Tories demand Salmond quit as MP
KEVIN SCHOFIELDJanuary 04 2008
MISSED NUMBER OF VOTES: Alex Salmond
MISSED NUMBER OF VOTES: Alex Salmond

UPDATED: Read Robbie Dinwoodie's latest blog entry here

Alex Salmond has taken part in just four out of a possible 149 Westminster votes since the Holyrood elections, it was revealed yesterday.

The figures were published by the Scottish Conservatives, whose deputy leader Murdo Fraser urged Mr Salmond to resign as MP for Banff and Buchan.

The First Minister, who was elected MSP for the neighbouring Gordon constituency in last May's election, has vowed to stay on as an MP until the next General Election, which may not take place until 2010.

Mr Fraser said yesterday that Mr Salmond's constituents in Banff and Buchan were being "treated with contempt".

He said: "We warned before the elections that if Alex Salmond became the MSP for Gordon then the constituency would be saddled with a part-time MSP, dividing his time between London and Edinburgh.

"The reality is it is his Westminster territory of Banff and Buchan which has suffered."

Mr Fraser added: "Alex Salmond should do the decent thing and resign as an MP.

He would still be left with two jobs to do - a constituency MSP and First Minister of Scotland."

Details of Mr Salmond's voting record were produced by The Public Whip, a website which tracks the performance of MPs.

It shows that since May 8, Mr Salmond has turned up at Westminster to vote on only two days.

On July 25, he took part in three votes on immigration, the machinery of government and home affairs. The other occasion was on November 19, when he voted in favour of the European Communities (Finance) Bill.

The figures also show he missed a number of votes during the Holyrood election campaign.

It is not the first time that Mr Salmond has been criticised over his decision to continue as both an MP and an MSP.

The Liberal Democrats accused him of breaking a pre-election promise to accept only one salary.

However, the First Minister later announced he would be donating the one-third of his Holyrood salary to which he is entitled as a so-called "dual mandate" politician to a special trust fund to help community projects in the north-east of Scotland.

It means that when his First Minister's salary of £76,907 a year is added to his £60,277 Westminster wage, Mr Salmond's total annual income is £137,184.

A spokesman for Mr Salmond yesterday accused the Tories of "scraping the bottom of the barrel" and ignoring the Scottish national interest.

"There is a clear advantage to Scotland in having a First Minister who can make key interventions at Westminster on Scotland's behalf," the spokesman said.

"For example, on the UK Government's legislative programme or, for that matter, his exchanges with the Prime Minister on co-operating against terrorism."

He added: "There is much more to being an MP than trooping the lobbies at Westminster, as is shown in the latest available league table for MPs' participation.

"Encompassing speeches in the chamber, tabling of motions and submitting written and oral questions, the analysis shows all six SNP MPs, including Mr Salmond, are in the top 10 of Scottish MPs."

Oppostion politicians are in dire straights if that is all they can muster as criticism.

Vindictive, mind you.

I wonder which Tory MP's will sacrifice their lucrative directorships as an example to double-dipping MSPs?

Posted by: doonhamer on 12:12am Fri 4 Jan 08
It seems that only people who are annoyed at Alex Salmond being an MsP and an MP are his opponents. As he regularly shows them to be empty of any abilities to help Scotland, I am not surprised.

Murdo Fraser accuses Salmond of not representing his constituents. As a Tory and a unionist, he and his party are the voice of Westminster and not Scotland. When is Murdo going to resign?

BTW Murdo, have you returned the property you stole from Aberdeen University? How can you continue as MSP when you are a confessed thief?

Hi doonhamer

BTW Murdo, have you returned the property you stole from Aberdeen University? How can you continue as MSP when you are a confessed thief?

What's this about?

Probably the reason Salmond has voted so little in Westminster (and the same would apply to all the SNP MPs) is that the SNP only vote on matters pertaining to Scotland.

Trooping into the lobbies to vote on all and every matter, especially those pertaining only to England, is the speciality of the Scottish (?)Labour MPs.

Murdo really would win more votes if he called for Wendy to quit instead.

Why is the Herald not reporting on Wendy by the way ?
Posted by: Bob, Helensburgh on 12:26am Fri 4 Jan 08
The basic fact is that the people of Banff and Buchan have very little representation at Westminster (Mr Salmond obviously can't find time to take part in parliamentary committees if he can scarcely bother to attend debates or vote). Regardless of what good works he may do with his Westminster salary he is being paid for a job he isn't doing which shows contempt for his electorate and is taking money on false pretences. If he resigns the electors of B&B may be daft enough to elect another SNP MP, but at least they would have a full time one.
For all his fine words Alex Salmond's actions show a lack of principle.

I have voted for Salmond since 1997. If anyone had told me that I would be voting SNP before that I would have told them it was my last choice! Until the Tories understand how highly he is regarded in these parts and do likewise they will continue to get humiliated in election after election.

He is simply the best constituency MP in Scotland as close relatives who have reason to thank him will testify. He also is one of the few poltical representatives who sounds like a real human being.

The campaign I would like to launch is to persuade him to stay on as a Westminster M P!

Well Said Former Tory..... Bob has no idea just how well the SNP are serving the North East - Never have I heard Lib Dem or Labour speaking up for anything in our area, to this day I can't understand why Shetland & orkney for that matter vote Lib Dem......

Wait a minute.

Salmond said he would continue until the next election and was elected convincingly on that basis. So what is the moaning about except that the Tories can't stand getting a hammering every time they stand against him!

