Glasgow East: Labour in final push
Labour mounted its final push in the Glasgow East by-election campaign today with a fighting speech from candidate Margaret Curran.
She delivered the speech standing on a box on a street corner outside a bingo hall in the heart of the constituency.
Ms Curran told applauding supporters: "A number of weeks ago I promised that the Labour fightback was about to start.
"The Labour fightback is under way and we are on our way."
After she finished, activists fanned out with the aim of knocking on 10,000 doors in the constituency where Labour is defending a majority of 13,507 and where voters give their verdict tomorrow.
Loss of what would normally be one of Labour's safest seats would be disastrous for the party and would raise questions over the future of Gordon Brown.
The party claimed to be aiming to have 200 activists in the constituency today, and 400 for polling day tomorrow.
In her stump speech, Ms Curran made no mention of her Nationalist rival John Mason,
But that aspect was dealt with in a statement issued on her behalf, saying: "The choice in this election could not be clearer - between someone who will use every waking hour to stand up and fight for them, or someone who is obsessed with breaking up the UK and will vote with the Tories.
"Again and again, local people are telling me they are fed-up with collusion between the SNP, the Tories and some sections of the media to bad-mouth this area."
In her speech, Ms Curran vowed to stand up for the area if elected.
"There have been big issues in this campaign," she said.
"We have made a lot of progress in the east end of Glasgow, and that has to be recognised.
"But there is still so much more work to do.
"I promise that if I am elected, that work will start on Friday morning.
"I promise I will stand up for the men, the women, the pensioners, the young people, and the working people of the east end of Glasgow."
She declared that Labour was succeeding in getting its message through to the public.
First Minister Alex Salmond, who has been campaigning in the constituency almost every day, raised the stakes yesterday by declaring the contest "a test of strength" between his government and Gordon Brown's.
| The Labour fightback is under way and we are on our way | | Margaret Curran |
|
But today Ms Curran insisted: "I get frustrated and a lot of people in the east end get frustrated that Alex Salmond just wants to talk about himself all the time.
"I don't agree with that kind of politics.
"I want to talk about the east end of Glasgow and if I get elected, that is what I will do."
Labour's campaign has focused heavily on Ms Curran, a Holyrood MSP, and any ministerial visits have been low profile.
Ms Curran insisted the campaign had gone well, saying: "There is a sense that people want the Labour Party on the front foot.
"They want us up and fighting and arguing for their agenda and taking issues forward.
"That's what I promised in this campaign, I think it has been good for us, good for the Scottish party, and good for the British party."
And in another dig at First Minister Salmond she said: "I think a lot of people would thank me if I got to wipe the smile off his face somewhat."
The SNP took to the streets for the last day of the campaign with candidate John Mason joined by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and comedienne Elaine C Smith.
The three visited a coffee morning at Garrowhill Bowling Club, where they chatted to voters ahead of tomorrow's poll.
And Mr Mason said their campaign had gone "tremendously well".
He said: "Labour seem to have been muddling along from day one, while I have had a tremendous team."
Mr Mason has served the east end of Glasgow - which is traditional Labour territory - for 10 years as a councillor.
And he said: "If I'm elected I will be the best MP for this area."
Mr Mason went on: "If I am elected it will send a message to Gordon Brown.
"There will still be a Labour Government, but it's a Labour Government that's not been listening to people.
"Now they are waking up to that and if we win this week they will have to wake up."
Ms Sturgeon, also the Nationalists' deputy leader, claimed there had been "significant movement" towards the SNP during the short by-election campaign.
"There's a real mood to send a message to Gordon Brown," she said.
"If the SNP win this by-election on Thursday it will send the strongest possible message to Gordon Brown.
"There's an opportunity for voters to put this area on the map and make their voices heard loudly and clearly."
Ms Sturgeon added: "We intend to win. Ultimately it is up to the voters who wins this seat but our support is strong, it is motivated, and it is growing by the day."
Lib Dem candidate Ian Robertson was out campaigning on local issues, focusing on a closure-threatened fire station.
Mr Robertson handed over a petition calling for Parkhead Fire Station in the east end to be saved by Glasgow City Council.
He said the Fire Brigades Union feared that closing the station could "endanger the lives of people across the east end".
And he said: "The voices of the hundreds who have signed the petition should be heard before any decision is made."
He continued: "I launched this campaign last week, calling on all parties to stand together to stand up for the east end in protecting this vital local service. I am still waiting for their support.
"This campaign will continue long after the by-election circus has left town and on the final day of the campaign they should do the right thing and join the campaign and sign the petition."
Meanwhile, Tory candidate Davena Rankin pledged that a vote for her would be a vote for "a positive change" and "a safe change".
Ms Rankin was out campaigning with Scottish Conservative leader Annabel Goldie.
The candidate said: "This has been a great campaign and I've enjoyed every moment. Throughout Glasgow East I've met more and more people turning to the Conservatives.
"These people are fed up with decades of Labour neglect but they don't want separatism.
"They recognise that a vote for me is a vote for a positive change, a safe change. I will be a tireless worker and a strong voice for Glasgow East, working with David Cameron to make sure the issues facing Glasgow East are tackled head-on."
Miss Goldie backed her and said: "In Davena Rankin we have an excellent candidate who will fight the Glasgow East corner with guts and passion."

