Cleared for take-off… but relaunch fails to take flight
It was a Queen's speech without the Queen and, to be honest, it would have been a smidgen more exciting had Her Majesty been there. The much-vaunted draft legislative programme was meant to put Gordon Brown on the runway to a relaunch, but outside the confines of Westminster it is difficult to see how this bird could fly.
Mr Brown said he wanted to help first-time home buyers, start a savings scheme for the low-paid and give flexible working rights to parents.
All worthy aims, but there were no radical ideas in the mix and a fair number were, like Alistair Darling's last budget, lifted from opposition policy documents.
"Karaoke Conservatism" is what the Tories are calling it, accusing Mr Brown of singing from their song sheet. The Tories counted 12 ideas in 18 bills that were theirs first. The LibDems said he had "scraped the barrel", the SNP saw the cupboard was bare.
And the big ideas are not fuelled for take-off. On one key policy, £300m to help people on to the housing ladder, the Prime Minister gave the impression this was new money but in fact it comes from funds already allocated to the Department for Communities and Local Government.
This we discovered through some Scottish reverse engineering. If there were new money then some would probably come to Scotland too, a Barnett consequential, but there is not.
Similarly the Saving Gateway accounts, to encourage low earners to save, speaks
of "matched" funding from
the government which,
most assume, means equal amounts. It transpires a number of pilot schemes, adding various percentages to savers' funds, are being tested before one is chosen.
This all has shades of Mr Brown announcing a couple of thousand troops coming home from Iraq last year when they were already here, or a bit like Alistair Darling's £120 giveaway one day being soaked up by a 3% inflation level the next.
What really electrified politics yesterday, sending fear coursing along Downing Street and a shudder through the nation, was the Governor of the Bank of England's recession warnings. The Chancellor and Mr Brown are relying on the economy to come good before an election so they can claim to be safe hands during the storm.
Mr Brown insisted "there is no lack of clarity about direction" but he is likely to be pulled hither and thither by his shipmates on the way to an election, especially if Crewe and Nantwich goes Tory.
Labour MPs were a little happier with the 10p tax row defused, but drowning men will clutch at anything. Some 1.1 million of the lowest-paid workers, earning up to £13,000, will still be worse off, some of them by £230 a year.
Wiser Labour heads realise the damage inflicted on the government will not be undone in a two-day parliamentary flourish. One Labour MP in the corridor said: "When you're
in a boat that's sinking you don't just start rowing faster, first you stop to fix the hole and we've started on that work now."
Even if Labour manage to patch the hull there's a lot of choppy water between here and the electoral shore.

however before i go i would say that although
Mr Brown insisted "there is no lack of clarity about direction
what we have found in scotland is there a lack of direction about the clarity of the labour partys policy on a referendum.
(no where is this more obvious than at the glasgow herald) wendy alexanders mouthpeice) the herald have obviosuly been got at by her.

[bold]Get Real Gordon[/bold]
You said you knew what the REAL issues were, that you were in touch with the feelings of the people, that you had made mistakes but had learned from them.
So what was all the flowery language with no substance about?
You know what the real issues are:-
- Huge increases in utility bills (making huge profits)
- Huge increases in fuel (making more huge profits and extra tax!)
- Huge increases in food prices
- High mortgage rates (with little effect from the Bank of England)
You are not even beginning to tackle these issues. You try to 'sweeten' millions of people with a miniscule tax break, financed on credit, which the people will eventually have to pay back. Your policies are ineffective and your leadership is ineffective. You and your protege are an embarrassment to Scotland.
AND THAT DOESN'T EVEN TOUCH ON THE CONTEMPT YOU'VE SHOWN THE PEOPLE OF SCOTLAND WITH YOUR VEILED THREATS AND YOUR 'BRITISHNESS' AGENDA. YOU ARE A DISGRACE.
[bold]Stand down now or call a General election.[/bold]

