Lochhead announces new fish conservation programme
GRAEME SMITHApril 05 2008

A new £500,000 two-year observer programme to deliver independent verification of ground-breaking fish conservation measures has been announced.

The programme will help minimise discards of cod and other fish stocks.

Making the announcement at the Fishing 2008 conference in Glasgow, Richard Lochhead, Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs and the Environment, said the Scottish fishing industry and the fishing communities it sustains are sailing into calmer waters after years of stormy weather. He said the fresh start for fishermen promised by the Scottish Government was starting to bear fruit. "I am proud that Scotland's fishing industry is leading the way in Europe on fish stock conservation," he said. "We are continually pursuing and promoting sustainable fishing.

"That is why I am pleased to announce a new two-year independent observer programme following a successful pilot.

"The new scheme will allow skippers to test new ways of fishing sustainably and get verification that they are helping conserve cod stocks.

"There is a new mood of optimism in Scotland about the future of the fishing industry." Last year's pilot saw 100 days at sea with independent observers and from July this year there will be 500 days at sea.

Another example of the SNP doing more in 10 months that the hapless ilLiberals + Labour managed in 10 years of deference to Westminster.

Time for full 200 mile marine legislative powers to be transferred to Scotland..... or would that allow u too much power Gordon?

make sme realise that the icelanders werenot that wrong when they stood up for themselve sin the cod wars and told everyone else to leave. but going into the eec meant lots of boats coming in from 20 countries. i am currently involved with "negotiating terms" for spanish boats to come to the pacific islands as there is no fish in spain or nearby, and presumably without controls being implemented they would otherwise hit one of the few areas that still have fish with their direct approach to conservation, i.e none.
any scottish boats wanting to come down and play the game fair then call me......

This is the best news I've heard since in the early 1970s, when we stopped being able to catch white fish in our sea lochs because they were all being hoovered up. The acid test of whether the right policy is in place, as far as I'm concerned, will be whether it again becomes possible to drop anchor in a sea loch an hour either side of the high or low tide and pull in a bucked of haddies etc. That's how it used to be and that's how it could be again. That's not nostalgia; it's a key community-based ecological indicator.
