Alexander’s poll own-goal leaves Labour FC looking to subs’ bench
Douglas Fraser: "A fifth day of Labour confusion"
Wendy, Wendy, Wendy. Just when his Britannic Majesty is floundering in political quicksand, Labour's leaderene from north of the Border decides this is the time to plonk a dead albatross around his neck. With friends like these...
Yesterday, the Tory toff, energised from last week's poll results and expecting the delivery of another bouncing triumph in Crewe later this month, could not resist trampling all over private Labour grief.
In another attempt to paint Gordy as weak and dithering, Dave asked the Wendy question - did the PM agree with her that there should be a quick referendum on independence.
"That is not what she has said," replied our noble leader. Really? Tories guffawed in disbelief. Gordy then went off on the long and winding road to the Calman Commission or "review" as Westminster likes to call it.
DC frowned heavily, claiming the PM was "losing touch with reality". The words "we are now entering the twilight zone" appeared to be descending from somewhere high in the Commons rafters.
The Tory leader quoted the big W's macho "bring it on" line, again trying to pin GB down. He quipped: "It's not leadership if no-one's really following him."
Again, the PM sought to divert attention away from his esteemed colleague at Holyrood and rambled on about Calman. He insisted what Wendy was doing was pointing to the "hollowness" of the SNP and that their delay in having an independence referendum was against its own manifesto. At which point the word "rubbish" erupted from the Nationalist benches.
Mr C ended his Scottish skirmish by claiming it was clear Gordy had "lost control of the Scottish Labour Party" and moved on to other matters, flinging insults at his Britannic Majesty.
By far the most acerbic came when the Tory leader, to rising Conservative delirium, said: "This is the Prime Minister who went on American Idol with more make-up on than Barbara Cartland. He sits in Downing St waiting for Shakira to call, waiting for George Clooney to come to tea. I've got a bit of advice for him: why doesn't he give up the PR and start being a PM."
Gordy hit back by accusing his opposite number of being just style over substance. But the damage was done. Among les miserables on the Labour benches buttocks were being clenched and teeth were grinding away. Indeed, it was noticeable
how many back benchers
on the UK Government side began to leave PMQs early like football fans deserting the terraces, knowing their team has lost and hoping to escape the mad rush at the final whistle.
Of course, the match is not over yet but Labour FC is running out of time to save it. The question beginning to be asked is - is the captain up to it or is there a super-sub hiding on the bench?

The thought of an independent Scotland eliminating the Labour Party must be very tempting for Cameron. What will Greyfriars Goldie do when she realises the Union is dead?

I smell conspiracy here. Instead of a referendum, Gazza Broon wants a penalty shoot out and he wants Jackie Baillie as his goalkeeper.

did anyone see wendy talking to brian taylor on the news? You saw her quickly looking at a sheet of paper (crib sheet from westminster HQ with her script) and she backpeddled furiously echoing browns words from pmqs with very little credibility. She should do herself a favour and take a duvet day tomorrow.

It's just such an impossible mess for SLAB, Wendy and Toom Tabbard that I just can't resist typing some of this out again.
Their options from where they are now:
1. Wendy/Broon agree that its all just been sabre-rattling anti-SNP rhetoric.
or
2. SLAB can't raise a Holyrood bill so Toom Tabbard does a U-turn and Westminster Labour have to lash-up an independence referendum, just at the same time as they're wrapping themselves in their British values propaganda/bill of rights. Plus explain the logic of EU referendum bad/Scottish referendum good to 50million antipithetic English citizens.
or
3. Wendy, now a "bring it on, I don't fear the verdict" referendum backer, has to make another 180 degree turn by 2010 and vote against any SNP referndum proposals.
or ....
I could go on all night (and probably will).
Anyway, Newsnight now :-)))

There is no skill in shooting fish when they decide to swim into the barrel.
Although I loved the comment, Vivas. I also note you did not bring your considerable guns to bear.( I have always felt if you get a good metaphor -Run with it !)
It is noteworthy that no one from the "vermin" who blog for the SNP has decided to kick Wendy now she is down.
Alf ,Dougie and the lady Isobel's unquestioning bias should not be forgotten. For Scotland to prosper we need honest reporting, nothing more, nothing less.
This is a fiaasco of their ,as well as her, making.

Well, I think we're all losing touch with reality, not just the PM. When I say reality I mean reality as we've known it. You know, that thing that's quite solid and always there and always the same and doesn't give way when you step on it.
Since the weekend political reality in Scotland has come to seem unreal and insubstantial and unclear and liable to change into something else again at any minute, thanks to Ms Alexander.
Disturbing though this may all be, this is a good sign. It means that we have entered into a period of real and substantial change, in which the stuff of political reality is no longer continuity but has become discontinuity. I'm not going too fast for you, am I?
Enough said: everything's changing. The foundations for truly substantial constitutional change are being laid.