From Dougies article that we're not allowed to comment on.
"Labour health spokeswoman Margaret Curran argued there has been "a fundamental retreat from the poverty agenda,"
That means the SNP must be winning the war against poverty much to the angst of the liebour party who deliberately kept great swathes of the populace trampled down in their belief that poverty equals votes.
I remember Helen Liddle saying at the Aberdeen south by election "People don't tend to vote for Labour if they're happy" which explains why Margaret Currant and her rag bag of anti Scottish colleagues are seething at the SNP for implementing their plans to eradicate poverty.
BTW Doug. Is part of Gogs the ditherer's plans to "do all it takes" to keep his butt on the wasteminster gravy train to censor the press as we are shamefully seeing in this once great paper.

Another thing, Doug.
I would imagine that the people who pay you for advertising browse this paper and it's comment pages.
I don't think they will be too chuffed that that circulation is plummeting and the people whom they are targeting with their ads are voting with their keyboards and deserting you.

LABOUR U-TURN ON FREE CARE FUNDING

[italic]What a disgrace![/italic]
A fortnight ago, Labour said it accepted all the recommendations in Lord Sutherland's follow-up report looking at how free personal care for the elderly was working six years after its inception. One of these recommendations was to urge Westminster to return the money, which would have covered 75% of the current annual shortfall in the system.
Labour's shadow health secretary, Margaret Curran said: "Scotland's interests are best served through constructive engagement with the Westminster government rather than narrow-minded disputes."
Oh Dear........

I am also giving up on the Herald, it isnot worth it without having comments. I will check every week or two but will move to the Scotsman, even though it is poor it does allow comments, which are essential nowadays to get the full picture.
Very stupid editorial move by Herald and sure to lose them readers big time.

Douglas Fraser and Alf Young had lost all credibility prior to this comments blackout, this is simply confirmation that these two are destroying the papers credibility as well.
Frasers recent offerings have been ripped to pieces by online comments, it just doesn't stand up toscrutiny, so the scrutiny and criticism must be silenced...........d
oesn't say much for the strength of his arguments.
Oh, he even wheels out Arthur Midwinter in his Salmond piece today.

Stifling debate will only encourage speculation of the worse kind, that a) they have something to hide. b)have an agenda, or c) obeying instructions from outside source. Not of which will help the paper's reputation.

Deja Vu?
[quote]Fareweel to a' our Scottish fame,
Fareweel our ancient glory!
Fareweel ev'n to the Scottish name.
Sae famed in martial story!
Now Sark rins over Salway sands,
An' Tweed rins to the ocean,
To mark where England's province stands --
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
What force or guile could not subdue
Thro' many warlike ages
Is wrought now by a coward few
For hireling traitor's wages.
The English steel we could disdain,
Secure in valour's station;
But English gold has been our bane --
Such a parcel of rogues in a nation!
O, would, or I had seen the day
That Treason thus could sell us,
My auld grey head had lien in clay
Wi' Bruce and loyal Wallace!
But pith and power, till my last hour
I'll mak this declaration :-
'We're bought and sold for English gold'--

As many have indicated above, any claim by the "Weegie" to be Scotland's Quality Newspaper will have to be matched by raising your journalistic standards to above that of One party State Strathclyde's politicians.
U bendy(aka puddles) is a laughing stock and this "papers" defence of her drags this publication into the same gutter.
You cannot defend the indefensible,(as Malcolm Chisholm has recently found out). This publication is no different.
Print news and report facts and you will be classified as a newspaper.
Print the same guff as the Hootsmon and the Daily Retard and you will be classified as a bog roll,(with the sh you know what already deposited).
You ain't much of a journalist if you have to lie to earn a crust of bread!

Then ye get FMQs where Alex Salmond wipes the floor with the pretenders and charlatans.

