Alexander turns up heat on Salmond, saying 'bring it on'
ROBBIE DINWOODIE, Chief Scottish Political CorrespondentMay 06 2008

Labour's Holyrood leader Wendy Alexander yesterday increased the pace on her new-found enthusiasm for a straight yes or no independence referendum, telling Alex Salmond: "Enough of huff, puff and bluff - bring it on."

But if Ms Alexander's uncharacteristically aggressive response was calculated to strike fear in her Nationalist opponents and inspire confidence in her party colleagues and Unionist allies, there was little sign of that working last night.

Her dramatic U-turn on television on Sunday came out of the blue, but she showed no sign of holding back on radio last night, saying the SNP's plans not to legislate until 2010 meant a climate of uncertainty right through to the next Holyrood election.

Arguing for a straight argument for or against independence, she said: "Let's get on with it. It's a measure of their weakness that all they do is bleat about me changing my mind. That will be forgotten by tomorrow. The reality is that the SNP are running scared of Scotland's verdict."

But Ms Alexander asserted that only now had the SNP said they would delay legislating for a referendum until 2010, when in fact that was their manifesto commitment.

She also said it would take nine months for that legislation to be passed, a claim the government denies, and she also cited business tycoon Sir Tom Hunter as calling for an early vote, something he specifically denied after comments he made recently.

Ms Alexander avoided the question of whether or not she had Gordon Brown's backing for the new tactic but she insisted: "I am very attracted to the idea of a straight choice for or against independence which Alex Salmond says he is in favour of but which he seems to be remarkably reluctant to put to the vote."

An aide to Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: "We are delighted that Labour's disarray has forced Ms Alexander into a massive U-turn. We will stick to what we offered the people; demonstrating credibility in government, engaging with the people through our national conversation and bringing forward a referendum in 2010. This is a timetable that was set out in our manifesto."

Robert Brown of the Liberal Democrats, said: "This is a panic response from a Labour Party in free-fall after last week's English and Welsh elections. Wendy Alexander does not support independence and politicians should not support a referendum which they do not back.Voters in Scotland will not look kindly on politicians who put themselves and their party above the interests of the country."

A Tory spokesman said: "Scotland's future should be the subject of calm and considered debate, not knee-jerk panic by a Labour Party in political meltdown. The Calman Commission should be left to get on with its health check on devolution."

Tom Hunter said nothing of the sort, he actually states the opposite and that a referendum should possible even be delayed into the next parliament....

Is all this really happening? Suddenly we've got enough votes at Holyrood to pass a referendum of the breakup of the United Kingdom - the biggest event in the constitution of these islands for 300 years - and it hasn't been mentioned ONCE on BBC News 24 all day, which is leading me to believe I'm dreaming it.

Rev. S. Campbell

I switched on News 24 this evening and there was a studio discussion on U-Bendy Wendy.

Also the second item on Channel 4 News.

Wardog, it's a bank holiday so no Wendy on Newsnicht tonight.

When the serious political commentators come back from their holidays they are going to make hay. This will become a huge UK story I think.

Apart from all her gaffs these last two days she appears on tonight's news backing a straight yes or no. Very strange.

No sleekit ambiguity in the questions?

No counting the dead or no-showers as no votes?

I expect a slap down from Desperate Des or McChoob this week. Or maybe not....

So let's get this right - totally opposed, goes as far as to set up a Commission to look at every possible combination and connotation EXCEPT independence - and then suddenly decides, without a word to her other Unionist mates on the Commission, that she has about turned and thinks it's a great idea! Dearie, dearie, me Wendy! I think that perhaps Steven Purcell had a lot more to do with this than Tom Hunter. He is breathing down your neck as the potential next leader.....
Once the labour party has suffered the total humiliation of Gordon Brown and Wendy Alexander and decides to wipe the slate clean, we might have an interesting opposition in the new, Independent Scotland. Until then, it's like having a ringside seat at the circus.

So liebour and Wendy the wee bairn wants to cut and run and have the referendum now.

We all knew that New Labour would pull the rug from under the Tories and Libdem when it suited them. However, for a straight yes or no on independence? Woof....never saw that coming.

Surely that's the problem - even allowing for Alex Salmond's highly effective profile, there is simply no effective opposition. Wendy Alexander is a joke, and Nicol Stephen is no better.
There's no better argument for independence than the absymal quailtiy of the politicians on the opposition benches.

Who has the actual legal power to call an independence referendum? As I understand it only Westminister has the legal right (we're not talking moral, ethical etc.,...just legal).

Am I right or wrong?

(I may even be missing something on the European front....can folks apply for separation in the European parliament?...I must confess it seems to me the new European superstate has a great deal more legal power than has yet been tried out.....)

Bendy Wendy and the unionist rabble accuse the SNP of not keeping to their Manifesto, then complain when they do. Ha, Ha, Ha.

The Calman Commission was brought in by the PM's Office. It's perhaps an interesting exercise, but it has got nothing to do with our Scottish Government. Perhaps Sir Ek will cut and paste the Commissions findings onto the SNP's National Discussion Website.

The Labour Party may be a joke, but this issue isn't. I don't think it is my interest or maybe even in Scotland's interest to be independent. And this issue will divide our country if theres any real risk of it happening. Wendy is stupid to play with matches.