Fightback? How can you "fight back" from being 13,500 in front? Labour's absolute terror of the electorate shouts from the rooftops.

This is a by election that the SNP have been claiming they would win (although they've started to backtrack a bit on that now, like a ferret stuck in reverse gear).
Hence the reference to fightback.

And so The Herald concludes its pre-election day coverage, as it started - strongly biased towards Labour. Balance would have been so much more encouraging. Do newspapers like The Herald and The Scotsman have a death-wish? Can they not see that in all fields there has been a move of Scottish opinion, and that they are behind the people - and not in a supportive sense. I am in business and I no longer get The Herald thanks to its politial datedness. If the people of Glasgow East elect an MP who does not live in the constituency and who is already an MSP, then I hope The Herald will be proud of its role. The rest of Scotland will see, via other media, the continuation of a trend away from Labour and towards brighter, better, more aspirational, and more honest, political parties.

Alex Salmond still behaves as if he is in opposition and needs to make blustering noises of impeding victory to gee-up his activists.
This may completely backfire here because any Labour majority will look like a victory and a majority over one thousand will look like a triumph.
Remember
Hamilton South - Labour Majority reduced from 15,000 to 500
Monklands East - Labour Majority reduced from 15,000 to 1,500
Paisley S (97) - Labour Majority reduced from 13,000 to 3,000
Glasgow Central - Labour Majority reduced from 17,000 to 6,000
No one remembers who came second.
Salmond is good at bluster, rabble-rousing and a bit of demagoguery but he is in danger of overblowing it here. His credibility needs a SNP victory, which was a tactical mistake.

Yes, let's just publish another Labour press release, uncritically and without either comment or balance.
Nice one.

Oh yes, but I note this seems to confirm that the Scotsman's claim of Labour fielding 2,000 activists was a typo.

Look closely at this, can you se a single policy issue highlighted?
Anything about Energy Bills, Fuel Duty perhaps, a denouncement of the 10% Income Tax Hike, maybe that Labour are committed to putting more Police on the Street despite the fact the abstained form such a decision in the Budget......
There is nothing apart from hollow empty rhetoric.
For a party originally formed to fight for better conditions for th working family, this is outrageous.
Many a lifelong labour supporter will be shaking their head to hear such non-committal words from Ms Curran

That is the New Labour way, deny defeat, even if it was a rout, pathetic!!!

"Labour's absolute terror of the electorate shouts from the rooftops."
Why must our message boards be full of bizarre metaphors like this? I mean, what the hell are you trying to say?
"I am in business and I no longer get The Herald thanks to its politial datedness."
So, you're "in business". And what exactly does this have with not buying The Herald (which you clearly read online anyway, thereby helping it generate ad revenue)?
Anyway, good luck to Curran. Labour are generally hopeless but I think she's decent - she'll stand up for her constituency.
Whereas Mason's obviously an odd fish and looks pretty lost.

That is an inescapable fact.
The SNP have a moral victory Now !
Winning would merely be icing on an already SNPs cake!
Labour had a 13,500 majority or thereabouts .
That has been wiped ,the only question is by how much !
England has already said they will NOT re elect LABOUR.
Labour were right about one thing !
THINGS CAN ONLKY GET BETTER NOW!
LABOUR cannot win They are finished.washed up, kaput, eradicated .
Brown faces removal if he loses this seat (so they said)
Personally I cant see what difference chainging the driver makes when the bus has already gone over the cliff!

