Sports organisations across Scotland are to share in a £780,000 cash boost to encourage grass-roots participation as well as for nurturing tomorrow's stars.

In her first official engagement as the new head of sportscotland, Louise Martin joined Sports Minister Stewart Maxwell to announce the investment in sports facilities that they said will benefit communities across Scotland, including the renowned mountain bike facilities at Fort William.

They said the current downhill course often proves too difficult for the majority of keen mountain bikers. The existing track will now be complemented by a 2.8km intermediate downhill track, thanks to a £67,000 investment from sportscotland.

The new track will be more suited to recreational bikers and those wishing to develop their skills. Ms Martin said: "The investment in the new intermediate mountain bike track at Nevis Range will undoubtedly attract an increased number of bikers of all ages to the area, reinforcing Fort William and Lochaber as a hub for outdoor sports in Scotland."

Mr Maxwell said: "This substantial investment in Scottish sport will help support the development of quality facilities, at all levels, throughout the country. Projects from Shetland to Dumfries will benefit from a share of almost £800,000."

This is the biggest week of the cycling calendar for mountain biking in Scotland, when world-class riders will return to Fort William for the seventh successive year.

Well done the Scottish government. Wonder how many will be as critical of this as they were of the reorganisation.

“Sportscotland chief announces £780,000 grass roots investment”

When I read this headline I thought it was £780 million, believe me the £780,000 will not cover the expenses of managing sport across Scotland this year.
I have one project alone to provide training facilities in Scotland that needs £2.5 million.
You can not improve the participation in sport in Scotland with the current facilities.
Check out the medal winners for Scotland at the Melbourne Games, how many actually were resident in Scotland and did their training here with the current facilities?

In 6 years time Glasgow and Scotland will host the Commonwealth Games, at this point in time just as in the “Edinburgh farce” trying to do it on the cheap will not provide facilities never mind grass roots facilities.

The fact that the 2012 Olympics’ costs are running at £9.5 billion and rising should not be lost on any tax payer. These Olympic Games are draining £150 million from Scotland that should have been used to provide the much needed grass roots facilities.

As the oil revenue from Scotland’s natural resources are being used to clean up the east of London; and to provide grand stands in London there will be no grass roots facilities either in London or Scotland.

They wear helmets in press photographs to protect their heads from injury sustained by hitting the top of the picture.