Tonight I read again about Wallace. It was my old spinster teacher Miss Liddle at primary school in the 1960's who first taught us about him. It ignited a fire in my heart that was never extinguished. But while I came to realise that the Labour crony system was holding my country back, I never really believed that we might be actually be able to Be That Nation Again.

What do these Labour fools want to do? We are in danger of sleepwalking into a free state. Is that what they really want? We are as daft as the Irish, our hearts overrule our heads.

Surely it is corruption, and special legal rules for Labour, and jobs for the boys, and squandering our money we want rid of, not the United Kingdom?

Wendy is so bereft of ideas and ability, please will her party not rid us of this turbulent priestess.

He added

“Wendy forgets that she is not the leader of Scottish Labour. Gordon Brown is. She is only the leader of the Labour MSPs at Holyrood.

“This decision is an indication of her desperation given her own poll ratings. It is almost as if we are always tail-ending and following Salmond. Surely there are more important issues than this for Labour. Who exactly has she consulted on this?”

Charlie Whelan, the former spin doctor for Gordon Brown and now political officer of the Unite trades union, is trying to put some steel into Labour's operation in Scotland.

He had meetings with both Ms Alexander and her front bench team this week.

Unite sponsors around 20 MSPs at Holyrood and apparently has a significant election "war-chest" ........

The very same Unite Union that held out on pension talks at Grangemouth....

In the end a referendum has always been inevitable.

A referendum in 2011, after 4 years of SNP governance of Scotland FOR Scotland, and after a year of Conservative UK government under Dave Eton College Cameron...... with the possibility of Barnet being cut, and Scotland at the bottom of the Tories' "to do" list (note that one of Boris's policies, approved by Dave, is that Londoners will stop subsidising Scotland!)....... will almost certainly result in Independence.

Labour will want to try to have the referendum now, before we are all convinced that SNP government is good for us, and that Tory government is very bad.

But Alex said after 4 years of government.... and after 4 years of government it will be. 2011. Can't wait.

I've never been an activist, I'm not even a member....but I will work night and day so that this referendum gives us freedom from one of the worst regimes in Europe.

(Sorry for the garbled sentence above....)

If Wendy did do this off her own bat then she really is finished. She's got delusions of grandeur and she thinks that she is someone important in the Labour party, not just a lowly MSP.

If this was done without central authority then the slap-down should have been done immediately. As it is it has been allowed to run and run.

The Labour party is disintegrating as we watch.

The question is what's the hurry for a referendum? It cuts the ground right out from under the Calman Commission but if she wants a multi-option ballot paper the sole purpose of the Calman Commission will be to become the generator of the third option rather than a scam to avoid talking about independence.

Nicol and Annabel would probably pull the plug on it for that reason alone.

What is Wendy's strategy and how long is it going to take before the British Labour party comes hunting her. Maybe Gordon's in on it and in his usual fashion is keeping in the background so the whole thing becomes deniable.

Interesting times.

Yes its clear that Angus Macleod is telling Labour to dump her.

It appears that despite the best efforts of various journalists no senior Labour figures have backed her position.

She's finished but she's taking Scottish Labour, her wee brother and Nicol Stephen with her.

and thats why wendy said it and not gordon. and why she probably looked like a rabbit in the headlights on C4.

gordon probably shoved her in there and told her to get on with it and if everyone had said great wendy he would have said actually it was my idea now he gets to say yes naughty wendy.

Angus is saying with no uncertainty to dump Wendy Alexander

His wishful thinking is that she was talking about a calman commission questions but that's nto what she said - she clearly stated that she wanted a straight yes or no question to independence that will likely come (pending starting the bill process in 2009) at the very earliest in 2010, just prior to a General Election?

Bring it on Indeed!

She should be in her cot eating a rusk.
Scottish Labour Dances to Westministers Flute band.
Mayday Mayday, we've got a red hawk down!
Something really bad smelling just hit the fan
I think we know what she was reading the wee bairns the night before
A party is melting away faster than a rolo on a radiator.
The cac is hitting the proverbial in the Labour Party.
it's like having a ringside seat at the circus.
Around the rocks, the rugged rascal ran.
Guys, nothing personal, but I'm getting really confused ...

As someone posted in the Sunday Herald. The SNP cry in 2011 will be "who is best suited to defend Scotland from the Anglocentric Tories". There is only one political party in Scotland whose SOLE interest is Scotland. Alexanders own spokesperson has just said the reason for this u-turn is because the General Election won't be until as late as possible. Wendy herself said that she has held "Tactical Discussions" - so this call has **** All to do with "the best interests of Scotland", but more to try and sustain the snouts in the trough at Westminster.

In the Times article I see that one of her MSP's is complaining that none of them were consulted. He obviously believes that Broon would consult HIM and LISTEN to HIM. This MSP has obvious delusions of grandeur. He probably even believes Broon knows his name.

Nail on the head Karin. Gordon's behind this but he'll now let the Labour dogs rip her to pieces.

Last week she was accused of not being economical with the truth, so this week she goes out all guns blazing to show the world how good she is at this particular skill!
