

glad to see the central issue of post office closures doesnt get in the way of party hostilities, lets hope the punters against closure can organise themselves without such party hacks and the apparently absent postwatch

Years ago my brother-in-law worked alongside Nicol Stephen in Fife. He told me that Nicol was the only one of the crew never to get his face, hands or overall dirty - quite a feat for a miner. Nicol used to complain a lot about the bridge tolls, so he travelled by car to work via the Kinkardine bridge and back via the Forth bridge (he was staying in digs at South Queensferry at the time).
He left that job a few years before the Seafield colliery closed and at some point joined the Liberal Democrats, so my brother-in-law lost touch with him. Recently the former employees decided to have a reunion and letters of invitation were sent out, including one to Nicol at LibDem headquarters. He didn't reply. I'm not saying that the Royal Mail was at fault here but it does make you think.

Ha Ha Nicol Stephen, who's he again? Oh aye he's that Labour guy who thinks he's in a different party.
I didn't realise he'd been a miner! Maybe he never got his overalls dirty cos he was the one lowered in a cage to test for poisonous gas
Mind you he wasn't much cop at that either, his leader Wendy emits plenty and he dosn't seem to notice..

Yes Robbie the Nats were really cut up when the LibDems had a fit of pique and decided to marginalise themselves by looking more unreasonable than Ian Paisley by rejecting non-conditional talks on coalition. Their perogative I know but not clever politics nor clever in being able to claim they have delivered anything.
In fact suicidal politics as they look even more like Labour reinforcements than they did in coalition. They had the benefit of the doubt in the first eight years since it was thought they would negotiate themselves across the floor into another coalition so they could cement the image of being the party of compromise and co-operative politics.
Now that's blown out the water as they vote with Labour almost 70% of the time. Also blown is any chance of being in Government again. If the Nats can run a minority government Labour are only going to do the same in future.
Result? The LibDems looking even more marginalised. They're losing any USP they have. Why vote LibDem when they vote Labour and why vote LibDem at all when they won't be in Government or like Tories making claim on delivering things.
If Nicol were really serious about post offices instead of playing lip service why hasn't he chosen that as a debate to bring to the Scottish Parlament?
Could it be because he would have to join with the SNP against the Labour party. That he hasn't tells its own story...

Does this mean one of the 'more powers' he wants is that over Post Offices?
If so how does he get those powers via his alliance with Labour and the Tories on a constitutional commission that has no agreed objective, no shared platform of what more powers it wants Scotland to have and would take years reaching any conclusion since it will just represent vested party political interests.
How many post offices would we have remaining to take responsibility for after that convoluted period?
