Wendy haunts PM’s House as referendum heat turned up
"Bring it on!" went the Conservative cry and so Gordy, revived if not resuscitated after his 10p tax refund/bribe, did his best to oblige - bellowing and jabbing his finger at the shiny-faced Tory toff.
Spied in the corner VIP seats was the carpet-topped old master performer himself, "Sir" Bruce Forsyth - moustache twitching and his inner voice shouting, "higher, higher, lower, lower" as the dispatch box blows hit or missed.
The first to turn the heat on the PM was Calamity Clegg. Legs akimbo, he could barely contain himself over the 10p tax "charade", raging it still left one million of the poorest people out of pocket. As he jumped up and began jabbing his own digit energetically at Gordy, shrieking at his betrayal of the poor, Labour's imaginary handbags came out with MPs, sitting to attention and emitting a loud ironic: "Oooooh!"
For once, the comrades sat contented, wallowing in the socialist afterglow of his Britannic Majesty's largess to not five million but 22 million voters, poor and otherwise.
To Tory hurrahs, Dave pointed out how the public had just coughed up £2.7bn to keep the PM in his job and the least he could do was to give straight answers to questions. So he tried the Wendy question (good luck). Mr C pointed out how last week Gordy had insisted Bendy had NOT called for an early referendum on Scottish independence. "Will he now admit that she was calling for an early referendum and on this one issue they simply don't agree?"
Gordy clicked into obfuscation mode, declaring there was "no plan" for early legislation for a referendum in Scotland at Westminster or Holyrood. He then insisted the Tories were reneging on their solemn Unionist duty to kick the nasty Nats where it hurts, yet instead were descending into "petty point scoring". Surely not.
To more Tory cheers, Dave insisted it was Labour putting the Union at risk by "playing games" at a time when Bendy and Gordy were the "two most unpopular politicians on the planet".
The PM, however, geed up his colleagues by declaring how the Tory toff was all trousers and no substance.
Yet post-PMQs, with the great entertainer still goggle-eyed, there was time for
a Brucey bonus. After
Gordy had delivered his microwaved Queen's Speech, Dave quoted Communities Secretary Hazel Blears, saying: "This is The Apprentice meets Maria meets Strictly Come Dancing." By now, Brucey's moustache was twitching frenetically.
Mr C added: "I've got a better idea for the Prime Minister. Why not take part in a reality show that involves the whole of the country: it's called a General Election. Wouldn't it give everyone the chance to stand up in front of the Prime Minister and say, You're fired?' " Brucey's eyes widened. Good game, good game.

Unionists tearing the Union apart with the SNP looking on in disbelief. I could get sick of popcorn watching it unfold.

I'm thinking relatively long-term enjoyment (3-4 years) whereby it may be necessary to switch to other nibbles. Those fridge raider things or jars of pickled assortments. Beverages are a different kettle of fish - I'll save the best till last.

Hey how come we're allowed to comment on this article and not on the main Douglas Fraser story (a poor wound-licking attempt to pooh pooh Alex Salmond's speech)?
I like the Herald Online a lot (in fact only buy the paper edition for the property section on Wednesday now), main reason being the very refreshing, oxygenated combat-banter on the comments sections, and it really bugs me the way they've started de-balling certain stories by pulling the comments.
Consider me bugged.

Scottish Labour talking for themselves is a joke! According to the Herald they SLAB will oppose asking Westminster for our hard earned cash back for the health service.
Yes Scottish Labour we can see your true colours and I can see a rainbow and a chameleon.
The public can not trust you and they don't believe you, work from this platform to do your next re launch then you may start to make progress.

Well you managed it!
I have spoken out for the last few days against the censorship of the Herald on comments relating to Scottish Political stories but your incredibly biased story relating to Alex Salmond speech in the Scottish Parliament was the last straw. You will find the story easily, it is yet another "story" incredibly biased against the SNP which readers are not allowed to comment on.
Later today I will phone my newsagent and cancel my daily Glasgow Herald which I have purchased every day for the last forty years.
Well done the Editor, you must be very proud of what you achieved.

What behaviour from Margaret Curran and yon LibDem. If that's the best these unionist parties have to represent them I have worries about the quality of our policians when we're independent. Hopefully far more able and intelligent people will come out of the woodwork then and start a socialist party which can be respected.

