Government minister Shona Robison and her MP husband Stewart Hosie yesterday began training to take part in a challenge to climb 219 mountains in one month.

The Dundee duo will climb the 2940ft Ben Tirran, near Glen Clova, Angus, as part of Macmillan Cancer Support's Conquer a Corbett challenge.

The charity hopes to raise more than £40,000 by encouraging Scots to climb all of the Corbetts - Scottish mountains between 2500ft and 3000ft in height - this May.

The husband-and-wife political team have pledged to help the charity meet its target, and began their training at the Law Hill in Dundee.

Ms Robison, public health minister and MSP for Dundee East, said: "Macmillan's many services, from medical professionals to benefits advisers, are much-needed - but they are costly to provide. That is why I am delighted to help raise money for Macmillan through Conquer a Corbett. And, of course, as public health minister I fully support any initiative to get Scots exercising."

Mr Hosie, SNP MP for Dundee East, added: "Macmillan has a long history of providing fantastic cancer services, and there are few Scots who haven't been affected by the illness in some way."

Conquer a Corbett runs in May. Along with some challenging mountains, there are easier hills suitable for people who have never climbed before.