Yet another night when we aren't allowed access to comment on the main article in the Wendy saga. Well, we'll just use this thread instead. So we won't have a Wendy Wefewendum, but will we have a Brown one. I doubt it with the trouble he is in down south, ad it would scupper the Calman Commission.[quote]"Wendy Alexander and I are agreed that all parties in favour of the Union have a duty to expose the hollowness of the SNP's position: claiming they favour independence yet wanting to postpone any referendum. I thought the Conservative Party would welcome such an approach," added Mr Brown.[/quote] This is a blatant lie as the SNP has not changed it's original policy one bit. Whereas Labour have totally reversed everything they were saying about a referendum one year ago.

Apparently an SNP MP raised a point of order on that and corrected Brown's version of the manifesto commitment. He made it quite clear that no postponement was involved on the part of the Scottish Government.

On Sunday Wendy says she is calling Wee Eck's bluff and will push for an early referendum.
Nicol, Annabelle and Calman have no clue as to what she is going on about and are feeling very upset. Millbank Labour say the equivalent of she's on her own. Unionist media in Scotland go into overdrive saying their usual formulaic Salmond is doomed and this is a brilliant move by Wendy.
Monday Wendy turns up on mainstream news and makes a total horlicks of her case. Alan Cochrane in the Torygraph turns through 180 degrees between Monday and Tuesday from isn't she great to what a total numpty. Brian of the braces claims that he is confused and the Hootsmon peddles Alan Cochrane's Yougov Torygraph poll as reality even though Cochrane by Tuesday is saying the poll is not accurate and a 40%+ vote for independence most likely.
Tuesday comes and we find that Wendy's can not put a bill in place as the SNP Government already has one programmed - so tough ! Labour MP's are mainly saying she is a loose cannon and this is the last thing they want after the thumping on May 1st.
Wednesday we are told that the Labour MSP's are solidly behind her but Brownovitch stuffs that by 1205 BST by saying she is on her own, nothing to do with me gov, must of misheard her Mr Cameron........... Wednesday night Wendy spins round the news programs trying to missay what she said on Sunday was not what she said on Sunday.
In the mean time the Police Complaints Commission are investigating Strathclyde Police's failings when investigating Wendy's many misdemeanour's and illegal fund raising scams.
Then last week an oil spokesman let slip that the UK Exchequer is going to make £23.5 Billion+ in taxes from oil and gas from the Scottish Sector in 2008 - 2009.
Is it just me or are the SNP getting a lot of free publicity from Labour's ineptitude?

Christ, Ian Gray is considered one of SLAB's safer pair of hands so no surprise that they put him in the Newsnight firing line tonight.
And Gordon Brewer just tore him to tiny tiny shreds for his incessant assertion that black is white, up is down, that 1 = 0 and that Wendy and Toom Tabbard are saying the same thing..
I almost felt sorry for Gray.
Almost, but not quite.

Just watched Ian Gray get minced on Newsnight. His backside must have been biting lumps out of his chair going by the amount of squirming he was doing.
His face got redder and redder and his eye twitched faster and faster as he struggled to put forward a cohesive argument in defence of Wendy Alexander.
This Labour party in Scotland are so badly damaged they are now beyond repair.

Still chuckling from watching Newsnight Scotland - Gray was hung out to dry. He was clearly having to defend the indefensible, and by gosh he knew it. Strangely enough I remember Gray from school, in Inverness. Pleasant chap, but the phrase "nice but dim" comes to mind. And remember he was Enterprise Minister after Wendy left in a strop - Oh and then he lost his seat.......
On the other hand the FM could obviously not believe his luck.
You know it just struck me today that we may be entering the end game.

[bold]Tearlach[/bold] says,[quote]You know it just struck me today that we may be entering the end game.[/quote] This is a perceptive comment.
The pace of change in the world is so rapid it leaves you breathless.
The Internet is the 21st century's equivalent of Gutenberg's moveable type. which changed the course of history.
Consider how the various Soviet states left their Union. Think how quickly the Berlin Wall came down and Germany was united. Things that seem impossible dreams, suddenly happened.
The dependency parties' dam that has held back the aspirations of Scotland for 300 years has been cracking up for about 30 years. It may take just 3 years to see it burst completely.

[italic]David Cameron put Mr Brown under pressure to say whether he backed Ms Alexander. Asked by the Tory leader whether he agreed with her that there should be a referendum now, Mr Brown said: “It is not what she has said.[/italic] ...
...The Prime Minister insisted that she was referring to the hollowness of the SNP who had promised an immediate referendum but would not now hold one until 2011.
According to Alexander:
[italic]“The Prime Minister and I are agreed about exposing the hollowness of the SNP's position, claiming they favour independence, yet wanting to hold a referendum in only 2010 or 2011.
“David Cameron is wrong. His question showed his continuing lack of understanding of the process. The Prime Minister was right to say no one was proposing a referendum at Westminster.
“The procedures of the Scottish Parliament mean that even if the SNP or anyone else introduced a Bill at Holyrood it could take up to 12 months to be considered.”[/italic]
It looks as if Ms Alexander, (and according to her) in collusion with Mr Brown, have painted the Labour Party into a corner.
It's obvious they still haven't come to terms with the rules of the devolved government.
Once reality dawns on them that Alexander is in no position to bring forward this Bill, and having stated that Brown has no intention of doing so, how do they think they can bring this bill forward?
Having now committed her party to a referendum that she has no power to bring about, how can they now vote against the SNP Referendum Bill in 2010?
Will Wendy do a spectacular U-U-turn?