Fraser's scurrilous article is just a rehash of his biased anti-Salmond comments on Holyrood Live, immediately after Alex Salmond's policy speech. Mind you, he did also mention that U-Bendy and North British Broon had both had "a bad week". But he could hardly have done otherwise, considering everyone and their cat was aware of that, unless they had been holidaying on the moon!
Like you, Judge, I have also stopped buying the Herald, and will not buy it again until I see from its online edition that its political articles are commenting fairly and with no particular party bias, left or right. I want a newspaper to give me facts, not propaganda.

Watched and heard the spectacle of Margaret Curran on last nights Newsnight Scotland behaving like some demented outpatient from a psychiatric hospital! I really think this woman has a problem. Her continual outbursts were an embaressment to Scotland, never mind the Labour party!
I understand from the programe that she was also 'named' earlier in the day in Holyrood for her outburts and barracking
Not sure how she got elected, if this is an example of the people of Baillieston, god help us!

The real problem with Margaret Curran and many of her ilk in the New Labour regime is that they are completely blinded by their venomous, spitting blood hatred of the SNP that they simply cannot function as normal human beings and show themselves up as immature, tantrum ridden children and our country should no longer tolerate parties who degrade Scottish politics in this way and rid ourselves of this regime for good!!!

I hope people are doing the same as me. Every time we're blocked from commenting on a political story I send an email to the Editor, the Webeditor and the Newsdesk. I've never, ever had a reply, but at least they will know they are not getting away with it without protest.
That's a major story we're not allowed to comment on: Wendy's u-turn on Care Funding, and the Herald's attempt to bury the story.
The question was asked earlier in the week (and it was a disgrace that it had to be asked at all): What would Wendy do, support HP Sauce and Westminster, or support the people of Scotland. She and the whole of SLAB are a disgrace.
She probably hasn't resigned because no other SLAM MSP wants the job. Why do SLAB need a Scottish leader anyway? Aren't the daily instructions from the PM's Office sufficient?

Margaret Curran said: "Scotland's interests are best served through constructive engagement with the Westminster government rather than narrow-minded disputes."
The Labour Group think constructive engagement is kowtowing to anything their bosses in London tell them to do while descending into petulant tantrums in the Scottish parliament and issues. They have absolutely no interest in the welfare of any sector of Scottish Society be it Farmers or Pensioners or even their own core support.
As a Labour spokesperson said "They don't give a **** about Scotland".
Labour MSP Group: We are going to do X! The SNP are narr-ow and holl-ow and the SNP are yell-ow and all the other things that make the Labour go "Ow!"
.
London Labour: No your not doing X and you didnt say that anyway!
Labour MSP Group: Err OK we are not demanding X, but we are calling the Yellow SNPs bluff. We reserve the right to do X, maybe,at some time, if London agree and depends on how many cheques we get, no blanque ones mind you brown envelopes are less traceable. The SNP are yellow by the way.
Labour are trying to show unity and that in fact everyone is on the same page. Maybe its the same page just different books and both stories are tragedys.

The Branch of the Labour Party known as the North British Sub-Region has to do what Westminster tells it to do - in the best interests of the Union.

No mention either of Alex Salmonds message at Ibrox being shouted over by all in attendance last night either.

Having provided consultation to the Labour Party, our work found that the strategy identified by some readers as [italic]"**** and screeching"[/italic] and [italic]"demented"[/italic] is one of the most effective strategies in political science.
Clearly, some readers are not familiar with the [italic]demented cow[/italic] strategy, not to be confused with, but very similar to, the [italic]I Can Shout Louder than You[/italic] approach, the standard British approach post-WWII. Both, highly succesful strategies when used effectively, particularly in Western economies. The institute has conclusively proved, that those who indeed shout louder are, without exception, always right.
More recently, the demented cow strategy won a young Valeria Ciavatta the captain-regent title in a hotly contested contest for the 2003-2004 Semester in San Marino. Showing that the tactic can be used with great effect in a the modern age.

More recently, the demented cow strategy won a young Valeria Ciavatta the captain-regent title in a hotly contested contest for the 2003-2004 Semester in San Marino. Showing that the tactic can be used with great effect in a the modern age.