I watched Politics now on ITV last night - and I have to say that I continue to be appalled by the negatice campaigning. For Margaret Curran to have harangued the SNP candidate about whether he was proud of the SNP performance in Government - why on earth he didn't simply reply - are you proud of your record in this constituency? are you proud of Mr Martin's legacy? To be honest, the whole programme was rubbish - focussed on issues that are Scottish parliamentary issues and not UK Westminster ones and allowed candidates to simply throw bricks at each other. What a wasted opportunity. Whar on earth was the point about student loans - when (a) it is a Scottish issue, (b) the numbers of people in the East of Glasgow who go on to complete University education are tiny - well below average - and the numbers that go into Glasgow, Edinburgh, St Andrews, etc University are infintisimal. The SNP candidate should have replied - this is not a Westminister issue, we can discuss it when Margaret Curran gives up her other job and causes a Scottish by election.
I am disappointed that no candidate put themselves forward on the basis of spending their constituency allowances IN the constituency, employing local people (which would have been one new business and 2 new jobs for the area right away).

If Curran wins, then she said she would step down as MSP which would then spark another by-election.
For the SNP, it might be more useful to win a seat off Labour in Hollyrood than in Westminster (end of the day it doesn't matter to the SNP if it's Labour or the Tories in Westminster, as long as the SNP keep gaining ground in Hollyrood).
Scots more traditionally vote Labour for Westminster to prevent the Tories from gaining any advantage, Hollyrood is a different story, potentially it would be easier for the SNP to win a by-election for a Hollyrood seat than a Westminster seat.
Labour need to win Glasgow East, no question, but winning that does not mean they're out of the woods by any means.

To lighten the mood a wee bit - the mention in the article about Curran standing on a box (soapbox in bygone days) reminds me of a joke of my old dad's about a left wing candidate ranting from a soapbox to a sparse audience at the Barras. Pointing at a Rolls Royce sweeping past on its way down London Road, he shouted, "See that rich parasite in his big fancy caur? Nae tram cars fur him. Well, when we get intae power, [bold]you'll[/bold] be riding in the Rolls, and [bold]he'll[/bold] be on the tram! An' he's probably on his way tae eat caviar in a swanky restaurant, nae queuin' up at the chip shoap fur him! Well, when we get intae power, [bold]you'll[/bold] a' be eatin' in the swanky restaurants, an' [bold]he'll[/bold] be queuin' up fur a fish supper!" At this point his diatribe was interrupted by a wee man in the crowd. "Excuse me Jimmy, but ah widnae thank ye fur a big swanky caur, ah prefer gauin' oan a tram, it's mair sociable, ye can talk tae people oan a tram. An' ye kin keep yer caviar an' yer swanky restaurants an' a'. Ah like ma fish an' chips ..." He got no further. The soapbox ranter leaned forward and pointing at the wee man, said, "Listen you, when we get intae power, you'll do as yer d*mn*d well tellt!"
Remind anyone of the [bold]Currant[/bold] Labour Party? If you'll excuse the pun.

[quote]Ms Curran told applauding supporters: "A number of weeks ago I promised that the Labour fightback was about to start.
In her stump speech, Ms Curran made no mention of her Nationalist rival John Mason, But that aspect was dealt with in a statement issued on her behalf, saying: "The choice in this election could not be clearer - between someone who will use every waking hour to stand up and fight for them, or someone who is obsessed with breaking up the UK and will vote with the Tories.
"Again and again, local people are telling me they are fed-up with collusion between the SNP, the Tories and some sections of the media to bad-mouth this area."
In her speech, Ms Curran vowed to stand up for the area if elected.
"There have been big issues in this campaign ," she said.
"We have made a lot of progress in the east end of Glasgow, and that has to be recognised.
"But there is still so much more work to do.
"I promise that if I am elected, that work will start on Friday morning.
"I promise I will stand up for the men, the women, the pensioners, the young people, and the working people of the east end of Glasgow."[/quote]

As a great number of former Labour voters now support the SNP, and the SNP has its roots imbedded in generations of pioneering work by dissenting socialists, it can be taken for granted voting SNP means voting for left-of-centre.
Indeed, every socialist voting SNP moves policies more to the left.
Evn so, it is impossible to argue an SNP government can do any less than create policies that mirror the will of the Scottish nation.

Antifa. Business: The Herald and The Scotsman are both in decline (job losses, editorial resignations, circulation falls). Their websites are busy enough but - do you pay anything to them for this? The ad revenue is very small, I can tell you. I'd much, much prefer these Scottish papers to succeed and thrive and grow. My point was that they are losing their core readers through lack of identity and reader alienation. There's nothing metaphorical about it. I simply think they are out of step and that is partly reflected in their steep decline. Political bias may be a tradition in newspapers - but Scottish circumstances and competition demand a different answer: fairness and balance. Throughout this election The Herald has been biased to Labour, it's that simple.