Go on Eck, do the decent and honourable thing and resign now. You are getting away with murder and are not representing the constituents of Banff & Buchan, as a full time MP. This whole issue has absolutely nothing to do with Scotland's national interest, more to do with Eck's greed and cavalier attitude, thumbing his nose at anyone who disagrees with him and in the process being sleekit in the extreme. Anyway with Eck's obsession with the nags and a punt, can you imagine him giving up the big allowances he gets from the public purse as a Westminster MP?
Posted by: Clare, Lanarkshire on 12:42am Fri 4 Jan 08
Look on the bright side. Wendy is sidelined. The Lib-Dems are saddled with the eejit Nicol. If this is the best the Tories can come up with clearly the SNP are doing an awful lot right!

Ooo! - tell us the saucy details.

Where has he hidden the body? What weapon did he use? What was his motive: greed, mental instability, a crime of passion? How can it be the perfect murder if you know about it? And now you are telling everyone surely he is on the run? Where will he hide?

Join us same place, same time, for the next gripping episode.

So, Murdo Fraser (Unionist) stole from Aberdeen University.
Wendy Alexander (Unionist) confessed to illegaly obtaining money.
Charlie Gordon (Unioinst) confessed to twice illegaly obtaining money.
George Foulkes (Unionist) convicted of drunkeness and police assault.
Mike Watson (Unionist) convicted arsonist - and lucky to escape an attempted murder charge.
Does anyone see a pattern here? And why no representation from the Lib/Dems - does anyone know different?

As for the article, what about Donald Dewar - remember him?

Watch the gnats squirm over this one.

No doubt the usual suspects like LA and doonhammer will be up through the night posting dribble - who do you think cares ladies?

I can almost almost smell the red hot keyboards from the basement in Bute House.

Alex Salmond will go down in history as the man who tried (and failed) to split the nation, a historical irrelevance.

2008 will see the SNP reduced to a pathetic, squabbling and infighting rabble.

What goes up, comes down.

We will enjoy it.

Why is Mr Fraser not castigating the Electoral Commission for the delays in getting Strathclyde's finest to raid Wendy's place and wheeching her off to jail for her criminal activities.

Eck has no interest in the mainly England only bills going through parliament in Westminster so he does not vote on them. Surely that fits with what Rifkind and the Tories have been whinging on about for the last three months.

Fraser should be pleased that Wee Eck is playing the game just as Dave and his Westminster Etonians want it to be played. So surely Eck is being an honourable chap on this one!

Alex Salmond was asked by the people of Banff and Buchan to stay on as their MP until the next general election even if he won the MSP post for Gordon. He asked the people and he promised he would do what they asked. What's wrong with that? Have yet to hear anyone in his constituency of Banff and Buchan complain about being neglected. Non story and just sour grapes from oor Murdo. Come on Murdo you can do a lot better than this, you're supposed to be presenting your own constituency and I can truthfully say you've not been seen around for quite a while. There Wendy will be waiting, and under the romantic shadow of the Eiffel Tower, they will be reunited once more!

Murdo McLoed of the clan Glenfinnan, born on the shores of Lake Menteith has every right to complain about someone doing their job. It's an affrontery to a Tory for anyone to act in the interests of Scotland.

Mr Salmond's constituents were also fully aware of his plans and were reported to be happy with them and intended to go with those plans until the next general election.

Makes you wonder what the Tories are up to really. All very sad. Yesterday they were complaining about Scottish Water and calling for changes which would undoubtedly lead to privatisation, today its this. Both subjects unlikely to create much of a problem for the SNP. Clearly they're all sitting around waiting to see what is going to happen to Wendy. <sighs>

When Scotland becomes independent will we have a bicameral parliamentary system? Will we have a House of Lords or an elected Senate? Or will we be a republic? Will we have a Prime Minister or a President?

I favour a republic with Alex as President and Nicola Sturgeon as Prime Minister. There'd still be room on the fitba squad for Murdo. I think that's preferable to a monarchy with Nicol Stephen as Queen and Jackie Baillie as the fool.

Hi Graham,

I don't get your gripe with Soutar. Is it because he donated to the SNP funds or is it because of his religious beliefs?

Do you think his cash made any difference to the outcome of the election or do you think the people who took the trouble to vote couldn't stomach any more of Labour.

Or do you think that the unionist parties are the only parties who have a God-given right to to mega election funds and the rest have no right to a level playing field? Didn't Tom Hunter give the SNP £500,000 for that very reason? Do you have a gripe with him also?

Hello Graham. Why are you so nasty to people? Do you want to talk about it? We can help you. When did this start? (3rd May 2007 was it?) Graham, there is an answer. You just have to look at eight years of Labour at Holyrood, and decades of Labour in Scotland before that. People woke up pet, people got really upset about it. You don't understand cos maybe you were on another planet when it all happened, but these things take their toll Graham. You should talk about it, you should listen and learn. Turning back the tide is pretty impossible now Graham, it has started and the waves coming are going to carry you off. Best idea is to go with the flow and wake up pet. If that fails, just keep takin the tablets!

Clare Coories Up To Campbells
And hey, La, we got snow! Anyone want soup?
Soup? That's your recipe for everything!

How are we to run a country on soup? There's not enough money to create more police officers - oh, that's okay. Let's offer every victim of crime a can of soup. We need a better telephone system - oh, that's okay. Just tie a length of string between two empty soup cans. Our health service is collapsing - oh that's okay. Serve them more soup.

One day a banana republic, the next a soup kitchen. Sheesh.
