Free travel scheme set to be extended
Scott Macnab
The Scottish Government said yesterday it will not be restricting the national free bus travel scheme for pensioners and plans to extend it to injured veterans.
Ministers had been under pressure from Labour over the issue amid claims of a "secret review" and concerns that the times of day and distance may be capped.
But the Scottish Government yesterday published the terms of a forthcoming review into the scheme.
And finance secretary John Swinney said: "Older and disabled people will continue to be able to travel for free throughout Scotland - at any time, on any bus routes for any number of journeys.
"It is important for the sake of vulnerable citizens across Scotland that baseless claims to the contrary are corrected."
A Scottish Government spokesman also confirmed that distance travelled will not be affected.
The scheme currently provides free bus travel to over-60s and the disabled.
The issue prompted a major row last month when former Labour leader Wendy Alexander, grilled Mr Salmond at First Minister Questions, raising concerns over the scheme's future.
Labour MSPs even lobbied outside Parliament sporting Alex Salmond stickers with the motto: "You cannae shove your granny off a bus."
Transport spokesman Des McNulty claimed yesterday's announcement was a political victory for the party.
"Labour put the SNP under weeks of sustained pressure to come clean on their review of concessionary travel," Mr McNulty said.
"After weeks of dodging the issue the Scottish Government has finally caved in."
The review was set in motion by the previous Labour/Lib Dem administration.
Mr Swinney added: "The concessionary fares scheme has been a widespread success, bringing free travel to elderly and disabled people across Scotland.
"We now want to look at how the scheme can be improved even further.
"For example, I want to ensure that eligibility is extended so that injured
veterans in Scotland are able to benefit from free bus travel."
The review is expected to be completed over the next six months, with any changes to the scheme being brought to Parliament in Spring 2009.

And wee Wendy "grilled" Alex:-)
The scheme was "tightened up" under the last Government, so people who had a bus pass [italic]then[/italic] , are turning up to get it renewed...and having to be refused by the harrassed frontline staff.
The Scottish Government said yesterday it will not be restricting the national free bus travel scheme for pensioners and plans to extend it to injured veterans.
That opening sentence sums up the Labour bias that has succumb this paper.
The restricting of pensioner free buss passes was never in ANY doubt except in the vivid swivel eyed machinations of wee Wendy's mind.
Indeed, it was the administration that she was part of that started the review in the first place!
Even better, JohNS winney has stated that not only are pensioners and disabled travel restrictions not in the considerations, what they are looking at is widening access to injured servicemen.
Des McNulty claims the announcement was a political victory for the party. This is Labour in opposition..... before anything is announced, they spread a scare story and when it is announced what the SNP were about to do, they claim it as a 'victory"
How inept and useless can an opposition get?
Hold on, Tavish & Iain Gray are on the horizon.
Brace yourself for the [bold]Year of the Yawn[/bold] .

Or more precisely -- this paper, and others like it, printed Labour propaganda as if it were fact. And made little issue that this "secret review" was one set up by the Labour/LibDem administration.
The issue prompted a major row last month...
...in your heads.
Labour MSPs even lobbied outside Parliament sporting Alex Salmond stickers with the motto: "You cannae shove your granny off a bus."
Labour MSPs used scaremongering tactics to garner votes from the less fortunate. Again.

After weeks the SNP has repeated the same facts it has repeated all along: that those currently eligible for free bus travel will continue to be eligible for the same service and that they were looking at extending eligibility. They have denied the stories designed to cause fear which grew out of Labour and has been (as always) trumpeted by Labour and Labour mouthpieces. Labour tactics of creating fear and then taking the credit for when the facts begin to present themselves is shameful.

Yes another SNP horror story scotched as being nothing more than the Unionist Press black spin.
Now tell me why the Herald sales and web blogs have dropped off the radar.
Yes, your allegiance to Big Broon and biased journalism is costing you dear.
Long live Douglas Fraser. He'll make your paper profitable before he fecks off to a paid sincecure with the at corporation they call the BBC.

Should we, as Cybernats, use words like "scotched"?
Or indeed welched.

I hope they put those stickers on expenses!
But seriously - it's when I read about stunts like this, and the top-hat carry-on at the last by-election, that I feel sick.
It's the thought that arseholes like these have been lording it over us for years.
Gombeen gobshites who don't give a toss about us, the people who give them status.
Southern-looking career politicians who should be ashamed of themselves for all the lies they've told, all the jobs they've destroyed or allowed to be destroyed.
Unionistas who've stolen the hope from generations of our children to bolster their imperial delusions, who use [italic]our kids[/italic] as cannon-fodder.
Thieving liars who think they're above the law, who all possess some imaginary 'moral compass'.
I like to think of myself as a peaceful man, but sometimes, just sometimes...

Fair enough, you can't get much more unforeseen than the shoe-in hack candidate doing a runner. Maybe he's one of the lucky few to get a copy of this Niall Walker book, looked himself up in the index and promptly scuttled off to Rio.
We can but hope.

Will the Lumpen Party think up more lying scares for the by election?
Or, will they refuse to put up a candidate, like their Yorkshire colleagues to save even more embarrasment?
Or, as is more likely, are their Glesga numpties too thick to be embarassed and run anyway, just to get the hidden expense fiddles they always incur.?

After 50 odd years of lying I see no change in voters intentions in this by-election.. I believe the best result (hopefully I'm wrong) the SNP will gain is a reduced majority for the Labour Party.
I fevervently believe the Glasgow Fair holiday will have more of a detremental effect on our SNP candidate than the others..
On your last point I suggest they all had a fistycuff to win the the right to be the L** bour candidate... to gain entry to pigs in the trough Westminster. No KO blow ..

puskas, you are right, sadly.
the holiday will have an effect, and it will be detrimental to the snp as their supporters are pro rata more ambitious than the giro generation that live hand to mouth on pension monies week in week out.
if zanu labour offer a free beer at the polling station then the labour vote would double in some booths, so thank heavens that they cannot offer that as an option!

Will take you to a page about Labour's bus pass lies, as demonstrated in the above story.
A nice feature from tinyurl I thought!

The British Government seems to have the attitude of 'None - or very little concern' for ‘any’ Military Personnel returning from battle - either healthy (or seemingly so"), injured or even 'Dead!' and appear to consider them mainly to be employees (classification Lackies!) under Contract doing a job for which they are paid (very little!) End of!
This attitude is made even worse when, considering the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan - which now seems, overwhelmingly, nothing more (to the Public and the Military involved!) - as Political Face Saving for the biggest Political clanger dropping of all time!
So, come on Mr Salmond, take the great opportunity of showing some 'real and meaningful concern for ‘all veterans 'from' Scotland’ - injured or not, and allow them 'free unrestricted' bus travel - and any other that can be 'arranged for their benefit! - for the rest of their life, if only to let them know, if only in this small way, that 'Scotland Cares!'
After all, if we can afford to have really fit and healthy politicians - and their accessories, flitting about 'all over the place', using means of transport of their choice - seemingly regardless of cost, and apparently, as well you yourself know, for short and somewhat fairly irrelevant journeys - covering very short and easily walkable distances which n doubt, in some cases, many Veterans would be extremely happy if they could manage such a hazardous and arduous task (to them!) under their own steam - but can’t!
Not only that think of the tremendous Political advantage for ‘Vote Catching’ although I would hope that any actions you take would be leaning towards more concern for those ‘Veterans!’ than your own Political standing!
Go On! Give it a Go! Now is the time - for all to benefit!
