MPs lose fight for expenses to stay secret
Pressure on Michael Martin, the Commons Speaker, intensified last night after the House authorities lost their High Court battle to stop the disclosure of MPs' expenses.
Back benchers condemned the Commons move led by the Glasgow MP as a waste of taxpayers' money - possibly as much as £100,000 - with one MP calling on the Speaker to set a date for stepping down.
"He now needs to set a timetable for his departure," declared Douglas Carswell, Conservative MP for Harwich, adding: "In the age of Google, what MPs spend public money on should be posted online. We don't need any more shifty attempts to maintain the gentlemen's club system."
David Winnick, Labour MP for Walsall North, condemned the appeal as a "near farce".
The TaxPayers' Alliance welcomed the ruling, which has followed a three-year battle to get full disclosure of MPs' expenses. Matthew Taylor, its Chief Executive, said: "This is a victory for taxpayers and democracy in Britain."
He added: "It's a shame the Speaker has wasted so much of our money trying to keep this information secret. When he should have been improving the standing of Parliament, he has instead brought it into
even greater disrepute."
The ruling was also a victory for Heather Brooke, the freedom of information campaigner, who said: "This ruling will wrest control from the
old boys' club and put it back where it belongs - with the constituents."
At Westminster, Gordon Brown's spokesman said the Prime Minister was "relaxed" about the publication of his own expense details but stressed "this is a matter for
the House authorities".
They had challenged the Information Tribunal's "unlawfully intrusive" demand that a detailed breakdown of MPs' Additional Costs Allowances must be provided under the Freedom of Information Act. The ACA of up to £23,000 a year covers spending for when members are away from home on parliamentary duties. These include running a second home in London and paying for general household bills.
They have come under criticism in recent months following publication of the "John Lewis list" of household items MPs can purchase under their ACA. The list includes £10,000 kitchens and £6000 bathrooms.
However, three judges concluded they could not interfere with the tribunal's decision and dismissed the challenge.
The tribunal ruled in February that Commons authorities must provide a detailed breakdown of the ACAs of 14 named MPs, including Mr Brown, David Cameron, the Conservative leader, and Sir Menzies Campbell, the former Liberal Democrat leader.
Nigel Giffin, QC, appearing for the Commons authorities, argued that the tribunal's decision - requiring breakdowns to include receipts and addresses of properties bought - meant there would be "a substantial unlawful intrusion" into the lives of MPs and their families, which could threaten their security at the hands of the "mad and bad".
However, the judges said: "The expenditure of public money through the payment of MPs' salaries and allowances is a matter of direct and reasonable interest to taxpayers."
Last night, a spokeswoman for the Commons Members Estimate Committee, chaired by Mr Martin, which challenged the tribunal's ruling, said no decision had been made whether to appeal against the judges' ruling.
The committee will meet next week and has until noon on Tuesday to appeal, if it does not then it must publish details of the MPs' expenses by Friday.

It would appear that the picture in the Politics listing features Heather Brooke's (ahem) ample charms a bit more than let's say her facial features. Freudian slip or cropping error?!
As regards the expenses situation, it may be of very great interest what our elected members spend that very generous allowance on. However if the ceiling on this is not reduced, then our MPs will no doubt shamelessly continue to spend and spend and spend with no shame like they do with the rest of tax revenues, especially on Broon's side of the House.

What a state of affairs this is , those elected to protect the rights of the public use public money to protect themselves.
Michael Martin backed by most MPs has already drafted an escape route, they will now put forward a Bill that increases their wages by £35,000 .
This will enhance the fat pension they get when they retire ,or get booted out.
When they get this rise they will only be giving up the ACA allowance, traveling expenses and staff costs will not be affected and will rise as and when MPs see fit.
Write to your MP let them know that you are watching how they vote on this issue.

When a man spends his own money to buy something for someone else, he is still very careful about how much he spends, but somewhat less what he spends it on.

Too put it it bluntly I wouldn't trust a labour politician as far as I could through them especially after Wendy Alexander by her own admission ( they'll be telling us next it was like the Dallas script of decades ago, that we all dreamt Wendy's incrimination's) she admitted that she criminally accepted illegal donations. so that makes without any dubiety, the electoral commission and the procurator in that case equally criminal, and in the passage of time this should not be forgotten and justice should be dispensed to those very people for using the law illegally. Michael Martin and his greedy family should be thrown, in one of the many stinking dungeons that still exist in Scotland, as many a person throughout the ages have suffered that and much more for absolutely nothing, scumballs is too good a name for them.

The SNP should challenge MM's seat. Convention needs not to apply after so much disregard for taxpayer interests and so much self-preservation. And to add insult to injury they use our own money to fight us. Unbelievable. Go SNP and throw the $%^&*() " Socialist" out.

