‘Margo has been persistent all of her adult life’
Margo MacDonald admitted she was "embarrassed" to be given the Lifetime Achievement Award and insisted she had no intention of departing the political scene any time soon.
The Independent MSP for Lothians, who is a former winner of the Maverick of the Year title, also spoke of how she had failed to fulfil her twin political ambitions of helping to create a fairer world and winning independence for Scotland.
Ms MacDonald's political career dates back to 1966, when she joined the SNP. In the 1970 General Election, she was defeated as the Nationalists' candidate in Paisley, but three years later famously won the Glasgow Govan by-election - the SNP's first breakthrough in a Scottish city.
Less than four months later she was defeated in the General Election, but recovered sufficiently to become SNP deputy leader in 1977.
The first of several run-ins with the party hierarchy saw her quit the SNP in 1982 over the decision to suspend seven members of its left-wing 79 group' faction, but returned to the fold in time to be elected to the Scottish Parliament in 1999.
After being placed fifth on the party's Lothians list for the 2003 elections - leaving her no chance of being elected on an SNP ticket - she decided to stand as an Independent and was comfortably returned to Holyrood.
Her campaigning on issues such as prostitution law, the liberalisation of drugs policy and the need for more specialist PE teachers in primary schools has kept Ms MacDonald in the public eye and she was again re-elected in May.
Speaking of her award, she said: "I'm embarrassed because I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up."
Becoming an Independent, she said, had given her "a new lease of life" and there is still much she wants to achieve.
"I came into politics to achieve two indivisible imperatives - make the world a fairer place and deliver independence," she said.
"I can't say I've achieved that. There's still things that I really want to do."
A tribute to Ms MacDonald came from an unlikely source yesterday when First Minister Alex Salmond - with whom Ms MacDonald has had her political differences - told MSPs: "Margo is not just
persistent today, she's been persistent all of her adult life."

Having met her a few times I quite like Margo but would point out four things
1. she is married to a grossly unpleasant man and that has to cast doubt over her
2. she supported and was supported by the SNP but turned her back on the party after members democratically decided to let others have a turn - Margo takes the view that Margo is the most important issue on the planet
3. Salmond's comment is neither condemnation nor praise - he was trying to be nice but he knows too much
4. in her own terms she is a failure.
But she is quite funny and very intelligent.

Nationbuilding,
Talk about damning with faint praise!!
I have never met Margo so I think who she is married to is her own business. What I do remember was the vile disgusting and very personal witch hunt that went on against her when she dared to speak up against the party line. Fine she could be criticised for doing that but the poison that was spat in her direction was the thing that turned me off the SNP for ever. That was personal and nasty. You have just dipped into this well with your comment.
As for her being only concerned about herself? What a load of manure! She remains in the political wilderness because she is one of those very rare breed of politician. One with integrity, who will not allow the politics to swamp the importance of the issues, which is our lives. I do not see one more of her kind in that rats den in Edinburgh that purports to be a parliament. That includes ALL sides.
The SNP revealed a side that I did not know was there in the way they treated this woman. Every cloud.... I suppose. I now know what they are like.
I do not think Margo would agree with your criteria as to whether she is a failure. There are a lot of very vulnerable women in Edinburgh and throughout Scotland that are ever indebted to her in the way she put politics aside and supported them while the sleazebags took cheap shots from the sidelines. She is a huge success to those women.
In my view she is a huge success because she, more than any other politician in Scotland, has retained some dignity while her ex colleagues scurry over the sh*t heap of power like the rats they are.
Congratulations Margo!! You deserve it.

Frewgosh - Margo thought the party was a great thing until the members had the cheek to decide to give someone else a go at representing them and she flounced off. I am not, never have been and never will be a member of the SNP but it seems to me that one's perspective should be a little wider than personal interest.
I don't understand your reference to vulnerable women. Are you referring to Margo's attempt to introduce prostitution tollerance zones? I certainly support Margo's attempts but they failed and I can't see how that helped anyone.
You say Margo would not agree she has failed - read the article - she says she had "two indivisible imperatives - make the world a fairer place and deliver independence," she said. I can't say I've achieved that." - sounds like Margo disagrees with you but perhaps you know better than her!
Your message is correct in every detail with the exception of absolutely everything - are you a LibDem member?
Having said all that - I do rather like her and think she is amongst the best we have. Some of the attacks on her were pretty low. She should, I think, have been more open about her health. Oh well.