Proud to be Scottish,
I completely agree, when will a paper stick up for the Labour Party or Conservatives? These parties are being victimised by the liberal British media levitating toward marginal and regional parties for too long. About time someone spoke out against the horrendous bias in our media.
Rest assured proud to be Scottish, the institute will look into this in an impartial manner, and prove that we are correct.

According to Proud to be Scottish, 8:57am:
[quote]No mention either of Alex Salmonds message at Ibrox being shouted over by all in attendance last night either.[/quote]
According to Stuart Bathgate, Scotsman, 15th May:
[quote]Before kick-off Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, was booed when he appeared on screen to wish the team good luck. In contrast, Alex Salmond, the First Minister, received loud cheers when his message was broadcast.[/quote]
You've been telling porkies again, PtBS, tut tut.

[quote]Labour's imaginary handbags came out with MPs, sitting to attention and emitting a loud ironic: "Oooooh!"
[/quote]
Which sums up Liebours attitude to the "hard working vulnerable," as that wise Labour MSP said, "They don't give a fcuk about Scotland."
Margaret Curran on Newsnight exemplifies all that is ugly and nasty about Labour. She looks like a Highland cow with a wasp in it's mouth after eating a thistle. The hatred and bitterness for Scotland and the SNP has so contorted her features that even the Spitting Image team would have bother imaging her. Her perfomrance on Newsnight Scotland was a disgrace reminiscent of River City.
I wonder if any one else noticed, as I did the opening caption on Newsnight Scotland of Alex Salmond beside Nicola Sturgeon, with his right arm raised, and a very conspicuos shadow under his nose which sent out the subliminal Hitler message. I am prepared to believe that some plooky unionist eunuch took liberties with this image and doctored it. It would not surprise me one bit given the shocking bias displayed by the BBC towards unionism.
I am making my complaint known at every opportunity, I will not expect a reply as usual from the unionist eunuchs on Pacific Quay.

PTBS appears to be disappointed that he's not had a chance to gloat over The First Minister's message being shouted over at Ibrox last night. Still, never mind eh.
I enjoyed listening to BBC Scotland's Newsdrive programme yesterday evening. There was a real carnival atmosphere and the presenters haven't sounded so happy since Alex Salmond became First Minister. They went live to their female reporter outside Ibrox at one point and she confirmed that" yes it was a really friendly atmosphere , just a couple of people wandering past with bandaged heads, probably just some bottle throwing as people jostled to get to the front"
The BBC team were ecstatic and far happier than they would have been if it had been a Scotland National team game because then they would have had to distance themselves in case they gave succour to the Nats and encouraged "small mindedness and parochialism."
A Rangers cup final ticked all their boxes though, a sea of Union Flags, a British team from Glasgow who hate the SNP. A bit like themselves really. It was Party time!
In fact afterwards I was suddenly struck by what the tone of their reporting has reminded me of since May 2007. It's as if a team of Celtic supporting journalists have had to spend a year covering a very successful year for the Rangers, they have literally done it through gritted teeth.
Gerry Hassan has a good article about Labour politicians attitudes to the SNP in Scottish Futures, when I read these two paragraphs I thought it could equally apply to our own BBC reporters and their attitude to the SNP.
"Labour has shown that it barely understands what the SNP is about or how people see the dismal quality of the Labour-led administrations of Donald Dewar, Henry McLeish and Jack McConnell which preceded it. Many Scottish Labour politicians whether at the Scottish Parliament or Westminster have a pathological dislike which strays over into hatred of the SNP and this destabilises their judgement of it.
The SNP is seen by many Labour politicians as close to an illegitimate political force – practically the equivalent of an enemy fifth column operating in their rearguard theatre of operations."

This from Robbie Dinwoodie's blog, what can they mean?
"Posts on some politics stories were suspended because of persistent abuse, but it is still possible for readers to air their views on the Herald Forum section of the website which can be found under Main Sections on the Herald homepage or directly at “forum.thehera
ld.co.uk”. Our website is about to be revamped, and the whole issue of reader engagement is being looked at."
I reckon they're planning on ditching us, we're too rude about Labour.

Thanks PTBS I won't.
Thank goodness the McCrone report wasn't real, I mean if they'd lied about the conclusions of that, then hidden it for 30 years I really would be paranoid.
Did you enjoy the game btw ? These Union flags didn't look that absorbent.