Everyone in the Labour party knows that if Labour loses Crewe & Nantwich Gordon Brown will be dumped. Since this is what the most Labour voters now want they may decide to stay at home in this by-election to force Labour MPs into decisive action.

I noted the comment by John Curtice on radio last night about Gordon Brown presenting his 18 bills and lots of initiatives to Parliament yesterday and coming over really badly, whilst Alex Salmond presented hardly any bills and precious few initiatives but came over quite well. One feverish, sweaty and eager to please and the other calm, organised and sensible.Amazing what a little ambience can do!
You could say that Mr Salmond's style was quite presidential, but I'm not too sure that is the word that should be used,or was intended.

Bill, Bill, some of us regular pro independence bloggers get that Unionists like you have little if any positive arguments for the Union apart from its done us for 300 years.
The evidence of the lies that Westminster have spun for all this period are coming to light and the whole Unionist pack of cards is falling with every disclosure.
GERS says tax income from oil and gas from Scottish sector = £11 billion; Oil Industry spokesman says 2008-9 tax income will be in excess of £23 billion.
Independent review of Unionist policy on attendance allowance as part of the Scottish Block Grant says Gordon was wrong to remove it.
Unionists say an SNP Government in Scotland would mean a £5,000 increase in tax bill for all Scots - reality of LIT is the majority of Scots will be better off.
Unionists say 'bring it on' then scuttle back under their stones when it is clear the tactic is an own goal.
Unionists say the SNP will cause multinationals to leave Scotland, reality: Barclays have moved into Glasgow big style and the Scottish economy is out performing the rest of the UK for the first time in 300 years.
Unionist Government makes the poorest in Scotland poorer, has a fuel tax regime that penalises remote and rural communities, a car tax regime that penalises poorest families or those who actually need 4x4's for daily life in remote and rural areas.
A unionist government and parliament that is out of touch with 33% of its land mass and the people's needs, so much so that one of its representatives said, "They do not give a F*** about Scotland unless they are at risk of loosing a general election."
So what does this quality national daily do? It fills up its web site with pap about unlucky Rangers - they were stuffed - and other pap fluffy kitten stuff rather than deal with what is actually happening in Scotland .
Labpoor have lost the plot, falling to bits, borrowing money to try and cover their butts(which we, the tax payers, will pay for), leaders in both parliaments are now a sad joke and clinging on to power by default.
So covering all this up, Bill, and preventing comment on the more asinine 'there is nothing really wrong with Labpoor and the Union' puff is good journalism, quality reporting and a service to democracy?
Now revisit your comment and justify it Bill, with reasons in writing why the Union is worth the price Scotland pays for it - sentiment will not wash.

Looking at the circulation figures you are going down the pan anyway, that's what happens when you are not producing a paper for a readership! It leaves, hope the abour party rallies round you cause now though..as if!

This from BBC website – rather different to the pro-Rangers guff on The Herald site.
Uefa violence 'stretches' police
Police in Manchester who came under violent attack from Rangers fans in the city for the Uefa Cup final admitted they were "stretched" by events.
Assistant Chief Constable Justine Curran said the influx of 150,000 Scottish fans was "unprecendented".
She said officers came under attack and riot police were deployed after a city centre big screen failed, adding: "I had 15 officers injured last night."

I too felt a pang of disappointment at the lack of substance in Alex Salmond's speech.
Hopefully he was keeping his plans close to his chest and his powder dry because with Westminster in melt down he's unlikely to have the same oppurtunity as the next two years will bring.
One frightening thing the debacle's of the last few months have exposed. Is the utter incompetence of the Labour MSP's.
It may go down in history as the rout of the imbecile's.