“The Prime Minister and I are agreed about exposing the hollowness of the SNP's position, claiming they favour independence, yet wanting to hold a referendum in only 2010 or 2011.
“David Cameron is wrong. His question showed his continuing lack of understanding of the process. The Prime Minister was right to say no one was proposing a referendum at Westminster.
“The procedures of the Scottish Parliament mean that even if the SNP or anyone else introduced a Bill at Holyrood it could take up to 12 months to be considered.”

I love it seeing the other, minor parties running about like headless chickens, and Sir Ek and the SNP have said NOTHING. As pointed out in the "Twists and Turns" article, the one constant has been the SNP position and what they have stated in their manifesto.

Amazingly, Gray is by far from being the worst of the SLAB MSP's.
I can only imagine the scale of the bl00dy carnage that Brewer would have inflicted on Baillie or Jamieson or Kerr.

i have a theory. Now hear me out, I reckon that wee wendy is finding the job as leader of the labour msps at holyrood to be too demanding. Now she knows that Gordon doesn't want her to quit, but she's finding it way too hot in the kitchen and is doing her best to get fired. It beggars belief that someone with her purported intellect can be so consistently incompetent. Course i could be wrong.

Bendy is loopy. And that's another fine mess GB has got himself into. He should have sacked her when he had the chance, she's as much common sense as a pheasant trying to crossing the M74!
And she'll last about as long.
These manse weans, too many totty pan loaf sandwiches with crusts cut off if you ask me.

oh dear. Ian Gray was absolutely awful on newsnight tonight. Never as a politician get put into a situation where you dont understand the brief. I would say he has done his political career no good and should need to get those undergarments to the launderette as soon as possible. Brown should have got rid of wendy Alexander earlier as he only kept her because of her brother.
Alex Salmonds interview was everything that Gray wasnt. As a politician its always great to answer the last question with an emphatic YES.
Labour are dead in the water now.

i thought brewer set him up nicely over the members bill, got him to say that was one of her options then later slapped him down by saying it isn't possible hehe. Does anyone over at slab hq know anything about holyrood procedures (well apart from filling out expense forms!) The cards and casino comment was priceless too. Will wendy still be leader by the end of the week? God i hope so.

To be more incompetent, they would need extra training.
Alex Salmond has just awarded the Great Cross of St. Andrew, in its "red" version to Bendy, maroon to Broon. They are the best secret SNP members we ever had, he said.
He is looking forward hanging them around their necks at the very first opportunity.
Will Bendy pull a sicky tomorow?
Can't wait till noon.

Salmond may just call a referendum, he was obviously waiting till 2110 because he thought the tories would be in and the Scots would vote for independence. But now with the decimation of nu lab in England he may just think the situation now is better.

Interesting Newsnight (Hootsmanland Edition) . The sight of Gordon
Brewer, sweating profusely, glowering at big Eck (Soon to be King! )

since I last read one of Herr Wullie, Aberdeen, Waffen SS
Untersturmfuhrer's postings. Brewer : " You cannot call for the
resignation of the leader of the opposition ! " Er... Gordon, - how to
put this delicately ; HE FECKIN WELL CAN !!! AND HE FECKIN
WELL DID !!!
And speaking of our dear friend Wullie ; forcrissakes will you please
get it into that thick lumpen skull ; THE NEW - LABOUR PARTY IS
MORE AKIN TO RIGHT WING FASCISTIC ORGINISATIONS
THAN ANY LEFTIST ENTITY 'S. GOTTIT ? GOOD !!!
When was the last time you saw any of those animals waving red
flags, or singing leftist songs. These middle class multi-millionaire
careerist 's wouldn't know a what a socialist even looks like if they
were bitten on the **** by one. And finally to drive home the point
cos I know in your case I need to. Do you think that supporters of
THE NEW LABOUR PROJECT such as D Fraser and A Young are
lefties, well do you? And creatures such as those are sadly all that

It strikes me as slightly scary, when the leader of the, now Opposition Party in Holyrood, can make policy on the hoof, without, as far as I can make out, any reference to the other labour MSP's, did this go through their Executive in Scotland, far less the UK labour Cabinet ?
Has democracy within the labour party gone the way of democracy in the country as a whole, top down instead of bottom up ?
Time for a complete change, in the way our elected Representatives represent us, at all levels, from local Government up ,
No wonder politics is such a turn off, when even our politicians' don't have a say in the way that their own Party's Politics are conducted.
