Alexander accuses SNP of being ‘one big let-down’

DOUGLAS FRASER and ROBBIE DINWOODIE

Wendy Alexander yesterday set out to turn round perceptions of the SNP government, as it approaches its first anniversary in power, by portraying it as "one big let-down".

The Scottish Labour leader moved on to new political territory by accusing ministers of leaving Scottish students with lower levels of loans and grants support than in England. She said ministers underestimated the cost of free prescriptions and attacked them over the detail left out of their efficiency drive.

Ms Alexander launched a new stage of Labour's fightback by telling Holyrood journalists the extent of the SNP's broken promises, underfunding and spending cuts totals £2.7bn. "This has been a year of ditched promises, 12 months of underfunded pledges and real cuts now beginning to existing programmes," she said.

"The evidence shows the SNP have let down Scotland by overpromising, underfunding and underdelivering. They've failed to keep their word and they've failed to do what they said they would do."

The Labour analysis suggests the SNP ditched promises worth £656m from its election manifesto - including the pledge to drop student debt and introduce a grant for first-time home-buyers. Labour accused the Scottish Government of underfunding other initiatives it had promised - including drug rehabilitation, free school meals, carers' support and nursery provision - by a total of £953m.

In addition, Labour argued Nationalist ministers have cut existing spending budgets by £1.1bn over three years.

Ms Alexander went further than before, saying students from poor backgrounds in England have £1800 more in combined grants and loans than the £4400 they could get in Scotland - although Scottish students do not face £3000 in tuition fees.

She said ministers budgeted on only a 5% rise in demand for prescription as a result of charges being phased out, when experience in Wales showed demand boomed by 27%.

Labour's Holyrood leader explained her party's poor poll rating by claiming the public wanted to give the new government "the benefit of the doubt", and cuts have not yet been felt. The SNP's parliamentary business minister Bruce Crawford hit back at what he called a "moanifesto", saying: "Labour lost their first election in Scotland for 50 years because of their negativity, total lack of ideas and silly attacks on the SNP - one year on and they have clearly learned nothing."

Citing the end of the graduate endowment, the council tax freeze, business rates cuts and bridge toll abolition, he added: "This is a government that hit the ground running from day one and is delivering the most dynamic and successful policy programme of any Scottish administration."

Meanwhile, Ms Alexander clashed with First Minister Alex Salmond over Scotland Week in the US. He claimed the event had double the media coverage, when the government budget for it fell from £700,000 last year to £400,000.

Rebranded from Tartan Week and now in its 10th year, Mr Salmond told MSPs it was the most successful event yet and its advertising value was the equivalent of $10m (£5m).

"We got more bangs for our bucks this year under this government than was achieved under previous governments," he said, citing television coverage in the US and Canada and more than a dozen newspapers which had reported on the events.

Labour on the other hand have completely betrayed this country. It stood by as the financial institutions sucked out its wealth and didn't invest in new companies, as companies were sold off willy nilly to overseas buyers, as the trade gap got wider and wider, as household debt went through the roof and as house prices rose and disenfranchised first time buyers.....

Wendy Alexander should pull her head back in before someone bites it off...

Welcome back Wendy. We all missed you. You really are very funny.

Sadly, I think my beloved Wendy should stick to her trademark verbal metaphor creation and avoid the numbers.....

As I recall the Anglais are still quite upset that their young-uns are at a disadvantage re Scots youth over Uni costs (Berwick comes to mind....)

As for budget cuts, did not Westministerstein reduce the standard transfer payments by a vast amount (and threatening more)? Surely this script plays right into Mr. Salmond's hand.....

She ought to be questioning his projection economics, not supposed cuts that can be laid directly at the previous government's instigation, and Westminister's direct current involvement.....

Still, she is doing better.... Perhaps in another couple of years......

WENDY FOR QUEEN!!!

God that made me laugh! That's right Wendy, my parents -- both of whom are lifelong Labour voters and unfortunately tend to believe your party's propaganda -- have both given up on politics and voting because they want to give the SNP a chance. It has nothing to do with being disillusioned with their party of choice. My sister -- a lifelong Labour voter -- has decided already not to vote at the next election because she wants to give the SNP a chance. It has nothing to do with realising that there is no difference between Labour and the Tories, and she wants nothing more to do with you. My brother -- a lifelong Labour voter -- has decided to vote SNP at the next election because he wants to give the SNP a chance. It has nothing to do with him becoming interested in politics since it got interesting last May and feeling let down by your party and what you really stand for.

Good God woman, have a political tantrum by all means but try not to embarrass yourself by mentioning things which exist only in your la-la land.

You could not make this up. The one big let down since May has been Red Wendy. The public expect honesty and integrity from their politicians, they have got neither from the perfect ten.

