Brown carries can for poll debacle but more problems mount
|
| CONTRITE: Prime Minister Gordon Brown being interviewed on BBC1's The Andrew Marr Show yesterday. Picture: Jeff Overs/PA |
Gordon Brown yesterday took responsibility for Labour's poll debacle last Thursday, and admitted there were no excuses for what he called "a referendum on Labour".
Facing tough TV interviews, he acknowledged he is now fighting as the underdog to David Cameron's Tories.
But the Prime Minister said he felt the hurt people feel at the supermarket checkout and petrol forecourt.
To those who see him as out of touch, he stressed his "ordinary" upbringing, knowing hardship, and the friends he still keeps from Kirkcaldy schooldays represent today's Britain.
He has spent too long at his desk on the detail of trying to solve problems, he said. He admitted making mistakes in abolishing the 10p tax band and presentation of policy. And he pledged to get out more to listen first-hand.
This was the contrite Labour leader yesterday, reconnecting with "families and their finances" and stressing "value for money", but knowing that last week's election results across England and Wales were only the start of his problems.
He faces talk of a leadership challenge, Commons defeat on detention of terror suspects, a fuel tax U-turn is likely, there is revolt once more on the income tax muddle, and a tricky by-election in two weeks.
He has just lost his choice as party general secretary before even taking up the job, Alex Salmond is rampant in his native Scotland and Boris Johnson is the new mayor in London, trialling Tory populism on his front doorstep.
The revolt on the 10p tax rate runs deepest, as it was the dominant theme of last week's drubbing. Chief Labour rebel Frank Field, a former welfare minister, warned yesterday that changes so far promised do not go far enough.
He wrote an article saying Mr Brown had left him "thoroughly confused", Chancellor Alistair Darling's letter of reassurance was "clear as mud" and subsequent ministerial attempts to clarify the compensation package have done anything but.
Mr Brown admitted it is "hard to find" some of the low-paid people who do not qualify for tax credits and who should therefore be compensated. It was not 5.3 million people affected, he claimed, and then struggled to explain how many millions it is. So it is not just the recipients of tax credits who find them baffling: it sounded like their chief architect does as well.
With the Prime Minister weakened, back benchers can only have gained an appetite for revolt over plans to allow detention of terror suspects for up to 42 days. With Mr Brown facing the prospect of Commons defeat, he was yesterday practising the defence that his opponents are soft on terror.
Then there was his refusal to defend the planned 2p per litre increase in forecourt tax, intended as a green measure from this autumn. He left it near certain there is a U-turn coming on that, but left that to Mr Darling.
Mr Brown said yesterday it was not a priority for him to reshuffle his ministerial team. He knows and they know Thursday's loss was all about him. Justice Secretary Jack Straw accidentally admitted as much at the weekend, saying voters had "punished him".
The Prime Minister is not in a strong enough position to crack the cabinet whip, whereas others around him are in a position to start positioning to replace him. Left-wing back bencher John McDonnell yesterday quashed speculation he would stand as a stalking horse, but was one of those calling for a radical change of approach.
There are housing, education, health and constitutional reforms being drawn up by ministers, which may have limited relevance in Scotland. The Prime Minister hopes to put these into his legislative programme for next year. No longer saving that for November and the Queen's Speech, it is there that he is pinning his hopes to start turning things around before summer.

Gordon Broon is a real bastardd. You judge some one by their actions not their words.
Broon giving £25 Billion to Northern Rock.
Broon giving £50 Billion to the other banks.
Broon not giving a penny to the Scots budget.
Bastardd Broon robbing the poor with the 10 pence tax.

Yes but what does that actually mean. Is it just words of contrition?
If you listen to Straw and some of Brown's other cohorts they are still unswerving on the same policies!

Mr Brown, you increased taxation on aggregates, landfill, insurance, so many stealth taxes which The Public don't notice they are paying until the cost of living gradually rises. You increased taxation on pensions, the effect of which many of The Public only find out when they retire. The 10p tax which you deducted from the lower paid, The Public noticed immediately it took effect. In comparison, you and your fellow MP's vote yourselves a pay increase which is taxable but claim unlimited tax free expenses without the necessity of receipts under £250 which business have to produce for the Inland Revenue.
You use speed cameras, parking offences, congestion charges, the bin lid not shutting properly etc etc to create revenue from The Public. The country is at war and you wonder why The Public are miserable and apathetic.
Small business is suffering badly with the taxes, rules & regulations, tied up in red tape and you increase......the taxes and the rules & regulations.
All business is tied up in Health & Safety rules yet the roads which The Public drive on are dangerous.
The Public are worried about the credit crunch, keeping a roof over their heads and you are increase the fuel tax by 2p in the autumn.
I could go on and on, crime, job security, lost data......so many situations which worry The Public and make them feel insecure.
Your mistake is in underestimating the knowledge of The Public and forgetting that they employ you.

Good post Vivas.
He's lies.
He won't be doing any of the things you suggested... nor will be supermarket shopping and finding himslef looking for the cheaper shop's own brand, or even basics brand. On top of his salary of over £160,000 per annum, he has £100 a week for food, more than some people have to live on.
His salary WENT UP: with the doubling of the bottom band of tax, and the reduction of the second level.
He feels no pain what so ever
He lies.