Grassy,
Reading you last post, I was struck by the gradual lowering of quality of Scottish Labour leaders since 1999:
1. Donald Dewar - sneaky, not likeable, but professional.
2. Henry McLeish - slightly lightweight, some good ideas, genuine.
3. Jack McConnel - a competent toon councillor, out of his depth.
4. Wendy Alexander - no comment.
Is this a gradual but steady "dumbing-down" of leadership in Scottish Labour? What is going on - who is going to replace Wendy? Scary!.....
Stay Wendy - please stay!

PtBS,
Ok - so how was Grodon Brown's message received - standing ovation - are the cheers still ringing in your ears?
If you think the Herald is becoming bias - what are your thoughts about the Scotsman? They seem to be covering recent stories much better and allowing more open forum debate than the Herald editors, which is a real surprise. I'm seriously thinking of switching back!

Proud to be North British - if he told me it was daylight outside, I'd look out of the window to check. The very fact that he lies about being proud to be "Scottish", is belied by his anti-Scottish attitude and pro-British unionist evident in his posts.
However, he has now given us a clue as to where his worship of the union comes from - no doubt he was one of those waving Ulster and Union flags at Ibrox yesterday. I counted a total of [bold]four[/bold] saltires, when the cameras panned round the crowd. And I actually thought Rangers were representing [bold]Scottish[/bold] football last night, just as Man United and Chelsea will be representing [bold]English[/bold] football in the Champions League Final.
And before he deliberately takes the wrong meaning out of my post, as he usually does when a poster disagrees with his craven "Westminster is best, no matter how damaging it is for Scotland" attitude, I want a decent, positive opposition in our parliament, but the present Labour lot are [bold]not[/bold] providing this. As typified by the ineffectual faux socialist Wendy Alexander, and her sidekicks Baillie, Foulkes, McNeil, Kerr and Curran.

Yep Luigi, they are definitely on a downward trajectory. I was going to write "will they hit bottom with Baillie?" but it conjured up so many unpleasant mental images.....plus I think Wendy's already there.

Could someone tell me if they remember the BBC analysing the first years of the Labour /Liberal time in office?
I certainly can't.
Newsnight demonstrated yet again, the lack of quality from some MSPs.
I would like someone to remind them all that they work for us and not their party.
I would also like to remind them that thier function is to deal with issues and fight Scotlands corner , NOT the " we hate the SNP and we will do everything in our power to bring them down ,no matter what the cost to Scots and Scotland"
If ever a woman demonstrated the WRONG attitude it was that harridan on Newsnight.
As for the flirtatious Tavish , well !
Have none of them the nous to see themselves as others see them ?
Is the BBC team trying to provide a " Get the SNP " platform, since the opposition parties seem incapable in Holyrood?
If that is so, then it really is time to remind them of their neutral status, or it is time to revoke the licence tax!

Michael, what a cr*p article. Maybe you should be writing for Little Britain or do you just want us to giggle as the big boys and girls in Westminster mince.
What about the SCOTLAND PERFORMS initiative we are not allowed to pass comment on, that Douglas Fraser derides for us... What an amazing new tool for we, the people. Hats off to the SNP, and why didn't anyone else think of letting Scotland see where she sits among nations of the world in facing new-world issues?
Let's all laugh at Bruce Forsyth visiting Westminster...

D.D. 10:52am. You are talking rubbish. The BBC Newsnight Scotland which is also rubbish did the same drivel when Lib/Lab were in power. Your SNP man was as bad as the rest. This programme should be taken of the air. One minute you are watching some interesting world event on Newsnight then we are moved over to the usual drivel that we have all seen earlier over and over again in the news. And that talking shop of a Scottish Parliament could also be doing with closing. A complete waste of taxpayers money. The money saved could be heating old folks homes.[bold]bold[/bold]

This from BBC website – rather different to the pro-Rangers guff on The Herald site.
Uefa violence 'stretches' police
Police in Manchester who came under violent attack from Rangers fans in the city for the Uefa Cup final admitted they were "stretched" by events.
Assistant Chief Constable Justine Curran said the influx of 150,000 Scottish fans was "unprecendented".
She said officers came under attack and riot police were deployed after a city centre big screen failed, adding: "I had 15 officers injured last night."

She said officers came under attack and riot police were deployed after a city centre big screen failed, adding: "I had 15 officers injured last night."