Alex Salmond doesn't need to make the announcements the beleagured labour leader brown, or his sheep-like westminster cohorts and their baaaaa-ing minion counterparts in Holyrood are heavily dependent upon.
The success of the Scottish Government is obvious, the shambles of the westminster Government and Labour as a whole are equally obvious, and Douglas fraser can make up what he likes, nobody is convinced, even the dwindling Labour supporters are bewildered at the Labour party in meltdown, and to barely comment on it is laughable.
Not only does the head in the sand attitude make me laugh but also more determined to campaign for the SNP and Independence as the next few years go by.
I don't want amateur journalists or amateur politicians having any kind of free reign, and will buy the herald for now and continue to comment on the herald forum and the articles, regardless of whether they are reflective of what is actually happening in Scotland.

The interesting things about the censored articles is they all have an anti Wee Eck slant. Take the 'no substance' speech line - why should Wee Eck re-iterate what is laid out in the SNP manifesto when we can read it if we want to.
What did Gordonovitch's new five year plan speech actually say apart from we are borrowing money (at the tax payers expense) to cover up our big mistake over the 10% tax band removal.
I suppose Nicol Stevens is an expert on broken promises given his time in coalition with Labour at Holyrood but the real result is the failure of the Unionist cabal to break more of Wee Eck's promises like the ' We will never allow the SNP budget through' for starters or how about 'LIT will never get off the ground' or 'The SNP will never hold their referendum.' Then there is today's embarrassment for Labour in Holyrood over the apparently incorrect decision of Gordonovitch's to take Attendance Allowance out of the Scottish Block Grant .
Nope, the Herald leads with rioting West End neds demonstrating how Scotland would fall to bits without the Union, forgetting that Rangers are a Unionist supporting club from their Chairman down.

On the help for first-time buyers issue I would say he is doing absolutely nothing to help them. If he wants to really help them he'll stop taking measures to try and sustain house prices at their current level and will let the market correct itself. If I was buying I'd much rather house prices dropped by 10-20% (thus costing me at least £10k less to buy) than have shared equity schemes which do nothing to make the overall property more affordable.
On the real topic of the day, and the preceding few days, I'm considering not bothering coming back to this site too. The Scottish political scene is what I'm interested in. Aside from all the pathetic bickering and name-calling from both sides, I find some of the posts quite informative and putting a different slant on things. If that isn't going to be available then I don't think it's worht visiting the site.
To suspend comments with no reason given smacks of big brother. I'm not one for conspiracy theories but you've got to wonder when the only subject barred from comment is Scottish politics.

Labour MSPs had a field day with Diminutive's empty speech but to be fair to the man, what could he offe ?. He has only managed to win one policy vote in chamber and that with the help of his "blue" friends so that from then on the Nats have been dubbed by all as [bold]TARTAN TORIES[/bold], so how could the man who joined the M/c throng promise anything of substance ?
On latter occasion, wonder what he and all the other [bold]TARTAN TORIES[/bold] thought of the massive display of Union Jacks, St G and Ulster flags ?
One of D's supporters was on this site yesterday wishing ''gers well. Hope he/she also enjoyed the flag-waving Unionists !

I dont post very often on here but I read a lot, probably every day.
I find the comments section often as informative if not more so than the articles themselves.
Not really in to a lot of the name calling but you expect that on a forum anyway.
Getting pretty tired of the blatant censorship on here though, I too think I'm going to give up. Hope your activity stats start plummeting.

A couple of weeks ago they sent me an e-mail questionair on what I thought of their site and also the Sunday edition.
I dare say I wasn't alone in reciving this e-mail, so I am wondering if the site is closed, while changes are made.
But if this is the case, please Herald let us know, you are a Newspaper after all, so even if the Herald is the news --- LET US KNOW

My information is that they have been warned about the personal attacks and lies that have passed as 'comment' recently. There has also been personal attacks made against employees of the Herald. What reasonable employer would allow their employees to be attacked by anonymous contributors on a website owned by the employer?
If your employer set up an internet message board which allowed anonymous people to cast aspersions on your honesty and integrity would you be pleased?
Accusations of corruption are thrown far too lightly on this site. We are all paying for the less restrained contributors worst excesses.