I know a lot of people have a deep affection for Enoch Powell's little pearl's of wisdom on the herald forum. Here's what he prophesied in 1964.
''It is no accident that the Labour Party of 1964 should share this craving for autocracy, for economic self-sufficiency, with the pre-war Fascist régimes and the present-day Communist states. They are all at heart totalitarian. ''
''In the end, the Labour party could cease to represent labour. Stranger historic ironies have happened than that.''
Very wise words, Enoch . Never a truer word spoken and it has come true.

UNlike subrosa I managed few more minutes of Marr's interview, just till I heard him saying "I can't accept what you are saying" refering to Marr's "but the voters have already heard from you what you are sying now, and voted against you nevertheless".
That's the headlines, HE CAN'T ACCEPT... anything else is bulllhorn
Mt summarizes it perfectly: Is he going to REDUCE taxes, red tape, rules & regulations....NO HE IS NOT,.
Does the People really need relief now? YES
If he can't do it someone has to, if not now at the next kicking out, but God protects us till then because is going to be blood, sweat and tears.

Crocodile tears - feeling hurt and guilty but not repentant or willing to reverse the damage he has caused. If he was really hurt he would restore the 10p tax rate and reduce the world's highest (by a very long way) fuel tax.

When was the last time Broon felt his wallet squeezed filling the family car with fuel?
All he can do is think up more ways of increasing the tax burden on all but the super rich, to pay for his dangerously high public spending.
He has created a client state, no longer a welfare state, whilst massively increasing the public sector. All to ensure that these people no loger depend on themselves, but depend on the labour party.
His lies, deceit and incompetance as chancellor are going to destroy him as the country heads for bankruptcy, in true labour tax and spend style.

First of all he said no one would lose out, then he said only a few thousand perhaps, now he tells us he doesn't know. Incompetence of this magnitude cannot be acceptable from a man leading our country.
Until every one of the 5.3 million affected have their losses refunded, this government should not be trusted. If he is searching for those affected, everyone should bombard Downing Street with e-mails.
For a start, what about individuals who have retired early, voluntary or involuntary, and have incomes of less than £18500. I know of many who have work pensions varying between £7000 to £15000 per annum.
If GB would care to look in the situations vacant columns, a high percentage of jobs offer salaries circa £14k per annum.
I could go on and on, so there is no excuse for GB not to know.
Can I suggest the first point of call is the INLAND REVENUE office.
They should be able to give him the info he needs.

Come on now folks, you can't blame Gordie or NL for some of the problems that have been caused by world economics (read greed). but you can certainly blame him and NL for :-
1) doubling indirect taxes since 1997
2) selling off our gold reserves at less than bargain basement prices.
3) allowing the UK economy to ride on a wave of consumer debt and then lie about how well he has personally managed the econmony.
4) the raid on pensions.
5) wasting millions of taxpayers money on failed draconian taxes such as IR35 abd S660A.
6) wasting millions of taxpayers money allowing HMRC to try and drag business through the Commissioners when they have lost at the Commissioners at a current ratio of over 1500 to 1.
7) Continue to rake in extra millions from fuel tax as the oil price increases.
8) Increasing the burdon on the public purse by hiring more and more who are paid from the public purse.
9) Allowing the wholesale plunder of the public purse by those at Westminster and trying to prevent us, the people for knowing about it.
..... and more!

He's lost it if he thinks all he has to do is admit he's responsible for a catalogue of major problems for the British public and then he'll learn and lead again. Moving forward to a better future, sorting out the 10p debacle, offering leadership and carrying on with the job.
I'm sorry chum, but that wasn't what people voted for last week. "Carrying on with the job" is precisely what we don't want you to do any more of. An mea culpa then a resignation into ignominy would be far more in line with what the public has been telling him and he has been refusing to listen to. "I feel their pain" - no he doesn't. His deceit and lies have been demonstrated by his actions of the past 11 years. Stop listening to what HE's saying look at what he's DONE. That should be convincing enough for anyone that he should be parked somewhere else.

From the Guardian:

No, dear cabinet member, its definitely red, with yellow flashing lights.
Not that I want Gordon to leave the field of play just yet.
Mr Brown admitted it is "hard to find" some of the low-paid people who do not qualify for tax credits and who should therefore be compensated
Until last month that wasn't a problem.
Reverse the stupid tax hike you moron.... It is THAT easy.

10p off fuel duty? Lets half it and allow folks to spend their well earned wages on what they themselves want, maybe they could even pay off their debts!
I earn £100,000 a year.
Iearn £50,000 a year.
I earn £25,000 a year.
I earn £12,0000 a year.
I earn £ 6000 a year.
This fuel duty tax hits right at the heart of the poor and is probably one of the biggest reasons for the poor getting poorer, why should we pay this Wetminster Govt this kind of tax, this has to be more despised than the poll tax!

Here you can see why wendy now wants to have a referendum asap
To divert attention away from internal strife in the slab project and to free up 2010 (referendum year) for a general election.

Dear All
The end is now in sight for Gordon Brwon to step down.
He is a man drowning and his "pals" are hiding the lifebelts.
It's over for him and his puppet, Wendy Alexander!
Yours sincerely

Writing on the message from the Local Elections in England + Wales
....It's over. There was nothing constructive in the voters' message. These elections were not an invitation to change. They were a big two-fingered salute, a raspberry, a pressing of the de-trousered national buttocks to the window of the polling station....
It's over. IT'S TIME!