The debate on STV last night was shoddy. I thought I had got a local cable channel from the usa at first. It was put together in such a cheesey fashion and I could not take seriously from the start due too the involvement of anyone called Kelly Anne.......I was like a childs politics show.
Magrit Gurn was on usual form cackling and snorting away off camera and likewise on. It also looked surprisingly like she was being fed questions on an ear piece.
John Mason was rather flat and could not really get an opportunity to answer for being interupted by cackling and snorting.
I think Ian Robertson is in the wrong party, far too sensible to be a lib dem.

The choice is very clear regardless of which political Party you would normally vote for. You can vote Labour and see Glasgow East return to neglected anonymity (safely back in Labour's [italic]taken for granted[/italic] file), or vote SNP to see the Westminster Labour Govt and the SNP Scottish Govt fight each other tooth and nail to retain/win it back. Never will more be done to help the East end of Glasgow than if that scenario plays out.
Basically, the people of Glasgow East have been offered an open goal. It remains to be seen whether Labour have put them off enough for the opportunity to be missed.

The London Establishment media bias in Scotland is disgraceful. I’ve stopped buying all Scottish newspapers. I never read the free ‘Metro’ or ‘The Retard PM’ propaganda sheets, which illustrates the dire sales of regular papers hence the necessity of the giveaway.

Advertisers will continue to pull the financial plug because the circulations are in decline anyway and that has nothing to do with economic conditions!

Why isn't Curran being asked directly as to why he is not being inverstigated, it is a valid point to the electioneering, as it was his getting caught that caused the bye election in the first place.
Lets hope the Eastenders will see through the smokescreen.

The irony of this burnt out shell of a man won't be lost on people reading these boards.
Baffled's only quote to date is from an SNP enterprise minister in 2003..... for gawds sakes.....
Note how he refuses to get embroiled with any debate on Labour's current policies, instead he spreads his manure over the forum boards, muck spreading with absolutely no hard evidence.
Yet it was the SNP government, elected in May, that finally ended private sector involvement in the Scottish health service, after Scottish Labour put it there.
It was this MINORITY administration that has also:
[bold]Abolished Prescription Charges
Saved local A&E units
Backdated the NHS pay award
Abolished student fees
Cut class sizes
Begun an expanding pilot for free school meals
Equal Rights to the Children of Asylum Seekers
Rejecting New Nuclear Power Stations
Doubled the international aid budget
Ended ring-fencing of council spending
Continues to condemn the Iraq war.[/bold]
This "right-wing" party seems to have done more to further social democratic values in 14 months than Labour have managed in 11 years.
It's a pitiful state for a once great party to be in.
Curran is no saviour, just another journey women, proven to have failed to stand up for the residents of Glasgow East on numerous occasions.....
Most recently admitting that she should have 'StOOD UP FOR GLASGOW EAST' against the 100% increase in the lower tax bracket form Low Paid Workers.
As a result 5 Million of the UK's lowest paid workers are worse off and those above £25k are now paying less tax.

[bold][quote]A great number of former Labour voters now support the SNP.
The SNP has its roots in generations of pioneering work for Scotland created by dissenting socialists. Therefore, it can be taken for granted voting SNP means voting for left-of-centre.
Indeed, every socialist voting SNP moves policies more to the left.
Even so, it is impossible to argue an SNP government can do any less than create policies that mirror the will of the Scottish nation.
Vote for Scotland, NOT for Westminster![/quote][/bold]

Let's see, baffled is obviosuly a New Labou troll posting form their campaign office and to date has revealed these shokcing stories.
1. Connery doesn't live in Scotland, for atleast thirty years
2. Fergus may have worked for Winnie in 1980
3. Brian Souter is a financial backer of the SNP
4. Jim Mather think's Scotland will be a cenre-left country 2003
wow....
But Baffled hasn't commented on any Labour Policies
That's because Margaret Curran hasn't actually put anything forward other than say sorry for the balls up that brown's making of it....
If Curran shaded this, never will an election have been won on so little policy, never will have fear so crushed a people's aspiration and hunger for change.....

Maybe some of us don't want a left wing independent Scotland. How about sensible policies issue by issue? The problem with left wing governments is they're too ready to stuff money into the pockets of those who don't deserve it but who shout the loudest. At least Margaret Thatcher was her own person and beholden to nobody least of all pressure groups with their own axe to grind.