Instead of spouting this drivel, which most right thinking people in this country do not agree with, ( what about the polls Wendy are they all wrong?) Labour should start trying to stick up for Scotland, something they are thus far incapable off.

Broon has just stolen about £100 per year from my fairly modest pension, but I am really glad that this money will go to help support vulnerable Labour MSPs, or poor journalists like Douglas Fraser. Where is your support for all the vulnerable two year olds who's parents earn less than £18500?

Remember hen, when Broon goes you are history, as he is one of the few people who does not think you are useless.

"the snp have let down scotland by overpromising, underf

Has Ms. Wendy, "Brain the size of a planet", Alexander not worked out yet that the only money that Scotland has to spend is doled out by her boss Mr. Gordon Brown?

If he won't front up with the cash in the block grant then the SNP government hasn't got it to send.

Has she the political understanding to work out that she's just accused the Labour party leadership of underfunding Scotland?

My God! if the SNP are one big let down, where does that leave NEW Labour and Wendy Alexander??? She's having a laugh, right?
She's not usually a comedian, maybe she's serious, but surely not.
Could it be she is just losing it, totally lost her marbles?? Is she just trying to join her brother in New Labour's la la land retirement home, yes, that's it, blood is thicker than................
....she obviously doesn't realise that all pensions must go to the New Labour debt fund !!!

I am sure the SNP will hardly blink after being wendied -
much akin to being ravaged by a dead Haggis.

Brown, Browne, Foulkes, Baillie,Cairns
& Alexander are the SNP's dream
team and they are so out of touch they don't even realize it.
They collectively seem to be in complete denial that
their historic unpopularity could possibly be related
to their own actions. In the last few months
alone we have had :
. Punitive taxes on the Scottish Whisky industry.
. Low wage earners hammered by removal of 10p tax level.
. Gordon Brown reneges on immoral cluster bombing.
. Incompetent handling of the Credit crisis
. Westminster takes control of Wendy's review
. Collective bullying of the elected Scottish Government

Labour would benefit from some Burn's advice here :

Oh wad some Power the giftie gie us
To see oursels as ithers see us!

Easily the funniest headline of the year..........by a mile.

I'm not all that concerned with the article either, it is a rehash of everything that Labour/Douglas have been spouting for the last ten months.

They have simply bundled the slogans all together and re-released them, it wasn't a hit the first time and this compilation of flops will fare just the same.

Why has poor Dinwoodie been forced to accompany 'Discredited Dougie' on this?............. I wonder if he is responsible for squeezing the 'Scotland Week' statement in at the end.

"This is a government that hit the ground running from day one and is delivering the most dynamic and successful policy programme of any Scottish administration."

Yip - despite being shortchanged by the most spiteful and vindictive bunch of anti-Scotland chancers.

Dougthedoug sums up the whole sorry business nicely: "she's just accused the Labour party leadership of underfunding Scotland".

When is it you appear in court Ms Alexander to answer for your confessed criminal behaviour?

Wendy Alexander yesterday portrayed the SNP government as "one big let-down".
A carpenter arrived in my home today to mend a settee. He'd been doing the same job happily for thirty years. One man, one van, one wee workshop, lots of house calls.

In the middle of drilling and hammering, unsolicited, without prompting, he started talking about the Scottish government reducing his small business rate from £1800 a year to £300.

"Fantastic. It really helps small companies like mine who just get by year-to-year making a living. I never voted SNP until the last election - I hesitated but thought about it, I wasn't sure, but took the plunge, and I have to say they have been just great. They really are for the ordinary guy, and for Scotland. I think they're doing a great job."

And so was he, mending the settee legs, talking enthusiastically and garrulously of our new government.

So there you have it from the man in the street, or at least, the man in my livingroom.

Of course, the only man in the street Wendy Alexander listens to is the one in Downing Street and that'll do her as much good as an empty toilet holder in an emergency.

Wendy should become ambassador to oompaloompaland-her 'attack' is unintentially hilarious, and her finger is so far from the Scottishb political pulse that it almost beggars belief.

I feel sorry for the author's of this piece-they must be embarrassed-I particularly enjoyed the footnote where it stated "Meanwhile" (lol) Wendy Alexander 'clashed' with Alex Salmond over Scotland week, but failed to actually mention anything that resembled a 'clash' or even one word fae oor wee wendy the dreamer who should have got the boot ages ago if labour had any political talent of note, but labour is bereft of anybody worthy of a vote as they will find out as soon as we get the chance!

Wendy criticising anyone at all is always amusing given her total blind spot when it comes to her own performance as Leader of the Labour Group in the Scottish Parliament. 10 out of 10? Don't make me laugh!