Gorbals Mick and the rest of the New labour Sleaze and Corruption Party should remember that they are, in fact, our employees. We, the taxpayers pay their wages, as well as all the money they manage to con out of us for their so-called expenses.
That man using our money to try and prevent us, the employers, from finding out just how much money they are stealing from us is a total and utter disgrace.
I, for one, am sick to death of forking out a fortune to pay for things like taxi fares for their wives to go shopping; paying for their utility bills; paying for their television licences; paying for make-up; paying for them to profiteer on second house - even when in some cases, the second house they are claiming for is provided by us, the taxpayer, free gratis and for nothing; and paying for the many other irrelevancies they steal our money for.
Our MP's are liars, charlatans and thieves, and are freeloading on the public. They are already paid far too much for all the good they do, and their large and protected pension scheme is little other than a rip-off of our money.
The sooner Scotland is independent, the sooner we can stop subsidising these freeloaders in Westminster.

Well done Heather Brooke for taking on and beating the sleazy greedy chancers that pass as politicians.
They set a fine example with their excessive and no doubt illegal claims, not to mention their support of illegal wars under the banner known as the union flag eh?

Now that it has been announced that local authorities are not going to advertise in our "quality" news papers I wonder if the standard of reporting will be more like the truth? Is the same ban about to be announced by the Scottish Government ?

Assuming that the reports concerning Michael Martin MP - and others are true, regarding the expenses claims they have falsely made, apparently year on year - especially Martin and his reported 'non-existent' Mortgage, by any stretch of ones imagination must they must have heavily involved massive collusion with others to have been so successful!
A thorough investigation, prosecuting as appropriate - regardless of alleged 'status' and imprisonment where applicable, must take place urgently!
How this crazy Government we are currently suffering under can bother to make such a song and dance about some / any members of the Public they classify as ‘Benefit Cheats’ - while all this is going on right under their noses, and being ‘allegedly’ fully authorized as all within the rules - is beyond belief!!
With regard to another shameful and disgraceful situation, whereby this crowd of seemingly blatant 'fiddlers' - purely for personal financial gain, can take the liberty of using taxpayers funds to legally try and defend their actions is qute shameful! Although Martin, with his activity and behaviour seems to attract many of the Political set to say 'he should go', it seems absolutely preposterous that him 'going' for wrongdoing - or whatever, rests entirely upon the fact of him being in agreement with the request.
No person - no matter who, and especially when accused of such wrongdoing, as has been reported, should never be in a position to be the deciding factor in their future of remaining in the job - when they have abused their position!
It is even amazing, in view of what it's all about, that Martin, with the accusations made particularly against him, should be allowed to be sitting in - never-mind 'in charge' of the handling of the affair, although it would seem that what he may have to protect - from the reports published, it is very, very understandable he has an ambitious desire to be ' in there' for his own protection, probably above everything else!!'
For such an easy 'arrangement' seemingly made and organised to allow 'Personal Financial' gain, as it seems to be, and nothing else, it appears that all the authorities that ' could, and should have' stopped this raising its nasty little head' must be sitting very comfortably in the pockets of their Political associates - even now!
What a shambles of Government we are experiencing under this New Labour, which seems entirely without any sense of direction for the job in hand, and seem mainly concerned, with their greatest effort to date of - ‘Making Hay while the Sun shines - and even when it don’t!’

Mario - so who would you prefer to be governing Scotland, in place of the "SNP headline seeking populist idiots" you so obviously hate? Surely not the kiddy-on socialist, U-Bendy Wendy and her catcalling mob in the Holyrood parliament?
Or maybe you're praying for another Tory UK government, to finish Thatcher's legacy of turning Scotland into an industrial wasteland, and implement her plans to use it as a convenient dumping ground for nuclear waste?
If you regard Alex Salmond as moronic and smug, what is your opinion of the likes of Tory toffs Cameron and Johnston? Or the odious, creepy McChattering Cairns and his thuggish boss Two Jobbies Browne? Some choices there among that ragman's roll of unionist second raters, eh?

Are schoolboys running the Herald now?

By the way please stop posting off topic comments on football etc on this thread. I know these matters are worthy of comment but there are other forums and threads where they can be discussed. I suspect some of these threads may be posted by the sycophants who support Gorbals Mick and his crowd desperately trying to change the subject. Same goes for the Unionist/Independent debate. Keep them for other forums the issue here is dishonest MP's of whatever persuassion! Pile it on and keep the real target in view.

I agree with your views on useless ex-Strathclyde cooncillors. However, I can see you have been away in SA for a while. You seem to have missed the election of an apparently competent government in Scotland which does not fit your description.
I think some of the useless numpties to which you refer to are now enjoying mining a rich seam of expenses at Westminster.