As for yet another attack, this is just getting boring. How many times can she relaunch her leadership and Labour in Scotland's fightback? She must be getting a sore face from all the champagne bottles hitting her.

Wendy is so out of touch that she moans that she has "never been this poor in my life, goddammit!" at a time when the poorest in her constituency are seeing their tax rise under Labour in Westminster to pay for tax cuts for higher earners. Then to top it all off she claims she is a socialist. Unbelievable. You just couldn't make it up.

And now let me do the same with the one that followed:

We both, the Scottish and the English people must be very ungrateful indeed and a bunch of unthankfuls not to recognize and REJOICE with the wondrous achievements of those two uncommon mortals Blair and Brown. How can this be possible? How can we be denying the laborites their birth right to be recognised as the supreme caste and therefore the only ones in charge of everything?. We are really a very sorry lot if we don't fell in our collective knees and thank heavens for the Duo deliverance. We must be stupid, stupid, stupid. I despair of our salvation, because we are not going to be forgiven, no, the laborites have a very long memory and never forget a slight, especially ones as undeserved as the 3rd of past May the 1st of May caming. Fortunately there is nothing they can do to change their destiny, oblivion.

She'll oppose Alex Salmond morning, noon and night.

More bluster and less facts AGAIN.
Even if figures are true and SNP have cut back from election promises, the amount quoted of £656m is the same size as the amount forced on the government for the Edinburgh tram scheme, so maybe it is just prudent government ensuring they balance the books.
Labour in Scotland a year on still do not seem to have grasped the reality and continue with negative story after negative story, have they nothing left to offer Scotland but more scare stories?

Wendy has lost the plot...again!

If she is the best Labour can muster then Labour are doomed.

This latest incoherent blurb makes the hungry caterpillar speech look like a high point!

Unbelievable!

Two points, the SNP can't underfund as the Scottish Budget is a block grant from her pals in London and Labour, tories and Liberals all got together and forced through the 500 million pounds spending on the Edinburgh trams forcing the SNP to make savings elsewhere.

The public aren't stupid Wendy and can see your tatty game all day and night long!

Don't call us and we won't call you

On the BBC Newsnight - Paul Murphy says ( more or less ) that we'll get the Barnett consequential for prisons but forget the 400 mil. for council tax. Further, he suggests Westminster will review SNP plans for correction.

The guns are loaded and primed - let battle commence.

After a long spell in hiding and planning Wendy comes out with something she hopes will strike a blow to the SNP and boost her own ratings.

Wendy House plan: I'll huff and I'll puff and I call the SNP 'one big let-down’.

Great plan Wendy all while the SNP is very popular with the public and everyone says that it is you who are 'one big let-down'.

Best go into hibernation Wendy, you are at your strongest when neither seen nor heard.

Aye - Murphy says Wesminster is sovereign and he's more interested in the day to day provision of services than constitutional issues. Dictat is in the offing, and it's all according to the law and involves the whole of the UK. It's not a party political issue, as devolution doesn't pass the UK by - it involves all of the UK.

Whaur's mah tackity bits?

One big let down, says wendy, she's back with more of the soundbite socialism, nothing to add to any debate just more same old same old.

By the end of her and maggie's term in office I predict the result of slab members on their leaders will be two big let downs

The dulcet tones of a cello(out of tune), the fashion sense of Kate Moss (on speed), the looks of Marc Bolan (after the tree), and the intellect of Einstein (after death).
Welcome back wee Wendy - we have missed you!
Sorry - and the conscience of Mandelson and Archer.

Wendy has a credibility gap,
Failure to distinguish fantasy from reality and an over inflated self-opinion.
She thinks if she wants something badly enough this will happen, oh yes indeed, Godammit.
Trouble is, the electorate can see through this facade, and will deliver their verdict on Labour.

As happened to the Tories in Scotland, so will happen to Labour.
A chilling prospect for the faux 'socialists'.

I thought that students from poor backgrounds were given grants because they were reluctant to take loans.
"Ms Alexander went further than before, saying students from poor backgrounds in England have £1800 more in combined grants and loans than the £4400 they could get in Scotland - although Scottish students do not face £3000 in tuition fees."

If Wendy is so disappointed maybe she should ask Westminster for more of Scotland's money?

What? Don't be stupid we've got to waste money on vanity projects like Trident and big shiny aircraft carriers so Britain can project "global reach" to protect it's ... "interests"?

Well if the rest of the U.K. want to do this, fine but Scotland shouldn't suffer underfunding of it's own revenue to do it!

Scientist define consciousness/self-a
wareness in animals by testing whether they are able to recognize their own reflection in a mirror.

It is obvious the Wendy does not!

All the better for the cause of independence- would you want to live in a country run by third rate people or people who are just getting on with job with having to look over their shoulders all of the time to see where the wind is blowing from?
